LA Galaxy History

The LA Galaxy have been playing for as long as Major League Soccer has existed in the U.S. They were one of the charter members of the league upon its creation in 1996, and in that first season, they held the best record in the Western Conference. They topped the Western Conference twice more before they clinched their first MLS Cup, beating the New England Revolution in 2002. History would repeat itself in 2005, when they emerged victorious over the Revolution to win the MLS Cup again.

From 2007 to 2012, an unexpected injection of star power took the Galaxy to a new place. British football legend David Beckham joined the Galaxy, and in short order there were more eyes on the team than ever before, and more MLS Cup victories in the 2011 and 2012.

Even after Beckham's departure, the Galaxy continued to shine. When they won the Cup over the Revolution again in 2014, they became the first team in the league to nab the championship five times. International stars continued to flock to LA afterward, including Britain's Steven Gerrard, Mexico's Giovani dos Santos andSweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Among the Galaxy’s alumni are three MLS MVP winners: Carlos Ruíz (2002), Landon Donovan (2009) and Robbie Keane (2014). In 2015, the award was renamed the Landon Donovan MVP Award to honor the decorated All-Star midfielder’s career. Donovan also earned the Golden Boot as the league’s leading scorer in 2008.

In 2023, the Galaxy helped set the MLS single match attendance record at 82,110 in an annual "El Tráfico" rivalry match against Los Angeles FC at the Rose Bowl on July 4.

    Good Seats, Good View

by SeanMcElroy on 7/15/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

This was a really great match. The seats were not expensive, and the view from where we were sitting was excellent. I highly recommend any seats in the Home Depot Center.

    4th of July

by Galactico007 on 7/15/09Home Depot Center - Los Angeles

Venue is excellent!!! Good prices! Family atmosphere.. Safety: superb. Easy parking. Cheap food at expensive prices. (The bad) Game needs to improve. I don't think the MLS needs foreign stars, but they need to develop their own ones. Honduras Carlos Costly was playing in the B league in Mexico. Nobody gave him an opportunity in Mexico--his chance came from Honduras. Now he plays for the Honduran national team (he scored against the USA). The Galaxy should find a way to get the prospects from foreign countries. They have a lot of desire and ability. Plus more latinos will go to the game. At the end it was a good evening. Only 3 stars. The quality of the game needs to improve.

    Had a great time!

by jnkw on 7/13/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

Watched double header - Sol & Galaxy! Got to see 'home team' Wizards play - was a bonus! Only bummer was that not all of the Galaxy players were available to play - exciting to watch both Donovan & Beckham play on the field!

    Poor Seat Assignment

by Gwilli on 7/13/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

This was my first professional soccer game and my first visit to the Home Depot Center. I have never been a fan of soccer but since my 11 year old son plays and has begun to show a serious interest; for his birthday i got tickets to the Galaxy game. During my on-line purchasing of the tickets, i attempted to get seating in a different section but was only offered seats in one particular section. ( i think it was 135 or something) We arrived 1 hour early. Parking was easy. The stadium layout is great! When we got to our seats there was a Galaxy flag on a pole there. (First clue) So i just moved it. As gametime approached, people were arriving in our section with megaphones, drums and the requisite two fisted beer! (Second clue) Finally, a gentleman arrived decked out in full Galaxian regalia and informed me that we were in section (135?) The puzzled look i responded with gave him a clue that this was our first time here. He informed me that we were in the Galaxy ( LA Riot) section, where it gets loud and rowdy with "PG rated language". Little did i know how loud and how PG it would get BEFORE gametime! I thought i would wait until after the game started before i moved if need be... I couldn't wait that long! The singing and chanting began with a rather cute and catchy phrase directed towards the Kansas City team; "You came a long way just to lose..." After that it went downhill FAST! There was a call and response between the fans and a super fan (i guess!) that was sort of maniacal. Once the game began, it got LOUD with the drums and horns and megaphones and chants. The language also got saltier. We couldn't even see the game because everyone was standing. So, 2 minutes into the game, i decided to move one section over. Even though we were not in the midst of the "RIOT" it was still something to witness. I know "football" fans are fanatical, and that's ok. I just think that seating in that section should be voluntary and requested, not assigned. I would probably go to another game but not in that section, especially with my family.

LA Galaxy (1) vs Columbus Crew (1)

by RickM on 7/13/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

I'm a Galaxy fan.. but what a heck... I came to see this game because Guillermo is playing on Columbus Crew and he was the best player on last season. He didn't shine in this game but was nice to see him playing. He is a player that knows how to handle the ball... not just kicking it as the best pay player on the league (you know to who I'm referring). Donovan as usual is a must in the team. He runs as anybody does. He is an asset to the team and he is better captain than the one we had last season. So overall an entertained game and Galaxy improving little by little thanks to Coach Bruce Arena.

