Late Night Catechism Tour Dates

It isn't often that an off-broadway theatre production makes it big, but that's exactly what happened with Late Night Catechism. This one-nun show is a combination stand-up comedy act and play, with the audience willing members of the cast. The show started with regular appearances at the Live Bait Theater in Chicago in 1993, where captivated audiences filled the seats every Friday and Saturday night. A move to the Royal George Theater didn't slow down the popularity of the show. Since its modest opening at a storefront theater, it has gone on to tour through virtually every major U.S. city and made successful appearances in countries such as Australia, England, Ireland and Canada. Late Night Catechism is the longest continuously running show in Chicago. Maripat Donovan, the star, earned an Outer Critics Award Nomination for outstanding solo performance. Both Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan have been nominated by the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle for their outstanding work on this production at different times. About the Show A truly one-woman show, Late Night Catechism addresses Catholic education with a wink, a nod, and a deep sensitivity. Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan both have a long history of Catholic education and a deep humor about the subject that never crosses into mockery. Sister, the teacher of this late night catechism class stands on the stage as the person replacing the regular Father Murphy who teaches the class but doesn't want to miss his poker night. During this combination improve theater production and stand-up comedy routine, audiences enjoy classic jokes about Saintly layoffs and other facets of the Church that those in the know can get behind. Audience members are the class, and shouldn't be surprised to find themselves relegated to the corner on stage for bad behavior. Questions and answers are part of the show, along with a simple set. Late Night Catechism became more than just a night of light entertainment. As part of the show, Quade and Donovan took the opportunity to shed light on the plight of retired nuns, and audiences have donated more than $3 million in support.

    Late Night - Entertaining

by BKOBR on 3/24/14Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton Rouge

The show was funny, but either the performer didn't speak loud enough throughout the performance or the venue was the issue, because quite often you could not hear what was being said which was a shame because I feel it would have been hilarious if I could have heard it all.

    Very funny adaptation

by DebraA on 3/24/14Baton Rouge River Center Theater - Baton Rouge

It was a very entertaining take on Catholic School life back in the day. Got an upgrade on our seats when we got there so we ended up in the orchestra section about mid way back.

    Fun time at catechism

by fenwayb on 6/17/13Vogel Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

What a fun improv play. If you ever grew up around nuns or Catholic schools, you'll laugh at the memories the nun/actress brings back. Don't come late and remember your confirmation name.

Very Funny-Entire Family Enjoyed the Show.

by MichiganCityIndiana on 4/28/13Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

I took the family to the show as part of my wife's birthday present. We laughed the entire time. The interesting part was that two generations of my family could relate to the show, all having gone through the Catechism program but at different times of our various lives. Also, the venue (Fort Wayne Embassy Theatre) is one of the more beautiful theaters I have ever seen. History buffs will enjoy seeing the perfectly restored Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne.

    Lots of laughs

by JumpinJay on 4/24/13Smith Theatre - Buffalo

It was like being in the classroom with a real nun..only this one was funny. Lots of audience participation, laughs and even some learning about the Catholic church. Interesting prizes like a small Jesus flashlight, glow in the dark rosaries and a crucifix that opens into a small penknife!!!

    Very funny!

    by Teraze11 on 4/24/13Smith Theatre - Buffalo

This is the second play in this series that I have attended. I thought the first one was a little bit better, but this one was still worth the money. Very entertaining!

Late NIght Catechism-laughed the entire 2 hours!

    by Frances1212 on 4/22/13Smith Theatre - Buffalo

This was so much fun - she was great in the role and adlibed so many great lines while interacting with the audience. If you were raised Catholic you get it all 100%--my husband was not and still roared with laughter the entire evening. A great time for a very reasonable price.

    Timetravel for lapsed Catholics

by salonstar on 4/22/13Smith Theatre - Buffalo

A trip down memory lane for all who attended religious instruction. This "Sister Act" is funny, engaging and leaves you with that forever young feeling. This is well written and Sister is a great character. Even Methodists loved it!

Was not sure what to expect, but a very entertaining evening. Full of surprises with the interaction of the audience. Enjoyed it very much. Would go see it again. The 100% of free will donation also going to retired Sisters was very impressive. Hopes this plays for a very long time.

Late Night Catechism in Las Vegas

    by Daisy65 on 4/22/13Smith's Theatre - Buffalo

This was very entertaining and took me back to my grammar school days in the '50's. The woman we saw perform was Nonnie and she was terrific, she even told us the pictures that were around the stage as props were colored by her grandchildren. Even my husband who did not go to Catholic school enjoyed the show. The interaction with the audience was great.

    Late Night Catechism Las Vegas

by Ecygnet on 4/16/13710 Main Street - Buffalo

A fun-filled treatment of the grammar school and catechism classes of my youth. "Sister" was funny without being irreverent! She kept the show moving at a good pace, involving members of the audience in the performance. I hope to see her again in other productions. We had a great time, even though the venue was changed due to a fire in the Smith Theater during the previous week. Management was very helpful in finding acceptable seating arrangements.
