A Chicago original and international hit, LATE NITE CATECHISM started in a Chicago storefront theater in 1993, and is still going strong.
Call it Carol Burnett meets Whoopi Goldberg. This interactive comedy is part catechism class, part stand-up routine. Since its beginning, LATE NITE CATECHISM has been performed in almost every major U.S. city, plus has done successful stints in Australia, England, Ireland, Canada, and Malaysia.
The New York Times calls it, "hilarious, well-written and inspired." Jeffrey Lyons from TV’s Sneak Previews calls LATE NITE CATECHISM "something to savor and enjoy....one of the most intimate, rewarding shows in town."
The role of Sister, the wise-cracking, lovable character of LATE NITE CATECHISM, was created in 1993 by Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan, both products of the Catholic school system.
Among the many reviews it has received, the New York Times called LATE NITE CATECHISM “hilarious, well-written, and inspired,” the Chicago Reader called it “gloriously funny,” and the Catholic Explorer called it “a habit-forming hoot!”
Schools and parishes throughout the United States have used all of these shows as a way of raising much-needed money to balance their budgets. In addition, the shows are used to help raise retirement funds for Sisters. Since the collections started, LATE NITE CATECHISM has generated donations of well over $3 million, which has been sent to various orders of nuns throughout the United States.
Thoroughly enjoyed the long running show. The “Sister” was well seasoned. Brought up old memories. Recommend!
Show was exceptional. Our sister for the evening was hilarious and kept the audience laughing.
Great regardless of your religion or lack thereof, but particularly funny if you’re catholic. In a respectful way. Based on this show we’ll be checking out the theaters other offerings.
Venue was quaint. It felt like I was back in catholic school. Sister was funny. Highly recommend! Even for ‘publics’ who had friends that went to Catholic school.
Amazing actress. Very funny. Audience participation is hilarious. Couldn’t believe how many names/facts “Sister” remembers from the audience. Impressive!!
This is a show that will have you belly laughing in no time. I was cry-laughing! Attended the 10/19/19 show and Sister was spot on. Her interactions with the audience is perfect. Go see this show, and bring a few extra bucks for the collection at the end (for the real Sisters of the world) You won't regret purchasing tickets to this show.
My sisters and I took our mother to this show for her 70th birthday. She had attended Catholic schools on the south side of Chicago her whole life, and found the entire show both nostalgic and hilarious. Afterward she said that everything “Sister” did - from making an audience member spit out her gum and wear it on her nose, to making everyone stand and answer her questions in complete sentences - was spot on. The great thing was that the show poked gentle fun at Catholic school traditions without being at all blasphemous or sacrilegious. A bit irreverent, but not blasphemous. For those less familiar with the Catholic Church and/or Catholic school / CCD, some of the humor will be lost - but if you have any familiarity, it’s a riot. Also: be prepared to participate! “Sister” will call on audience members - both those who raise their hands and those who are “misbehaving” in any way (chewing gum, talking, taking out their phones or cameras). It’s a small, intimate theater and if you don’t want to participate, this is not the show for you. It’s not easy to carry a two-hour one-woman show and hold everyone’s interest, but “Sister” delivered.
We saw the 5:00pm show on September 14th of Late Night Catechism at The Royal George Theater. The actress playing the Nun was unbelievably funny with her quick sense of humor, which I'm sure most was ad-libbed based on the crowd. I would say a good portion of the audience wasn't even Catholic but we had a blast and the time flew bye. The venue was intimate so everyone could get involved and "Sister" made sure of it. I would recommend Catholics and Non-Catholics take the time to enjoy this inter-active experience. There's definitely a reason why it has been so successful for so many years. We plan on going back soon.
So much fun. Went with a group of friends and each one of us enjoyed the entire show! Sister Mary interacted with the audience and made us laugh until our sides hurt. Highly recommend!
I enjoyed the performance fun and entertaining, made me think when I was a kid back in those CCD classes
We had a wonderful experience. Late Nite Catechism had us laughing the whole time. We were drawn in to the humor and experiences of earlier days, but always in a respectful way. Thank you for delivering a great performance. Clergyman
I took my my to celebrate her 70th birthday and she had the best time. She grew up in an all girl’s Catholic school and she said the classroom set up and how the Sister acted was spot on. I even laughed non stop. I’d highly recommend this show!!!
Would absolutely recommend to anyone!! Very funny
Sister was terrific. Great memories and good refresher course with comedy and audience participation. A very enjoyable beginning to a great night in Chicago
Really enjoyed the show last Saturday night! My wife and I had a great time!
Sun. we attended Late Nite Catechism & the show was wonderfully funny. We had a small audience ad there was only one nun in the whole show which was a little disappointing as the picture shows 5 nuns. As a person not raised Catholic it was equally enjoyable as it was for my neighbor who was raised Catholic. Now I can see how those nuns kept so many students in line. If you're looking for a fun show with a lot of laughs as well as some points to consider in your own life, I would highly recommend this show.
Didn't realize it was a one woman show. She was so talented! I don't know if it would be funny for non-Catholics, but as a Catholic, i found it hilarious and i actually did learn some catechism! We brought my 17 year old daughter and she loved it too and nothing cringeworthy, just good clean fun. Plenty of non-Catholics there who also seemed to really enjoy themselves. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
This show is hilarious! From when Sister walks in to when she leaves - it is so fun. Every show is different because of the audience. The audience is involved as much or as little as they want to be. Totally engaging and if you were in the Catholic School system - even funnier. I was not, but my mom was. She loved it and so did I. A great way to spend our afternoon - I highly recommend it!
I would highly recommend this especially for anyone who once attended catholic grade school.
It felt like someone sent me back in time to my grammar school years. Outstanding acting and so much fun!