    Los Angeles Galaxy 4th July

by Caddy3 on 7/12/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

It was great to be able to come to USA and watch a soccer game. The atmosphere was fantastic and we really enjoyed the way that everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Just a shame that David Beckham wasn't around to play, but we still enjoyed the game.

    4th of July

by Galax on 7/7/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

There were too many lights left on at the tennis court for the fireworks show. The fireworks were good, but the contrast wasn't. I understand that maybe a couple of lights could be left on for safety reasons, but there should be a darker viewing atmosphere for fireworks. On the field, the Galaxy won, but still look like a boring brand of soccer. The quality of the players is subpar for MLS. They play too defensively. They need more of an attacking style to be exciting to watch. I now understand why Beckham plays for other teams. The players around him need a major upgrade. Their style is not fun to watch. Also, why were there no pre-game festivities? There should have been something, considering it was the 4th of July. The USA was playing in a tournament on the same TV channel that showed the Galaxy game. There should have been a place to watch it before the Galaxy game started. Instead, many people sat around doing nothing before the game. The Galaxy representatives selling tickets were clueless when asked questions about this. As always, the food quality and selection was poor. The beer selection is also poor. Where are the credit card machines? Levy Restaurants does a much better job at the Staples Center. Their food and service at the Home Depot Center seems such second rate.

    Galaxy vs. Revolution & Fireworks

by svelasco on 7/5/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

The game was exciting, the staff did a wonderful job of providing guidance regarding seat locations and the food stands were well staff so the wait time was reasonable. The fireworks show was great! The diverse fireworks and music used for the display was a lot of fun.

    Gooooooooooooooool!

by rotesmadchen on 7/5/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

The 4th of July LA Galaxy game is always a crowd pleaser! It's been my annual tradition to attend for the past 10+ years--can't remember the last time I missed it. This year was no different. The only issue I have is with the parking. This time I got in relatively quick, but trying to exit the parking lot took a long time, as usual. However, as long as you know this (which from years of going to the games I do) and you try to have a little patience, it's not a huge deal. There is always police and traffic control to help--as long as everybody pays attention to what they're supposed to be doing, it all works out fine.

    Galaxy Fires Up Again!

by JoJoJo on 7/5/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

When we realized that neither of the Donovans would be playing this match, admittedly we were worried. However, with the initial challenging by the Galaxy against New England, there was a glimmer of new hope. In the back of our minds was the recent win against the highly-touted Houston Dynamo. If the Galaxy could best them, then a victory against the Revolution was more than a distinct possibility. Besides, Twellman and Albright were out with injuries. From the start, goalkeeper Josh Saunders was looking good, blocking a rocket-blaster shot from New England early in the first half. The entire team seemed transformed from the seemingly unmotivated team we saw last year and earlier this year. Everyone was working hard. Landon would be proud of the effort. Some added fun for all of us Galaxy fans was the constant booing from the LA side, every time the Revolutions' #29, Kenny Mansally, got the ball or challenged our own A.J. DeLaGarza. After some initial hard, nasty defending by Mansally, he could do no right by Galaxy fans. The two went at it most of the match. Seeing the Galaxy play on July 4th has been somewhat of a tradition for us the past few years. It's a fun event seeing the game, then the fireworks show afterward. This year, though, a new "independence" was felt with this second-in-a-row win by the Galaxy. We can now feel good in looking forward to their upward climb as the season goes forward.

by Rogue on 7/5/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

The game was great because La galaxy won. The ambiance was familiy friendly probably because no one was willing to do $10 a beer. the arena was a decent size I got the cheapest tickets and still managed to get great seats! awesome experience would definitely recommend.

    Exciting game

by Sneeto on 7/5/09The Home Depot Center - Carson

The Home Depot Center is a really great stadium. It's not over the top huge, but every seat is good. The night games give the stadium a very fun atmosphere as they use dark blue lighting to illuminate the stadium to reflect the LA Galaxy colors. The game was very exciting as always by the LA Galaxy. Any soccer fans would have been thrilled to be there. The stadium and fans can get loud and supportive, but it is a great place to bring your family and children. The opening ceremony was fun with the violinist as well as the starting fireworks. Afterward there was a fireworks show that thrilled everyone that was watching them. Overall the event was absolutely worth spending the 4th of July at. I would highly recommend to anyone to look into doing this next year if the option is available to them.
