About

Kris Kristofferson on Tour

When Kris Kristofferson hits the stage, it's clear why he's become a legend of outlaw country. He plays it like he feels it — as an unfancy, master singer-songwriter, sometimes with a band and sometimes without, strumming his acoustic guitar and delivering his game-changing songs with well-weathered style. His character-rich voice lets you know he's been around the block more than once, and the songs combine a poet's command of language with a country singer's knack for putting things together organically so they go down easy. Along the way, he slips in his one-of-a-kind perspective on things. He might be unpacking the wistful romanticism of "Me and Bobby McGee" or depicting the morning-after madness of "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," but he always makes you see the world a bit differently.

Kris Kristofferson in Concert

After Kris Kristofferson first started making waves in Nashville in the late '60s, country music (and American music) was forever changed. Singer-songwriters had never written so frankly about sensuality, and country had never had its own Bob Dylan before. With Kristofferson came a glorious collision of poetry-laden lyrics and countercultural sensibilities with the attitude of rock 'n' roll and the template of classic country. Besides making waves with his own albums, he reached into our collective conscience through his songs' numerous covers, performed by artists like Janis Joplin ("Me and Bobby McGee") and Sammi Smith ("Help Me Make It Through the Night"). Before the '70s were over, his natural charisma and chiseled countenance had helped make him a movie star too, with films like Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and A Star Is Born. Later he became a member of legendary supergroup The Highwaymen, alongside Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. As the decades passed, Kristofferson has never backed away from his commitment to write and perform to the utmost of his abilities. He's a true-blue American legend.

I loved the concert by Kris Kristofferson. I hope he comes back to SC soon. I will go see him every chance I get. The 1st album I ever bought was "Jesus Was A Capricorn". Wish I had taken it with me to the concert for him to sign !

Great evening. So thankful to have the opportunity to see Kris. He is such a talented song writer and performer. We loved all the songs, especially "Sky King". Thanks Kris, T.J., and WEZL!

  • True American Poet

by TMLJr on 1/31/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Kris Kristofferson is a true American poet who did not disappoint. It was so refreshing to see a raw, sincere performance from a man that has nothing left to prove to the music industry or the public. He simply spent an evening sharing his genius on a personal level, with his fans... Thanks Kris.

  • Kristofferson rocked

by BeninSC on 1/31/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

At 73, Kristofferson has seen, met, and written about many of the seminal events of the past 50 years. His voice, lyrics, and genuine appreciation of his work and his fans resonated with the crowd in N. Charleston -- many of whom were 55 and above. At 48, I was among the youngest in the crowd. Some younger fans made their way to the show, and I'm sure they were as captivated as I was. Incredible show.

  • Honest and Intimate

by CleoSue on 1/31/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Just Kris, his guitar and his harmonica - no band. One of the best concerts ever. Kris' performance seemed honest and he seemed humbled that so many folks came out to see him. The Ryman auditorium in Nashville is the best for this type of intimaacy.

Just Kris, a guitar and a harmonica. It doesn't get much better. Very casual, laid back and interesting stories about where songs came from. Not only a great songwriter, but a great entertainer, as well. Comes across as very likable.

  • Kistofferson, Awesome!

by pattyscat on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I have waited for more years than I like to think of to hear him in person. The experience was every thing I hoped for and more. The venue is large, but the sound was like we could have been in a small arena.

I have been a Kristofferson fan for almost 40 years and have seen him perform solo and with Rita Coolidge when they were married. I loved last night's performance-seeing him again brought such wonderful memories!!! Yes, he had some lapses/mistakes, but how wonderful to have someone of his stature be able to acknowledge mistakes, laugh, and move on. I especially loved his comment to the woman in the audience who was trying to "pick him up" when he said something like "Honey, I'm 73, but I'm flattered". I absolutely adore him and loved the performance!

  • The Other Side of Pain

by VierowLW on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

After being in physical pain for 50 years, My doctors often tell me about getting to the other side of pain. Pain is pain, I've thought, Until one day I laid down with Kris' music near my ear. As I listened to the words I started singing along in my mind. The longer I related to the words, the more the pain moved aside. I became angry when the music stopped and I became aware of the pain creeping back. I realized, for two 1/2 hours on Friday night, I was on the other side of my pain. I hope someone tells Kris how important his music is to some of us!

  • Kris was fantastic

by Pokmahon on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

This show was absolutely the best. My friends and I all thought the show was great and could have sat though it again. I have been a fan of Kris's for more years than I want to remember and he can still turn me on. Sexiest voice ever. Kris even at 72 yrs old you are still the sexiest man alive!! Keep coming back to Charleston.

  • Kris is still on top of it at 73

by ananceart on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I was not sure when we walked in and saw only a music stand and a mike stand on the stage. No band or other insturments, not even a guitar stand. When Kris came out with guitar in hand he started to play and sing the songs that have made him so endeared to several generations of music lovers. It does not mater what kind of music you like, he has written somethin you will know and love. For over two hours you are taken back and forward with your emotions. Bravo, bravo, to Kris and a wonderful evening of music.

This is the first time I saw Kris in person. I've never been a particular fan of his; however, I did enjoy it to some degree. It was just nice seeing the legendary Kris Kristopherson. He was very personable, friendly and outgoing on stage. He did throw in a little politics which I wasn't particularly crazy about. However, it wasn't a lot so I was okay with it. I would not have paid more then $35 to see him, but it was worth that amount overall.

Kris gets better and better, with age. Huge sense of humor, along with his always inspiring music. I live for his shows!

  • Kristofferson in Charleston SC-1/29/10

by Mohawk52 on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 2 out of 5

Only stayed for the first 45 minute set before leaving at intermission for a series of reasons. Kris Kristofferson was off his game and seemed to be fighting a cold. It was an acoustic show, just he, the guitar and harmonica. He found his voice about 20 minutes in, but struggled some with lyrics and chords. Performing solo was an error in judgment this night. He joked with fans, and they clearly maintained their affinity for him though his approach was not conducive or a sing-along or clap-along show. Mostly, he vamped through the initial set. I was near the sound-board and saw the song-list for part two and it looked like a long evening before getting to tunes folks know well, as he saved those for the finale and encore. Really not worth sitting around for over 2 hrs since he had so little energy. And it's time to stop hammering Bush and Cheney between songs, Kris. But you are still a legend.

  • Still a Troubadour

by TheOldFolkie on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

The magic is stilll there. I haven't seen Kris in a small venue (< 10,000 seats) since the late '60s at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village (seating maybe 100 max). He still has the capability to captivate an audience. Overall the show was so mesmerizing that long-time fans were able to forgive the occasional fat-fingering and fumbling with lyrics. After all, as he reminded a woman in the audience who wanted to "lay down by [his] side", he is 73!! And Kris, this was Charleston, not Charlotte.

  • Kris Kristofferson

by Seaducks on 1/30/10North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 2 out of 5

Kris Kristofferson 's performance last night confirmed that he is still a better sign writer than a performer. While his voice still has some of the fine qualities that he used to have back in the 70's, age is catching up with him. At times he seemed to be truely lost on stage and kept on saying "Thank you" after every song. He left out words and kept telling the audience not to clap because they couldn't keep in time with him and he was correct. He was truely humbled when the crowd stood up on several occations. The performance was short with approx. two 45 minute segments and a twenty-two minute intermission. Overall Kris played a lot of old song, most made famous by other musicians, but some of them brought back some good memories.
