About

Les Misérables on Tour

Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.

Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.

About Les Misérables

The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.

Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."

    Les Mis was great

    by J. S. on 1/9/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

My goosebumps had goosebumps! It was so well done. The songs were sung perfectly. Sets were masterfully changed, and the actors and orchestra were so good. My favorite scene was the one with the candles and ghosts of fallen heroes. Very moving.

    Excellent

    by J. T. on 1/8/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

Transformational scenes were expertly evolved with very little impact to the show. Intermission wasn’t enough time for ladies restroom visits as the warning music came and still long lines waiting.

Love Les Mis - but not in love with this one.....

by BethP on 1/7/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I love the Tennessee theatre. It is such a great place. I have seen several plays here before - including musicals. All have been really good. I also have seen Les Mis multiple times. It is one of my favorite musicals. This time, I couldn't understand the singers (multiple people.) Either the sound was off or the singing was not clear. I still enjoyed the show and I am glad that I got to see this play again. It was staged differently than I have seen it before. That was okay and worked for me. However, the lyrics to many songs were lost.

One of my favorite shows ever !

by Phantom of the Barricade on 1/7/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

This show was totally awesome! The actor who played Jean Valjean was totally perfect for the role because he brought out the emotion in the character perfectly . The other actors and actresses were also cast perfectly for their parts and the show was staged perfectly even the barricade scenes. My only complaint is with the staging of a couple of the songs but other than that it was a perfect night and something I would recommend for anyone who asked me about it.

    Disappointed

by Ted on 1/7/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

The music itself could never be bad, it's a great play but I thought the music was rushed. It was a faster tempo, decreased time between songs and scenes. All in all it seemed they were rushing through it with no time to savor it. Sets were amazing and flawlessly changed. Lighting was very dark, could have used some increased wattage on some of the spot lights and overall lighting. I've seen this play 5 other times and this was my least favorite production.

    A truly miserable experience

    by J. F. on 1/7/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I have seen Les Miserables on stage twice - decades apart. I hoped my experience would be different this time but it wasn’t. I did not like it. For me, it was grim and tedious. I was truly miserable for over 2 hours.
