KING CRIMSON IN CONCERT:
You can't keep a good band down -- legendary prog rock pioneers King Crimson ended a five-year hiatus in 2014 with the announcement of a fall US tour. The group has called it quits several times over the decades, but their love of music and passion for performing always bring them back to the stage. The band's current lineup -- its eighth since 1969 -- includes founder and primary creative force Robert Fripp alongside three drummers, two guitar players, and a flutist-saxophonist. Beloved for their virtuosic musicianship and extended live jamming, the veteran performers will take fans on an unforgettable musical journey through their hallowed discography on their An Evening with King Crimson tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
King Crimson was formed in Dorset, UK in 1968 by guitarist Robert Fripp and brothers Michael and Peter Giles. The band's acclaimed 1969 debut In the Court of the Crimson King established what would become the hallmarks of British progressive rock, with its emphasis on instrumental expertise, use of vanguard musical technologies, and fusion of rock forms with classical and jazz styles. By the time they released their 1970 sophomore album In the Wake of Poseidon the band had already undergone the first of many lineup changes, but despite the shakeup the album still landed at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. In the decades that followed, King Crimson's rotating roster of players produced an impressive string of Top 40 albums, establishing them as one of the era's most revered progressive rock acts. Despite several hiatuses over the years, the band continues to reunite for occasional albums and tours. Robert Fripp and Co. thrilled fans once again in 2014 with the announcement of An Evening with Crimson, their highly anticipated fall US tour.

I have been a big fan of King Crimson since I first heard one of their albums (yup - good ol' vinyl) in 1985. I have made it a point to see them anytime they are in the Boston area and I have seen them without fail since 2014. King Crimson members are incredible, world-class musicians and performers who put on an incredibly precise and almost flawless show every time they perform. I have never been disappointed by the set list they choose on any given night, especially when they pull out a classic gem from their extensive back catalog - sometimes a song that has not been heard live for literally decades, or has never been officially released on vinyl/cassette/CD/streaming service. The show on Friday night was amazing on all counts - the weather was fine, the sound was great, the venue was very nice, and the band was in top form from the first song right through to final encore. I could not have asked for better overall experience.
While each of these acts are an acquired taste, it was an evening to remember. I've seen iterations of both bands going back to 1980. While the turmoil between Frank's kids is really disappointing, The Zappa Band was fantastic. Great selection of tunes, and it was especially great to see Ray White again doing Zappa's music. There are just not enough words to describe King Crimson's set. I've seen this edition of the band 2-3 times over the last number of years, each time better than the last. This show topped them all - it was simply other worldly. Sad to hear it may have been their last live show in Boston, but if they come back I'll be there.
The talent from both bands was just amazing!! The sound was fantastic. The Leader Bank Pavilion is a great place to hear good music.
Zappa and King Crimson were awesome. King Crimson was an extrodinary musical experience. Three drum sets was a surprise and absolutely incredible!! Pure music.
Everything was great, King Crimson was out of this world, thank you for an awesome night
Zappa band opened with a set of eclectic Zappa songs performed masterfully, showcasing the vast talents of the band along with an appreciation for just how masterful Frank Zappa was as a guitarist and also as a composer. I was delightfully pleased. King Crimson followed with their own set of both fan favs along with others that highlighted different iterations of the band throughout the years. In typical fashion, all were executed with a high degree of precision, highlighted by the vast contrast of crescendos, pianoforte and percussion. No one builds anticipation in a song like King Crimson. Well Done
They were beyond masters of their craft and performed an immaculate set spanning the band's entire career. I was blessed to have been able to witness this show.
Great show Always good but really enjoyed King Crimson The Frankless Zappa band was good but something was missing ( like Dweezle )
2nd time seeing them on this tour and they are an incredible, tight, intense band. Over 2 hours of great musicianship.
I enjoyed seeing King Crimson (along with the opening act, The Zappa Band) at The Beacon Theater. Both bands were at the Very Top of their game and I had a great time.
King Crimson was, without exception, one of those music experiences were you feel that every cell in your body was activated and elevated to a higher, profound vibration. One leaves their concert happy, joyously fullfilled and content. Having the Zappa band open for them got the crowd excited and ready for an outstanding evening. Magnificent in every way.
Energy, orinallity, artistic taste… the same after all these years.
Just an awesome musical experience. I would recommend anyone to go and see King Crimson.
I go to many many shows since I was a kid; King Crimson was one of the most unique experiences I have had. Good thing I caught them since it’s their final tour.
I absolutely loved the show. Would have loved to hear the full set though. Seems the show at the Beacon was several tracks shorter than other concerts on this tour.
Great venue and an amazing band. Love the Beacon Theater. Can wait for another show.
I ask for a recording of this show on Thursday, September 9 2021 to be released. On DGMLIVE or the KC website, or the streaming services, please release this as an official or unofficial “bootleg.” It was a great evening at a great venue, with great sound. Great performances and great set list. I would buy it.
KC has been around on and off for over 50 years. This tour is concentrating more on their late 60s/early 70s material. I enjoy it all but might like that era the best. Three drummers all out in front, no one has that kind of set up. The band always went through members over the years but it was nice that besides the one stalwart Robert Fripp, there was a veteran of the 70s band there as well as a long term member of the 80s and 90s versions. Just wish they could have played longer but quite a good show. No audience banter expect for a (pre-recorded?) message played before they took the stage from Fripp. Be nice if they could have introduced all the band members with 7 men on stage.
It was Thursday night, the rain had stopped, the Beacon went dark and the DRUMS, DRUMS, DRUMS, started! It was quite the Spectacle! Mr Robert, slinkily grooving with unmitigated audacity, kept his crew Quick, Tight and Bold, delivering the goods! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! It was my 3rd or 4th King Crimson show since the early 80's and I'll keep eyes open for their next NYC show! *oh... The Zappa Band was also such a treat! They were tight and on point and brought back some spectacular memories! It was my first show since Nov 2019 and what a way to get back in the game!
