Amazing!
by Educ8r314 on 7/27/19Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5I am a Les Miz veteran, having seen this show performed several times from big Broadway staging to theater in the round. I also saw the more recent movie version, which left much to be desired. Given that.... First, Cadillac Palace is a small theater with a small stage. You will not see the big turntable that allows for the barricade to spin and cast to move about while maintaining a traditional "face to audience" stance. Instead, you get a wonderfully creative and effective set, using some intricate movable set pieces and a large scrim/projection combination to create the world. The transition into the sewer scenes and the way the scrim is used for those scenes was amazing! Second, there are really not going to be awful seats because the theater is small. We sat in the far right side of the dress circle, right on an aisle and in the front. Our view was spectacular! As long as you don't have an obstructed view, there are plenty of places to sit and not be so far back from the action. Third, keep in mind that a smaller venue also means a smaller pit orchestra, so there was not a traditional grand piano but instead a keyboard. The talent of the musicians in that pit brought the music to life anyway! Fourth, Les Miz is a LONG musical by itself, so this production removed a few extra verses or lines from various songs. It didn't detract from the show in any way, just noticeable to someone who has the entire symphonic recording committed to memory. Our matinee started at 2PM and ended right at 5PM even with intermission. Lastly, the cast itself that we saw (Wednesday matinee cast) was phenomenal! Clearly, people were cast for their talent and so this was a more diverse cast than I have seen in larger scale shows. The actor playing Valjean brought such power and emotion to his character, Javert was intense in the way he needed to be, Eponine brought down the house (and the tears) with "On My Own" and "Little Fall of Rain". The kids were adorable, making Gavroche's final stand pretty tear inducing. I had a Les Miz newbie with me for the show, and neither of us could find any cast member that was lacking.
This was truly a well staged, excellently performed show!
