This is the fourth Josh Ritter concert I've attended. I've been to two at the Showbox in Seattle, and one in Vancouver, B.C. (the Commodore Ballroom?). The other ones were great, but I think this one was probably the best. He's recently released a new album, and I was a little concerned he'd play only songs from that album, but he played only five or so; the rest were great songs from previous albums. The execution was perfect; the songs were pretty much exactly how I'd imagine the order to go: a great song to start, some softer ones mixed with more rock-ish songs in the middle, über-high energy ones for the finale, and some calmer stuff for the encore. It was fairly warm in the venue, but they had air conditioning, and the temperature was fine, considering it was standing room only (closer to the stage) and the show was sold out. Because it was all ages, there was this weird diagonal partition going across part of the room to separate the under-21 group from the over-21 group. It was kind of lame for the unders, because they weren't able to get as close to the stage. I was about six or seven feet away. The opening act, Dawes, was okay, but I came to see Josh Ritter, and was not disappointed in the slightest. I've got a bit of a headache and I'm probably a little deafer, but I'm young, and it was definitely worth it. If you enjoy music, you need to see a Josh Ritter concert.

  • Josh Ritter: zzzzz; Carolina Chocolate Drops-Yeah!

by JezmundBZerker on 6/25/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

The opening act, Carolina Chocolate Drops, were a very exciting and original three piece bluegrass band--in an old timey way. I was so pumped after hearing them play that I couldn't bear to last more than three songs through Josh Ritter's predictable and (to my taste) boring repertoire.

  • Josh Ritter is incredible

by rojojo on 6/25/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

A truly amazing show - very well one of the top 5 shows I have ever seen! This is the fourth time I've seen Josh Ritter - the first being a solo/acoustic show at the El Rey in LA which got me hooked on him and his music (we went to the show on a whim). Every show has been progressively better than the previous. This was the best so far. Josh and the royal city band were in top form. They sounded amazing, had wonderful stage presence and played every song I love. We were also blown away by a wonderful surprise - Joan Baez! She sang a lovely duet with Josh and then read the poem annabelle lee. The show ended with the entire fillmore joining together to sing "wait for love". I am so happy to have experienced this show.

I already knew to expect his lyrical proficancy and musicality, but this was the most energized show I've ever seen, way more than his YouTube videos. The Royal City Band was absolutely inspired as well. If you care about Josh Ritter at all, you should see him now, because he is having his 'Dylan goes electric' moment that is taking everything to the next level. Also a huge shout out to the opener, The Carolina Chocolate Drops who were alone were worth the price of admission. First opening band I've ever seen to get an encore!

  • Amazing, amazing show

by Devinoch on 6/25/10The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Josh Ritter before (at the Great American Music Hall) but this was hands down one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen at The Fillmore in a long, long time. A great selection of songs, an incredible amount of energy, a phenomenal sound and just a great chemistry with the audience. Also the opening band, Carolina Chocolate Drops, got an encore, which I haven't seen in a long time. Plus, y'know, a guest appearance by Joan Baez didn't hurt either. Josh said it was a "great, great night" for him, and it was for us too. Thanks again for an amazing show!

He tore the house down. Really special night, esp when Joan Baez showed up. Buying his albums today. Great!

  • Perfect Night With Josh Ritter

by IchabodCraneSH on 6/24/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Perfect show! The Music Box is an awesome site, the openers--the Carolina Chocolate Drops--were excellent... and Josh Ritter, the best writer today, put on a flawless show. I really could not have asked for a better evening.

  • Josh Ritter = Simply Amazing

    by balticon7 on 6/24/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. ( and I've seen quite a few) He started the concert off with a bang with "Change of Time." Throughout the set he played new songs such as "Lark," "Lantern," and "Another New World," while still remaining true to the old favorites of "Kathleen," "Right Moves," "Harrisburg," and "Good Man." Josh even played a couple songs by himself to make for a more intimate setting. It was spectacular! Go see him whenever you get the chance.

  • Another Amazing Josh Ritter show

    by 5starsallaround on 6/24/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Josh Ritter was amazing as always - he just loves to play and entertain and it shows. The newly renovated Music Box was beautiful. And the staff was so wonderful in accomodating our party which included my handicapped girlfriend. This is the 2nd time in the year that we've been to the Music Box since she has been in a wheelchair and both times we've been so impressed and grateful by their incredible service. So 5 stars for the Music box and 5 stars for Josh Ritter and his incredible band!! We never miss a show. And no, we're not from Idaho either.

  • One of the best shows of the year

    by Bugman60 on 6/24/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

It's refreshing to see an artist that shows tremendous appreciation for his audience and is having as good a time performing as the we are listening. Josh Ritter was incredible at the Music Box on Wednesday night. He played songs from all of his albums but focused a lot of the show on his latest "So Runs the World Away" which isn't a bad thing! The audience was having a great time singing along to the familiar songs. This is a great venue for seeing an artist such as Josh--great sound, very intimate.

  • Wonderful Storytelling

    by MAF1 on 6/24/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I thought that this concert was great. Loved the opening band. Different sound. Josh Ritter was unique. Great storyteller in song. He played with joyful gratefulness. It made me smile. Loved the variety of slow ballads with rock songs.

  • Opening act was way better

    by moby1851 on 6/24/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The opening act, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, were the highlight of this concert. They were powerful, soulful, charismatic—they actually got an LA crowd to clap and move to just about every song! It was a shame that they weren't on ANY of the billing on the Fonda's building, its website, nothing. You had to know from CCD's website that they were even going to be there, and they still just about brought the house down with songs like "Genuine Negro Jig" and "Hit 'em Up Style." Josh Ritter came on in a flourish of electric-guitar distortion, then quickly settled into a quiet, meandering song filled with finger-picking guitar and over-the-top electronic drum effects. He smiled like crazy, and said he was glad to be there, but that was about it. The second song was almost as boring as the first (though I can manage to remember its title, "Southern Pacific"). My sister and I left as the third song started—and a standing crowd just kept, well, standing. The contrast between the two bands was painful. I will now go out of my way to see the Chocolate Drops again, and will make a point of never seeing Josh Ritter live again.
