About

Kris Kristofferson on Tour

When Kris Kristofferson hits the stage, it's clear why he's become a legend of outlaw country. He plays it like he feels it — as an unfancy, master singer-songwriter, sometimes with a band and sometimes without, strumming his acoustic guitar and delivering his game-changing songs with well-weathered style. His character-rich voice lets you know he's been around the block more than once, and the songs combine a poet's command of language with a country singer's knack for putting things together organically so they go down easy. Along the way, he slips in his one-of-a-kind perspective on things. He might be unpacking the wistful romanticism of "Me and Bobby McGee" or depicting the morning-after madness of "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," but he always makes you see the world a bit differently.

Kris Kristofferson in Concert

After Kris Kristofferson first started making waves in Nashville in the late '60s, country music (and American music) was forever changed. Singer-songwriters had never written so frankly about sensuality, and country had never had its own Bob Dylan before. With Kristofferson came a glorious collision of poetry-laden lyrics and countercultural sensibilities with the attitude of rock 'n' roll and the template of classic country. Besides making waves with his own albums, he reached into our collective conscience through his songs' numerous covers, performed by artists like Janis Joplin ("Me and Bobby McGee") and Sammi Smith ("Help Me Make It Through the Night"). Before the '70s were over, his natural charisma and chiseled countenance had helped make him a movie star too, with films like Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and A Star Is Born. Later he became a member of legendary supergroup The Highwaymen, alongside Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. As the decades passed, Kristofferson has never backed away from his commitment to write and perform to the utmost of his abilities. He's a true-blue American legend.

I have always wanted to see Kris & I loved it. The Pageant is a great venue. He played for two hours to a sold out crowd & I could see he was very appreciative of the audience.

  • Kris Kristofferson in Columbus, OH

by WoundedBrother on 5/21/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Kris gave a great show before a very enthusiastic crowd. He performed a mixture of his well known standards and his thoughtful but lesser known works. We felt very privileged to have seen him in person while he is still touring.

  • Silver-Tounged Legend

by RockTraveler on 5/20/17Southern Theatre - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Having grown up listening to Kris Kristofferson by way of my stepfather, it seemed fitting to take him to see his hero at the Southern Theatre last Wednesday. We were both excited and were ultimately NOT disappointed when the nearly 81-year singer/songwriter old took to the stage alone with just his guitar. Dressed in black and still sporting a good amount of gray hair, Kris launched into an unforgettable evening of storytelling through his legendary songwriting. In between songs, Kris kept the banter to a minimum and instead let the words and sparse music do the talking to a thrilled Ohio audience. His playing, while competent and befitting the overall mood, was what you'd expect of someone of his age (and mileage). He made no attempts at chords, soloing, or other extravagant flourishes. Instead he picked notes faintly and even ended songs abruptly while shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders apologetically. The crowd only seemed to love him more for it. I later learned that his memory has sadly failed him recently, although the video-assist monitor onstage insured no mix-ups on his hard-hitting lyrics. Overall, it was a thrill to see this veteran play out all his best hits and intersperse them with other gems. While many of his contemporaries have long gone, Kris still seemed to enjoy his magical way of connecting by storytelling before an adoring audience. Class and style that are one-of-a-kind came to Columbus that night and we had a blast.

  • Sad at the Performance

    by Sail43 on 5/20/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 2 out of 5

I have been a fan of Kris Kristofferson since the 1970s. I love his music and the films he has made. I have always wanted to see him in person. . The performance was marketed as an "Evening with Kris Kristofferson ". Kris was a solo act and performed two sets of music with each being approximately 45 minutes with a 20 minute intermission. . I assumed the songs were ones he had written but I did not recognize many of them. Chris's voice was weak and monotone. Many times he missed a note on the guitar. I had hoped he would have his band and perform the many songs that made him famous. This was a very low energy performance. However, at 80 years old it was an acceptable performance. This performance was not up to the standard performances I expected from his records and films. Age has taken a told on his ability to perform. I am glad I went to the performance and finally saw him in person . That being said, I was disappointed in the evening I spent with him. The Harrison Opera House, in Norfolk, Va , where I saw him perform,,is a great venue. However there was no announcement prior to the show about cell phones and flash photography. The cell phone and flash photography was very distracting. To make matters worse, several staff members kept walking up/down aisles and shining flash lights on the people with the cell phones cameras. While I understand people want to record memories of the show, it was very reflected of the "ME GENERATION" that has no consideration for the audience who also paid to see the performance. Many of them had large screens that were bright. They tried to record whole songs and that meant the light stayed on several minutes. Those using flashes weren't as bad but was also distracting. Many times it was as if lighting strikes were going off inside the building.

Disappointed that it was just Kris and his guitar. the show need more. Kris interacted very little with the audience. While is was good to hear his songs, the performance was weak. Felt like we were just contributing to his retirement fund.

