This was something different from the usual improv you find around Chicago, so in that sense it was good. I went in not expecting much, which helped. A little background on the Catholic church helps in liking the humor, but is not required. It was a show where I'd chuckle every 5 minutes or so, not one where I'd have my side hurting from it being so hilarious. It's in support of the Catholic church, so you won't find any deeply discriminating jokes, but it's kind of fun and refreshing to not have all nasty humor. Overall, decent for getting discount tickets - would recommend to someone that went to Catholic school for a little "blast from the past."

About
A Chicago original and international hit, LATE NITE CATECHISM started in a Chicago storefront theater in 1993, and is still going strong.
Call it Carol Burnett meets Whoopi Goldberg. This interactive comedy is part catechism class, part stand-up routine. Since its beginning, LATE NITE CATECHISM has been performed in almost every major U.S. city, plus has done successful stints in Australia, England, Ireland, Canada, and Malaysia.
The New York Times calls it, "hilarious, well-written and inspired." Jeffrey Lyons from TV’s Sneak Previews calls LATE NITE CATECHISM "something to savor and enjoy....one of the most intimate, rewarding shows in town."
The role of Sister, the wise-cracking, lovable character of LATE NITE CATECHISM, was created in 1993 by Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan, both products of the Catholic school system.
Among the many reviews it has received, the New York Times called LATE NITE CATECHISM “hilarious, well-written, and inspired,” the Chicago Reader called it “gloriously funny,” and the Catholic Explorer called it “a habit-forming hoot!”
Schools and parishes throughout the United States have used all of these shows as a way of raising much-needed money to balance their budgets. In addition, the shows are used to help raise retirement funds for Sisters. Since the collections started, LATE NITE CATECHISM has generated donations of well over $3 million, which has been sent to various orders of nuns throughout the United States.

by areyoukiddinme on 2/9/13Royal George Theatre - ChicagoThe small audience made the performance that much more intimate and lively. "Sister" was able to style her teaching to us individually in a most hilarious way. Bravo to the 2 non-Catholic pastors who added fodder to the evening.
Rating: 4 out of 5by Anonymous on 2/2/13Royal George Theatre - Chicago The show was very good and funny. There should an age limit for this show. There was a 6 year old and a 8 year old at the show and I think the material was not all heard because of this. It is worth seeing for a fun night out. Theatre is very small so get tickets early.
Rating: 4 out of 5by Anonymous on 1/7/13Royal George Theatre - Chicago The show exceeded our expectations. My husband and I took our two daughters, both mid-twenties, not knowing how they would react to the show. All except my husband had attended Catholic schools. The show was very funny and my daughters really enjoyed the humor and discipline. The audience interaction keeps everyone engaged and laughing. "Sister" knew how to keep things moving and keep the audience entertained. We definitely would go again!
Rating: 4 out of 5by Anonymous on 12/3/12Royal George Theatre - Chicago It was great! The nun did a fantastic job and we laughed the entire evening. She was the best!!! Although the seating had a lot to be desired! I realize we were in a classroom, but the seats would be better if they had some padding! I realize the show has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the theatre, but the bathrooms need to be cleaned
Rating: 4 out of 5 A fun time capsule of the Catholic classroom.
by Autumnal on 11/17/12Royal George Theatre - ChicagoThis was a great choice of theater for a relaxed, intimate evening of comedy. The concept is great - whether you attended Catholic grammar school or not - you are the classroom and the solo actress, is your teacher, or Sister, for the evening. Our actress was really great - indistinguishable from the real thing. She walked the right line between making us feel like we were all about to get in big trouble, and addressing our naughty, unCatholic behavior. It was a perfect time capsule, full of laughs and ironies, of Catholic school in its mid-century hey day. There were very few people there that evening, which made it more intimate and fun. Loved the set - fantastic stroll back in time. Loved our "Sister". The only criticism -- while I know this is a long-running show, some of the "current" references and comedic punch lines needed a little updating. They gave away the slightly dated origin of the writing. But we loved being a part of the show, and the overall civility and humanity of it. The hard edge and deep concept of modern theater, while thought provoking, isn't so relaxed and enjoyable. This is respectful and a lot of fun. I expected something harder edged and racy..and really enjoyed the "nice" quality compared to most of what is out there.

by TardyBoy on 8/28/12Royal George Theatre - ChicagoMy friend and I had a great time at this play. We were late and got chastised by the Sister for it. My friend was called out for heading to the washroom without raising her hand. Was totally fun. Would highly recommend.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Brings back many memories
by LVBandKVB on 8/27/12Royal George Theatre - ChicagoHaving grown up with 12 years of Catholic education and being taught by nuns over many of those years, many of the memories of those years are relived with a lot of humor. It's a one nun show, but with lots of interaction with the audience in a very intimate theater. Don't be late or sister will fine you and make you apologize to the rest of the "class."

by PaulaRed on 8/20/12Royal George Theatre - ChicagoThis show is especially hillarious for anyone who survived catholic school. Be prepared to participate in class, and be sure to show Sister some respect!
