  • Keiko Matsui was on top of her game!

by cwgator77 on 10/1/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a fan of Keko Matsiu ever since I was introduced to her via BET on Jazz back in 1994. The album released during that time was "Doll" which is still my favorite album by her. I have most of her discography which is quite vast (Over 20 US album releases alone) and have many favorites. This was my first time seeing her perform live in person and it was really wonderful and definitely fulfilled one of my lifetime dreams in terms of say a "bucket list". Keiko is a very humble performer who doesn't mind sharing the stage with other artists and band mates. Each of them had multiple areas to shine in solos and recognition. These include a saxophonist (Jackiem Joyner-which I will go on more further down), guitarist (Blake Aaron), bass (Eric Baines) and drummer (can't remember his name). Hearing her music on cd/mp3/radio or wherever is one thing. This includes live recording DVD's.VHS, etc. It's a whole different experience being there live while she's performing. Some songs I may not have paid attention to before end up becoming instant favorites just because of this. She definitely has a gift and I aspire to be almost as good as her one day as I also play piano. On stage with her and other band members was Jackiem Joyner who plays saxophone, flute and a composer also. He's my favorite sax player. I was introduced to him while listening to Pandora radio earlier this year as a similar artist to Keiko. I found out he he had been touring as part of her band and recorded on her most recent album "The Road...". I have his discography as well. It was great getting to see him play in person. It was like getting to see 2 concerts in one with him, even tho it was only Keiko's music that was played. He's also really gifted and has revived my wanting to learn to play sax on top of the other instruments I can play (piano, percussion). After the show she she was in the lobby signing autographs and posing for pictures. I had the chance to shake her hand and speak with her briefly while getting some pictures with her. It was overall a great night. I hope I can see her again soon.

  • even better in person

by jazzbaroness on 4/26/12B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have been listening to Keiko for about 15 years. Never dreamed I'd be able to actually see her in person. If you are moved by her music on a cd, it does not even come close to how she sounds in person. She is worth way more than the asking price of her tickets. Hope she comes back to NYC or Philadelphia. YOU GO GIRL!!!! Her bandmates were equally as impressive. One of the best shows I have ever seen!

  • keiko a must see!

  • Keiko Matsui Way Too Loud

by Sincerereview on 10/20/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 1 out of 5

I LOVE Keiko Matsui's music, ON CD. The Birchmere is quite intimate, so it was a delight to SEE Ms. Matsui up close. HOWEVER, the sound level was earsplitting and this totally prevented enjoying the concert. Ms. Matsui's music is wonderfully nuanced - often characterized as smooth jazz and new age. It is certainly NOT heavy metal or other heavy rock. Unfortunately, the sound level at this concert was so high that there was nothing smooth or comfortable about this experience. I have enjoyed many other performances at the Birchmere, at much more moderate and reasonable sound levels befitting the artist and their music.

Kiesko was wonderful. Her band was also wonderful. When she plays, you can feel what she feel by looking at her boby language. You can tell she loves to play the piano. Her band know is on point. It was a awesome show. Can wait to see her again.

  • Keiko Swings in Times Square

by ChicagoFanTravels2NYC on 5/30/11B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The ever gracious, lovely, and extremely talented Japanese pianist and her band played two identical shows on a Sunday evening at BB KIngs in Times Square after having performed for Japan Day in Cental Park earlier in the day. Keiko introduced most of the songs with some details about how they were composed and titled. The majority of the set focused on the newly released album "The Road..." (don't forget the dot, dot, dots, that represent the continuing road that each of our lives follows). Although her music is categorized as New Age and Smooth Jazz, and many selections performed that evening would certainly fit those descriptions, the band and pianist took time to swing on a number of selections that also included plenty of solo time for each band member. Keiko's band really "rocked" (as she might say). The first show was a sell out, but plenty of empty seats and space for the second show made for a quite intimate setting to see and hear the internationally acclaimed artist. Although some may complain that more (new) material should have been included on "The Road...", the direction that Keiko is taking on her "new journey" is a welcome and positive one. Stop in Chicago soon, Keiko.

I have been a fan of Keiko for years. Her amazing talent is evident the moment she touches the piano keys. The atmosphere/ambience at BB Kings was just right!!