  • Time for this talent to step off of the live stage

by DebDave on 5/18/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 1 out of 5

I've never walked out of a concert; nothing is so bad that I don't stay and get my money's worth. Tonight was a very sad first for Dave and me. Because we really enjoyed a Kris Kristofferson concert 3-4 years ago, we've been waiting for the past 4 months, since we eagerly awaited 10am on a January Friday to jump on the nest tix, to see him again. Sadly, we and several others left at intermission tonight; he just doesn't have "it" any more. No good guitar playing; just the same 4- or 5-string picks/tune (lack of tune) for just about every song, with only a few key changes in the whole 45-min first half. His voice is pretty monotone these days, with about as much variety as his guitar playing. And he just stopped short, skipping the final stanza of at least 3 songs. And no interaction with the audience except for "Happy Mother's Day" and "I wrote this one for my kids." While he wasn't extremely interactive 4 years ago, we felt like he was sharing his talent with us and not just enduring his 90-min requirement. So sad that age finally has caught up to this songwriting genius, and apparently only in the past several years, as he was pretty good last time we saw him. If tonight was a fluke, I hope he fixes whatever the problem is/was. If it's time for him to stop touring, I hope he can recognize and gracefully do it.

He is an ICON, so glad we got to see him, he did not disappoint, the Opera House is a lovey venue and we like the intimate setting

  • Fantastic

by tschafer on 5/17/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

This was a birthday gift to my husband. He had the pleasure of hanging out with Mr. Kristofferson on a movie set and he wanted to see him in concert because he has always been a huge fan. The concert started on time and the songs he sang had me saying "I didn't know he wrote that". This man is so gifted, he didn't miss a beat. The event was laid back and filled with great music. I wish him a grand world tour.

  • Kris Kristofferson still going strong!

by Astrella on 5/17/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

Kris Kristofferson is no doubt a very talented and entertaining performer! The concert was definitely an evening with just Kris Kristofferson. No back up singers, no band, just Kris alone on stage with his guitar, which was great! The only disappointing part of the concert was that the merchandising van never showed up. Lots of upset and disappointed people, but I've always wanted to see Kris Kristofferson in concert and now I can check that off my bucket list!

  • Mesmerizing!

by tappygurl on 5/17/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Kris is still the most handsome and sexy man alive! I have loved him since seeing him in "A Star is Born." He is mesmerizing! I was in heaven every minute he sang. I laughed, I cried twice (during Nobody Wins and Daddy) and I melted during For the Good Times. What a consummate poet and troubadour! He's ageless and timeless and I'm so very glad I saw him. It was an honor to be in the same room with one of God's finest creations!

  • Great concert; childish audience

    by ponygirl359 on 5/17/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

What an amazing opportunity to see one of the greatest songwriters of our time for who knows if it may be one of the last times! He was in top form as far as I was concerned in good voice and played a great setlist. The audience on the other hand was more immature than if I had been to a Justin Bieber concert -- flash photography throughout the whole show, constantly texting on their phones, talking over the music and one women yelling how she wanted to sleep with Kris!!! Really -- the majority of this crowd had to be in their late 60s and 70s! Grow up!!!! It did not totally take away from the show but this was NOT a beer hall -- it was an OPERA hall. Know your venue. I wish Kris would have told them to knock if off.

  • Kris exceeded expectations

    by Stealth007 on 5/17/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Never being able to see Kris in concert didn't know what to expect from a 80 year old performer. Kris has a unique talent for writing songs about life. At 80 years old it amazing he still has the talent to perform live concerts. Maybe not as sharp as 20 years ago but still a great concert by one of the legendary song writers.

  • by Homey227 on 5/17/17Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

Sounded and looked great but didn't talk at all other than a quick bit about Bob Dylan. Very enjoyable evening.

  • A meaningful night

by Inkyfingers on 5/15/17Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The only way to really describe this concert is to call it moving. For long time fans, the evening took on a personal feeling with Kristofferson sending out his lyrics almost at an individual level. He clearly remains the brilliant and insightful poet/songwriter we all have known so well for so many years, but when he sang "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" it had a truthfulness that was both difficult and honest. If you're a long time follower and fan...a real fan...do NOT miss this opportunity.

  • Kris still holds strong!

An evening with a legend! Humble and talented stood the entire show just himself, his guitar and harmonica! Fantastic event!

  • Thank you Kris

I was so happy to spend the evening with you and relive some of my the days of my life. Your songs have been been with me for over forty years (saw you back in 1974). Your work has been a great part of my life. It was a show that I will not forget.

    by Linda2017 on 5/14/17Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Kris Kristofferson for the first time and loved the show. He sang for 2 hours with a short break - just him without a band. You could tell he thoroughly enjoyed being there with the audience. He still has the ability to draw people in to see his show. Highly recommend seeing him if you have the chance. Hope he tours again in this area of the country - will go again

  • It doesn't get better than Kris

It was a magical night. I will never get tired of listening to Kris. His songs are amazing and he still sounds great. If he comes back to the Boston area, I'll be there.
