About

A Chicago original and international hit, LATE NITE CATECHISM started in a Chicago storefront theater in 1993, and is still going strong.
Call it Carol Burnett meets Whoopi Goldberg. This interactive comedy is part catechism class, part stand-up routine. Since its beginning, LATE NITE CATECHISM has been performed in almost every major U.S. city, plus has done successful stints in Australia, England, Ireland, Canada, and Malaysia.
The New York Times calls it, "hilarious, well-written and inspired." Jeffrey Lyons from TV’s Sneak Previews calls LATE NITE CATECHISM "something to savor and enjoy....one of the most intimate, rewarding shows in town."
The role of Sister, the wise-cracking, lovable character of LATE NITE CATECHISM, was created in 1993 by Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan, both products of the Catholic school system.
Among the many reviews it has received, the New York Times called LATE NITE CATECHISM “hilarious, well-written, and inspired,” the Chicago Reader called it “gloriously funny,” and the Catholic Explorer called it “a habit-forming hoot!”
Schools and parishes throughout the United States have used all of these shows as a way of raising much-needed money to balance their budgets. In addition, the shows are used to help raise retirement funds for Sisters. Since the collections started, LATE NITE CATECHISM has generated donations of well over $3 million, which has been sent to various orders of nuns throughout the United States.

I cannot recommend Latenight Cathechism enough! You will not regret going to see this fabulous show. I want to go back and see it again right now!! If you go, buy me a ticket. ;-)

    Flashback to my catholic education!

by Hythere on 5/23/18Susan and Phil Hammer Theater Center - San Jose

From the set that looked like any of my classrooms from 15 years of parochial education to the habit worn by the Sisters of St. Francis and the Dominican nuns it was all too real! This one woman show was funny, funny, funny because "Sister's" interaction with audience members reminded me of episodes I experienced from the perils of gum chewing, talking in class, not following classroom rules to inappropriate dress. Sister hit all of the highlights of being educated by nuns and some of the old Catholicism beliefs. I loved it and thought the actress playing "Sister" was excellent, and played the role to a T that I wasn't sure if she was a real nun or not. Loved it - Loved it! I also must say how much I love the Hammer Theater. It is conveniently located to parking, restaurants and public transportation. MOST important to me is how comfortable the seats are. I have stopped going to SF, because the theaters there have seats that are miserably uncomfortable, the seats are ridiculously close to the seat in front and behind. I am considered petite, but even for my short legs, my knees are touching the seat backs of the row in front of my seat. I have back issues and find the seats in SF so horrible, I can not sit through a whole show. The Hammer Theater is a wonderful venue to enjoy excellent entertainment. Thanks so much for providing outstanding events to San Jose audiences!

I've seen Late Nite Catechism several times and it never fails to make me laugh and provide me with additional information about the Catholic Church. You don't have to be Catholic to enjoy it! The humor is universal.

    Late Nite Catechism

by Anonymous on 5/23/18Susan and Phil Hammer Theater Center - San Jose

I have attended this play 2 previous times and I always find it very funny. The actress, Kim Richards, was new for me, but she was great. It truly took me back to my Catholic school days. I would enjoy attending other performances in their series and bringing friends. Please continue to bring back the Late Nite Catechism series. I appreciated the acceptance of donations after the performance for the nuns that she represents.

The Late Night series continues to be one of the funniest play produced. The Actress ability to interact with the audience is great. I would recommend this play, or any of the series for that matter, to anyone. I know I will go again when it comes back.

HILARIOUS! Not only was the show great, but the audience participation was amazing! It almost felt like we were back in Catholic School with like-minded classmates, whispering to ourselves why do we do this.

Myself a womb to tomb Catholic and my husband a convert laughed and smiled thru the whole show. Interactive audience participation in a smaller venue. Don't have to be Catholic to enjoy this comedy show.

    MEMORIES AND LAUGHS

by PHYLLUCKY on 12/15/17Count Basie Theatre - Red Bank

THE SHOW WAS SO FUNNY THAT MY FACE WAS SORE FROM LAUGHING FOR ALMOST 2 HOURS STRAIGHT. THE NUN CAPTURED AND HAD FULL CONTROL OF THE AUDIENCE - I MEANT THE CLASS ROOM. SHE KNEW SO MUCH ABOUT CATHOLIC SCHOOL AND THE RELIGION AND BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES I FORGOT I HAD. THIS IS MY THIRD TIME TO SEE THE SHOW AND IT'S DIFFERENT EACH TIME. VERY CLEVER AND TALENTED.

A CCD Class like no other

by JJMATeddy on 12/15/17Count Basie Theatre - Red Bank

This was by far the funniest show we have seen in years. The fun started even before the show started with a trip to the ladies room. It made the waiting so pleasurable. The "matron" kept in the theme of the evening and had everyone laughing. The show was absolutely hilarious from the moment it started until the very end. Audience participation made the evening. You did need to know a bit about Catholic schools and/or CCD classes to understand all of the jokes. Highly, highly recommend this show as well as the regular Late Night Catechism

A friend recommended this play and we really enjoyed it. You don’t need to have gone to a Catholic school to enjoy it but if you did go to a Catholic school like I and did have the nuns teaching you, you can really relate to it! Very funny!

    Funtastic!!!

by Epis on 10/5/17Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

Sister had two Carol Burnett moments when she had to turn her back to compose herself...one was when the answer to Easter Duty was "when I get my Easter basket done by noon." But she never wavered with her witty comeback that was very funny but non-down putting to respondent. Deep theological truths in memorable easily recalled smiling context. A must for all members of the body of Christ to experience.
