A Fun Night With "Friends"...and Leonid
by Steve L on 6/2/25Blue Ocean Music Hall - SalisburyRating: 5 out of 5Saw Leonid & Friends at the Blue Ocean Music Hall in Salisbury MA on Thursday May 29th and had a blast. For those unfamiliar with the band, they got their start when founder and bassist Leonid Vorobyev, a famed music producer in Russia, decided to record a cover song by the band "Chicago"as an anniversary gift for his wife, enlisting his studio friends. The video went viral and people asked for more and more, growing them into an internet sensation and earning them fans the world over, including even the band Chicago, who shared their videos on their website. Calls for a tour soon followed and they were on their way.
The amazing musicians that make the band are top-notch professionals and that shows in the performance. If you're going to play Covers of Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, and Tower Of Power you're going to need a strong brass section and they have that in spades. Sax/flute player Oleg Kudryavtsev is the comic foil of the band and his playfulness is topped by his musical talent. Trumpet player Valery Markov and trombonist Maxim Likhachev round out the horn section and together they form a powerful blast of musical energy, hitting every punch of these songs.
Sergey Kurmaev plays keyboards, Igor Javad-Zade ("the engine") plays drums, while Leonid thumps the bass to form the rhythm section that is solid as a rock. The secret weapon of the group is their incendiary lead guitarist Konstantin Kovachev. Whether the song calls for some tasteful acoustic fills or a ripping electir solo, he delivers with ferocity.
The lead singers were super talented as well. The meaty rock vocals of Vasily Akimov, the crystal falsetto of Danil Buranov, the high tenor of Mikhail Puntov, and the powerful voice of the beautiful Ksenia Buzina brought the songs to life. Such a strong team of vocalists make it hard to not be engaged, as they almost seem to challenge each other to outdo each other and raise each song to a higher level,
Speaking of the songs, the show was a magnificent mix of Chicago covers and other fun songs. From the opener "Make Me Smile", the band did just that for the audience. Throwing in such numbers as Steely Dan's "My Old School"(where Konstantin melted his fretboard), Tower Of Power's "What Is Hip?"and the surprise "I Say A Little Prayer"where Ksenia realy shined. A great setlist performed by great musicians... what more could a music lover ask for. I highly recommend seeing this band if they ever return to your area. You will not be disappointed!!
