Kansas City Chiefs History

The Kansas City Chiefs were founded as the Dallas Texans in 1959 by businessman, sports pioneer and American Football League founder Lamar Hunt. The team moved to Kansas City before the 1963 season and were renamed the Chiefs. The team found success early on, winning three AFL championships in the 1960s to become the team with the most championships in the AFL. In 1970, the club joined the NFL when it merged with the AFL. That year, the team won its first AFL-NFL championship in Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings, beating them 23-7.

The Chiefs have had 25 individuals inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and have produced five Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winners — tied with the Chicago Bears for the most of any team.

Head Coach Andy Reid joined the team in 2013, and under his leadership, the Chiefs have made the playoffs consistently. The club won the AFC West from 2016 to 2022 and clinched championship titles at Super Bowl LIV in 2020 and Super Bowl LVII in 2023.

Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium

Opened in 1972, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has a capacity of 76,416. As one of the first stadiums developed after the AFL merged with the NFL, Arrowhead was a leader in stadium design. It introduced the use of arrows on the yard markers at the goal line (eventually becoming a requirement in the NFL), and was the first to be a part of the two-stadium Truman Sports Complex.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is also known to be one of the loudest stadiums in the league. In 2014, fans set a Guinness World Record for stadium noise, registering a sound of 142.2 decibels during a game against the New England Patriots.

    The Best Rivalry in Sports!

by RaiderNationZ07 on 9/21/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

What a great game. Back and forth and two late TD drives. Raiders and Chiefs continue to be the best rivalry in all of sports. Always a close game for the past decade.

    Game was exciting disappointment

by NewFan205B on 9/21/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

This game was the first NFL game I attended in person; it was our son's 19th birthday, and my mother-in-law chose to attend at the last minute as well. It was the first NFL game any of us had attended in person. Based upon all of the projections, the Chiefs were supposed to win, so all of us were looking forward to the "new" Chiefs first victory. The people-watching was fun at times, distracting at others, and annoying at times as well. The full field view of the game was exhilarating, and more enjoyable than the limited view shown on a TV screen--but I did miss the game commentary (. . . maybe we should've brought a radio for that part?). Obviously, the Chiefs lost--which was the disappointment--but the overrall experience was exciting. However, I don't think I'll pay that much money to go back . . . unless the Chiefs show me they can win, and make the experience worthwhile. Favorite moment? Chief's touchdown: The crowd collectively inhaled and held their breath when the pass was made--an eternity passed in the complete silence of the building tension--and then the stadium erupted when the touchdown was announced. Awesome experience!

    Way to spend a Sunday

by IMissTonyG on 9/21/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Tailgating at Arrowhead is a must... definitely boosts the experience. If you go and don't tailgate, you are truly missing out. (And probably becoming an annoyance to those tailgating as you attempt to park in a full lot... forcing them to move themselves and their grills out of your narrow path.) Arrowhead has a facelift. It's nice... food/drinks are delicious. Great view of the field from ANY seat. Opening festivities were exciting... Raiders fans were rude and smoking in their seats (rule breakers). If they weren't there the whole experience would have been great. The Chiefs' loss was disappointing... but overall... a great day!

Awesome time. Atmosphere is everything and it was delivered. Too bad the Chiefs had to lose in the last two minutes. The fans are definately a team member.

The Parking is Horrendous! Should have bought KU!

by JHAWKMAN on 9/21/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Another horrible performance by the players and several coaching blunders to match. This offense lacks leadership and a good offense line. We are in for a long season. If there is a bright side, it appears as if the defense is improving, although it is tough to get a good read when you play an offense as bad as the Raiders. They couldn't hold it together at the end either. I have Red Reserve parking and I have to say that the situation gets worse every year. The more jerks that you put out there holding yellow ribbon, the more difficult it becomes to park and set up a good tailgate. What ever happen to the days of 2 guys holding glow wands like you see on runways at the airports.

    Cassel was awesome!

by amygirl on 9/21/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Had a great time at the game yesterday. This is the second year in a row that my husband and I have gone to watch the Chiefs and Raiders at Arrowhead. Although I was cheering for the Chiefs and more specifically, MATT CASSEL, I have to admit that I was also there to watch D Mac as he is from Arkansas and I used to watch him play for the Hogs.

    Chiefs L-O-N-G Season

by RAHGo on 9/21/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Chiefs had the stats and the opportunties, but could not pull out the win. They have a tough schedule, but I have confidence we are going to win a few games. Whether the Chiefs win or lose, we always have a GREAT time with friends and other fans tailgating in the Chiefs parking lot. Go Chiefs!

    Arrowhead (Houston v. KC)

by TDE67 on 8/17/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

It is too early to tell whether there is marked improvement on this team but there were definate bright spots. The crowd went crazy on the Chief's first sack. It was definately a preseason game. The crowd was not spectacular but moderate in size. Rain made the fans clear out rather quickly. But it was still an enjoyable game. Inside Arrowhead was amazing. Concourses are much wider and more conducive to movement. Restraunts are updated. Bathrooms larger. The only issue was the new construction which did restrict some movement around the stadium.

    Starters must improve a bunch.

by WildWilliam on 8/16/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

The Chiefs have to work hard to show improvement. A lot of the team is new but they reminded me of last year.
