  • Romantic and deep love in poverty youth.

by karoyakani on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Superbly performed from an light encounter to the grave end. Brilliant popular melody sitting on top of complex overlapping chorus and orchestra. Stage setting also excellent and pleasantly surprising with hanging posters and curtains.

  • Outstanding

by cavinu on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Outstanding performance as a whole. The "Rodolfo" was a little uneven in the first act but "warmed up" and didn't miss a note that I could hear through the rest of the performance. All performers were outstanding and were good actors, not just good voices. The venue is comfortable and the staff professional. The intermission service at the bar was slow but the staff knew what they were doing.

  • Wonderful Production

by KerryD on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Tenor Arturo Cacon-Cruz stole the show--we'll be hearing a lot more about this singer who is mentored by Placido Domingo.

  • It was alright

I love the theatre, and I love almost any production. But i found La Boheme to be a bit boring.

  • Unforgettable night with Puccini's Masterpiece!

by JSArmstrong on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

La Boheme has always been my favorite and first opera!! I listened to and fell in love with the libretto and music of La Boheme a few years ago. When I found out that Portland Opera would put on La Boheme this season, I knew that I had to see it. For my first opera to see, this amazing masterpiece would be it!! Kelly Kaduce led a believable performance as Mimi. Who wouldn't fall in love with her performance of "Mi chiamano Mimi?" It lacked nothing. Arturo Chacon-Cruz brought out "Che gelida manini" so well that night. His beautiful vocal style brought this aria more to my attention than ever before. I love how Mimi and Rodolfo end "O soave fanciulla" while walking off-stage as they go to the cafe. Musetta, a very dynamic character, was played out perfectly by Alyson Cambridge. Bravo! I found the scene when Mimi and Rodolfo meet and help love along by blowing out their candles interesting and comical. My favorite moment is when Mimi and Rodolfo hug each other before she dies. Everyone has left them alone in the garret and they embrace each other while part of "O soave fanciulla" is played by the orchestra. Beautiful and heartbreaking!

  • High quality opera

    by PeterT1 on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Should someone ask me about Portland opera 10 years ago, I 'd say it was kind of third grade, slightly "amateurish" etc. Things are very different today. I would not place any single complain or point to any weakness. Superb voices, young good looking actors, excellent decorations, well balanced orchestra - everything was first rate.

  • la Boheme is Timeless

by Leilah on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

They have such magnificent voices and do such memorable acting. It made this a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend it to my friends. The costuming was also truly amazing.

Even better than I'd expected. The orchestra was absolutely mindblowing.

If you have never been to the opera, this is the one to see for your first time. It will be an amazing unforgettable time!

  • Excellent playing

by Jinodo on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The conductor was excellent and he directed the artists to play the impressive story by memorable music. And actors and actress are wonderful. Through their songs, I understood what is real love.

  • La Boheme comes to Portland

by Myfirstopera on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

This was a beautiful performance. This opera is 113 years old and it was lovely to experience. The English subheadings made it easy for a newbie like me to follow along with the story. It was just a perfectly enjoyable evening.

  • La Boheme was amazing!

    by Stbx531 on 9/26/09Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

This opera was everything it was advertised to be: funny, poignant, romantic, and a real tear-jerker. It is recommended to bring plenty of tissues with you when you see this!

    by Bubbles92 on 9/5/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 4 out of 5

The way La Boheme was done this time was a truly amazing experience. One was able to focus on the story and the wonderful singing. It was truly a wonderful evening out with my girls.

  • Exceptional Performances

by RagingMoose on 8/23/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 5 out of 5

The performance by each member was superb ... the technique of incorporating live illustrations rather than traditional elaborate stage sets added to the poignancy of this achingly beautiful classic. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

  • The sympony and singing were of very good quality

by DiannaK on 8/23/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 3 out of 5

The singers and symphony were of very good quality I was disappointed in the informality of the costumes: The children in the choir were allowed to run around on the stage initially without supervision and I thought that was inappropriate for an opera

  • LABoheme in Duluth MN

by NonaAnn on 8/22/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed the opera but would prefer to have the costumes and scenario. The illustrator did a good job .

  • La Boheme Missed Awesome

by teakay on 8/21/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 4 out of 5

The singers, the illustrator, the choir and orchestra were excellent! The lack of a set (illustrator helped) and no costumes were the only things from keeping this performance receiving an awesome rating....

  • La Boheme was fabulous

by Ridgefan on 8/21/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 4 out of 5

I was overtaken with the beauty of the music! The cast and orchestra were outrageously wonderful! The artist was fantastic! My only complaint is that I would have liked seeing the sets and the cast in real costumes. It is good to try something new, but I'm old fashioned in some ways, and traditional costumes would have made it a bit more fun.

  • Great production, complicated staging

by RangerOne on 8/21/09DECC Auditorium - DuluthRating: 4 out of 5

The Duluth Festival Opera's production of La Boheme was not a full stage production, due to financial problems. However, their "experiment" was a wonderful presentation. The music was the best I've heard from local talent. The biggest problem I had was trying to watch the actors, orchestra, chorus, subtitles and artistic drawings all at the same time. I would have left out the projected live drawing and raised the height and size of the subtitles. Overall, a wonderful experience.
