Kansas City Chiefs History

The Kansas City Chiefs were founded as the Dallas Texans in 1959 by businessman, sports pioneer and American Football League founder Lamar Hunt. The team moved to Kansas City before the 1963 season and were renamed the Chiefs. The team found success early on, winning three AFL championships in the 1960s to become the team with the most championships in the AFL. In 1970, the club joined the NFL when it merged with the AFL. That year, the team won its first AFL-NFL championship in Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings, beating them 23-7.

The Chiefs have had 25 individuals inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and have produced five Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winners — tied with the Chicago Bears for the most of any team.

Head Coach Andy Reid joined the team in 2013, and under his leadership, the Chiefs have made the playoffs consistently. The club won the AFC West from 2016 to 2022 and clinched championship titles at Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Super Bowl LVII in 2023 and Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.

Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium

Opened in 1972, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has a capacity of 76,416. As one of the first stadiums developed after the AFL merged with the NFL, Arrowhead was a leader in stadium design. It introduced the use of arrows on the yard markers at the goal line (eventually becoming a requirement in the NFL), and was the first to be a part of the two-stadium Truman Sports Complex.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is also known to be one of the loudest stadiums in the league. In 2014, fans set a Guinness World Record for stadium noise, registering a sound of 142.2 decibels during a game against the New England Patriots.

    Go Chiefs

by FamBam on 12/29/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Easy parking, great atmosphere, no bad seats in Chiefs stadium thanks to its steep design. Getting out of the parking lot was even easy compared to other venues with thousands of people exiting at the same time.

    Best time ever

by Pam on 12/29/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

My first time to Kansas City to see the Chiefs. We got there early to walk around and experience the food, shopping, and adult beverages. The Chiefs won, that did not hurt! Great time was had by all.

    First Timer!

by S Johnson on 12/29/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

When I found out that the Chiefs were scheduled to play the Steelers I knew I had to go to the game. I have never been to a pro football game before but knowing that Blake Bell with us Chiefs and BJ Finney with the Steelers would be playing against each other I knew I had to go. Both are my cousins. I had a fabulous time and I’m grateful for all of the protocols in place and the fun tailgate activity between the stadiums. One and done! What a blast!

Great game, but the parking experience was a goat rodeo

by Vim on 12/29/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

No organization around parking. There were attendants there but all they did was stand in one spot and made no attempt at managing the parking. It took us a full hour to find a spot which we could squeeze into. Paid $45 for the privilege. Damper on what was otherwise a great day.

    Fun and Excitiing

by sparkles on 12/29/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Shuttles Buses should be more available for the long walk from the stadium to the parking lot. It took awhile to get across the bridge due to the crowd.

Arrowhead: The Best Venue in the NFL

by Historyguy on 12/15/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Of course I'm prejudiced as a Chiefs fan but I don't need the amusement park of the Cowboys or Las Vegas... The whole process of entry, food/snacks all of the amenities were there. Staff at Arrowhead is fantastic friendly very helpful. Their preferred ride service was a piece of cake, quick easy convenient. Our 9th trip to Arrowhead and will be many many more! Thanks!

    best football gave ever !

by J. A. on 12/15/21GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Chiefs won and beat the Raiders hands down no problems, everything went right and very little went wrong, what's not to like about that ! Anytime we can embarrass that team it's all good and we do so regularly i might add. Anyway the stadium is great. Pretty easy to navigate and understand and get to your seat, and the fans are wonderful. Everyone's your friend and at the very least, friendly, just for that 2-3 hours. Restrooms and bar and food is right down at the bottom of the stairs and clean and while your waiting on food or drink you can still watch the game on the tv's !. Just remember to get there little over hour ahead of time maybe 1 1/2 hours early otherwise you'll be standing in line to get in the stadium and the 1st quarter will be over before your seated. Lesson learned again this last time on that.
