  • A Must See

by DreamingTao on 3/4/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

If you like a cappella, this is something you have to see, at least once, in your life. Unique, energetic and fun.

Another absolutely excellent performance!!!! I highly recommend that any who has the chance to see them live take advantage of that opportunity!!!. A wonderful show filled with great music, humor, dance and cultural education.

  • Amazing

by Jenid on 3/3/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

I have loved them since Graceland and Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes. I was delighted to see that they would be in town and a great price. They are even better in person with beautiful harmonies and lively dance. It is obvious that they love what they do.

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo was unique and awesome!

by Sparkman1978 on 3/3/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

Very enjoyable performance. I have never experienced anything like it and I enjoyed every minute. The sounds and harmonies of the group were unforgettable. The dancing and playfull interaction made it fun to watch too. I would highly recommend this show to anyone.

  • Good rhythms but too long

by RDJS on 3/3/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 3 out of 5

Ladysmith does a great job of acapella singing and the harmonies are beautiful to listen to...BUT the songs are much to long. If each was about 3 - 4 minutes instead of about 8 - 10 it would have been more enjoyable. I'm guessing it's a cultural difference - we're used to pop songs that run 2 - 3 minutes on average and Ladysmith's songs just run on too long. It that's OK with you, then they are definitely worth seeing.

  • "Amateur hour"

by KingL on 3/3/10Progress Energy Center's Mahaffey Theater - St PetersburgRating: 1 out of 5

We left at halftime. The show would be great for a high school musical. No portable mikes so they couldn't move, sound goes off and on. No music of any kind. Selection in 1st half sounded like one long song. These people are Zulu, the fiercest, proudest warriors in Africa and they're singing "throw me a kiss" songs. Did they at least sing "Diamonds on the souls of her shoes"? Very disappointing.

  • Great for first 1/2 hour

by OleoM on 2/25/10Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 3 out of 5

Dynamite group with beautiful blend and interesting antics. Could use greater variety in their repertoire... seemed like the songs were pretty much the same. Printed words in English in the program would have been helpful.....so we would have known what they were saying over and over and over.....

  • Worth the drive

by transported on 2/25/10Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

I have admired this group since "discovering" them on Paul Simon's Graceland album in the 80s. Would have preferred to make the hour-long, snowy drive on a weekend, but definitely worth it, even midweek. The sound of LBM surrounds and flows around you as if you were a rock in midstream and their singing is the water ... so much more effective live than on a cd. It was great to see the dance moves that accompany much of the singing, something you miss on a cd. If you've ever seen the classic film Zulu, you understand immediately the aural tradition and roots of LBM. Would have been nice to know the content of the lyrics (translated). But an amazing sound and tradition. Way to keep it going, Joseph Shabalala!

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo was unbelievable!!!!

by Anonymous on 2/25/10Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the most amazing things I have witnessed. The singing was sublime, and on top of that the "tip-toes dancing" was beautiful, fluid, and breathtaking!. I haven't smiled and laughed, rejoiced and felt such warmth of heart for so many many years. This allows a beautiful, warm and profound sense of wonder for my 7 year old and myself who attended last night. God bless them so very much

  • Long wait over...

    by ollie0 on 2/25/10Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

I have been in love with the voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo since I was a teen and heard Paul Simon's Graceland album. When my daughter was little, we had purchased several of their CDs for her to listen to. When she was ill, it soothed her. She has grown up listening to them and has loved them all along. Finally, last night, we saw them in person from front row seats at the Akron Civic Theater! They were just as amazing in person as we had hoped they would be and the show is one I would definitely recommend. I look forward to many continued years of LBM and will definitely see them again!

  • Great Harmonies

by Hippoman on 2/25/10Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

The harmonies were wonderful, the dance interesting. Some of their songs lasted a bit long, but when it was over, I found myself wanting more. Very enjoyable.

  • Everyone should experience!

A night of peace, love and harmony not to be missed.

  • Ladysmith As Powerful As Ever

by Waldotoo on 2/5/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

We heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo at BB Kings and had a fabulous time. The group is as powerful as ever--incredible strong vocals and great dancing. A moving and heart-lifting experience. Recommended for all.

Best show I've ever seen, hands down. This group is amazingly talented in so many ways and they have an incredible message to spread through their music.

  • Ladysmith is great in concert

by JKEclectic on 8/3/09Belleayre Music Festival - HighmountRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have enjoyed Ladysmith Black Mambazo's music since the late 80's, well before Simon Garfunkle's "Graceland". Seeing this show was a birthday gift to my husband, and he loved it. This group has the most delicious sound. The harmonies and rhythms are different from European/American music and a special treat to the ear. The fact that few of the lyrics were in English focused my attention on the music and the words becames part of that experience. Their performance had a soft personal edge, with impromtu dancing and humor in addition to the rehearsed pieces. It was the kind of performance I would expect in a small intimate club. My only suggestion for improvement -- make the performance longer!

  • Boring

    by EPPY1 on 8/3/09Belleayre Music Festival - HighmountRating: 2 out of 5

First of all, who is Lady Smith? There wasn't one female in the group. Secondly & more importantly, this group lost about 90% of its appeal when Paul Simon left. While their harmonies are great, that's where it stops. Every song is acapella; no drums, no instruments at all & every song is the same, every kick is the same (and it still looks strangely out of place even though you expect it) & there are hardly any words to understand. I & my friend almost fell asleep a few times. Aside from a version of Amazing Grace which was somewhat moving, this was one of the first concerts I can remember that was a real snoozer!

  • Great music, just wanted more!

by EmJo on 7/21/09Oregon Zoo - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

After months of anticipation we were sadly disappointed when we found out that Ladysmith was opening the concert and not the headliners after all! All of the advertisements and even the tickets implied that the main act was simply the opener. In the end we had no interest in hearing the main act and were sad to see the Ladysmith set go by so quickly as audience members were only just arriving!!!

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo was boring

    by boliviano1825 on 7/20/09Oregon Zoo - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

Too repetitious. The group had excellent voices but not enough flair to excite you.

  • Ladysmith music touches my soul

by MonsterMommy on 7/20/09Oregon Zoo - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I'm repeatedly surprised by how the music from Ladysmith Black Mambazo seems to touch me in a deeper way than most music. My oldest daughter was born to their music so listening to them live was amazing. I love their energy on stage, the interaction and the fun they have. I especially like how it is a family and that the youngest son is moving into the singing role. This is music to be experienced vs seen.
