English rockers Keane play a unique brand of alternative rock that highlights the piano instead of the more traditionally favored guitar. The band is made up of lead singer Tom Chaplin, drummer Richard Hughes, bassist Jesse Quin and pianist Tim Rice-Oxley. Anyone who has been to a Keane concert tends to talk about the infectious excitement coming from the stage, with a fun light show in the background to add to the atmosphere. In particular, during the tour to promote their Strangeland album, even the ballads they performed were described by ticket holders as rousing and energetic.
The band is named after a family friend who at one time cared for and inspired some of the band members, most of whom met in England at a young age. Though Keane has gone through some changes since the beginning, including the departure of guitarist and founder Dominic Scott, the band managed to find success after releasing its first album, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. Some of the album's most popular songs included "Somewhere Only We Know," "Bend and Break" and "Everybody's Changing." In 2006, Under the Iron Sea was released, bringing with it the hit songs "Is It Any Wonder?" and "Atlantic." That album was followed by Perfect Symmetry in 2008, which brought back the use of the guitar and also increased the band's reliance on synthesizers.
Strangeland was released in 2010, becoming Keane's fifth album in a row to garner the No. 1 spot on the UK Albums Chart. After The Best of Keane album was released in 2013, the members of the band announced that they would be taking a break to relax after several busy years of making music.
first time at the aragon. interesting place, and surprisingly pretty good for an act like Keane.
The Aragon Ballroom was a sweet venue... and Keane is amazing live. They sound just like they do on the album! Great show and their music is good for all ages. I will definitely be at the next one!
Music was great. A whole lot of energy. Aragon venue is nostalgic but a bit too large. Volume was too high, ears were ringing at the end of show. Would not miss this concert for anything- but earplugs were needed.
Probably one of the better concerts I've seen this year. They rocked!
This show was AMAZING! Tom Chaplin's energy is simply amazing and his singing never sounded better. I loved the show from start to finish...it was full of emotion and energy.
They sounded great and performed ALL of the songs I was looking forward to hearing. My favorite was 'Spiraling' because the crowd and band made it livlier! We had a great time and I'd definately see them again and recommend their concert!
One of the best shows I've ever seen. Great venue too.
Lots of energy, band was tight and the lead was very engaging....played everything I hoped to hear - great show!
We go to about 5 concerts a month... Keane is one we never miss. Such a great sound and amazing energy. This band has all the right ingredients and continues to evolve. Great pop... Excellent sound and everyone moved throughout the show.
I had waited for Keane to come to Minnesota for a long time.I enjoyed the show very much, loved it!!!
I was speechless by their energy and the connection they have with their fans. There seemed to be magic in the air that night and Keane never missed a beat.Every song was played out with perfection and Keane knew exactly which of their songs were among the favorites fans wanted to hear. The emotionality between these band members is mezmerizing ,as is Tom Chaplin when he is on stage performing. In my opinion he is one of the best frontmen of my time, showing boundless energy & a deep need to satisfy & please his fans. Keane fans are among some of the most devoted fans around the world, we are a communtiy and this band unites us from all over the globe.Keane is a band that I think every one should see perform at least once, that is all it will take for them to fall in love with the band and their music!! I am a forever fan!!
Keane was absolutely unbelievable. They were so genuine and so enthusiastic and they were having such a good time on stage which was so much fun to watch. I would go again in a heartbeat!
We have been to four Keane concerts in Denver / Boulder over the past years including Wednesday night at the Ogden and I always tell people that of all the great bands my wife and I have seen over the years, Keane are in our top three for their songs and energy. Are Keane better than or as good as Coldplay? Yes they are in my opinion. I like Coldplay a lot and have seen them every time they have come to Denver (even in the rain storm at Red Rocks) but like Jeremy I have always asked the same question – why aren’t Keane as successful as Coldplay? Keane sell out the London O2 Arena seating over 20,000 yet they play the very small American venues. Tom Chaplin has a far better voice than Chris Martin and the songs are equally as good if not better. Is it the lack of Keane marketing, lack of a lead guitarist in the band (reference the sign Tom took from the audience, “Lean Keane guitarless machine,”)? I can’t put my finger on it but I think it is a combination of few things. This particular Keane concert at the Ogden was good but not the best of the four we have seen over the years. Keane tend to rely heavily on songs from their early albums which is a shame. With reference to Jeremy’s comment “….[Tom] moved fervently around the stage and thrashed his hands and arms about, Michael Stipeishly…”, we all know Tom Chaplin has been in rehab for drugs and alcohol and recovered successfully, but both my wife and I said after the show that Tom appeared to be not all there and I sincerely hope he is not going downhill again. This is a great, great band and I will keep going to their concerts – the atmosphere is electric in the small venues and well worth the $35 a ticket. Thanks to Keane for recognizing that we are in tough times – different to Aerosmith charging close to $200 a ticket at Fiddlers Green – no thanks Aerosmith
Keane is a great British band that sound just as good live than on their CD's. This show was at the Aragon Ballroom, a decent sized venue north of Chicago. This was our first time going there and usually I prefer smaller venues such as the Metro but WOW. The Aragon holds a 2,000 plus crowd and still gives that small venue feeling. The atmosphere there is amazing.
Keane was simply awesome. They sound great live and know how to put out an amazing show for their fans
Excellent show, sound was OK but maybe a different venue next time, Keane was solid musically and vocally and their new stuff sounded superb, Mat Kearney who opened was surprisingly a very solid opener and I enjoyed very much. I will definitely catch Keane next time around.
It doesn't get any better!! KEANE puts on a fabulous show. Never off key, Tom Chaplin works the crowd like he was born to! They are very high energy and all smiles!! LOVE IT!
The night was great--music was fantastic--keane was excellent and I didn't want them to stop, though eventually they had to. The venue worked out perfect, parking was super easy to find on the side streets, which can be a huge problem in chicago at times. The crowd was very energetic and enthusiastic. I haven't been to a great concert like this in ages. I loved it and would love to see them at the Aragon again.
Show was great. Lots of energy. Tim Rice-Oxley never stands still for a minute. My second time seeing Keane, I'd go again fersure.
This was the second time I have seen Keane. I also saw them in Detroit and I didn't think they could get any better I was wrong. Keane were amazing. I have seen hundreds of bands live and I would have to put Keane at the top of my list with Radiohead. Tom Chapin's voice is so pure and powerful it can transport you to another place. I would highly recommend seeing Keane live.
