Probably one of the best shows I've been to. There were several times that I had goose bumps merely from the energy that Josh and the band exuded.
The opening act Punch Brothers were fantastic in their songs, virtuosity, how well they played, and how interesting their songs were. They set the bar so high that the headliner Josh Ritter, seriously paled in comparison. What was with those light bulbs on stage? Because of the excellence of the Punch Brothers, Josh Ritter's stuff seemed like all mid-tempo pablum, like a third rate bar band, like intermediate students following masters. Ritter seemed entirely average in comparison to the unique and masterful Punch Brothers.
My Husband and 9yo son took Amtrak from Boston to NY to see this show and oh wow was it worth it. I confess. I had never heard of Josh Ritter before this show. I like India Arie, Pink, John Legend, Elvis Costello + lots others...but mostly hafta have soul and a groove. You could tell that Josh was so thrilled to be there. Acted like a happy little kid all night...genuine happiness. And his songs were brilliant. Oh yea, actor Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) was brought out on stage before “Another New World” for a mesmerizing reading of Poe’s tragic poem, “Annabel Lee.” Stunning. . Also, the song "In The Dark" was magical. Acoustic, singing next to the mike...lights pretty much off...singing gently and the crowd singing gently back...unplanned-and wow Band was tight. They were all fun too. Piano-gorgeous! All the Lead guitar was really special. The drums were very interesting(2 or 3 times there were two other guys with drumsticks helping the drummer out)...and the bassist was fantastic. Playing all kindsa instruments that made very cool sounds. Just a special show that I will always remember.
Josh Ritter brought such joyful energy to the Town Hall stage last night. I was thrilled to be in my favorite front row loge seat for the performance, but the house at Town Hall really has no bad seats. The audience had a mix of devotees and new converts, and it seemed everyone was really happy with the show. Josh played a wide range of material from his early albums, including fan favorites "Kathleen", "Wolves", "Girl in the War", "Snow is Gone/Hello Starling", and many tunes from his recent release. The audience was up and dancing for several rockers, like "The Music's Never Loud Enough". Josh has such wonderful rapport with his audience. He has so much respect for the performance and love for his work. I had such a good time that I decided to go Saturday night to Music Hall of Williamsburgh to hear him again!
The entire band was so enthusiastic. They all looked like they were having so much fun. This positive attitude carried over to the audience to create a great atmosphere. Awesome music.
The concert last night really could not have been more incredible. He opened with Change Of Time off his new album and it just went up hill from there. He was interactive and funny with the crowd, and the music was just, Josh Ritter. His normal, wonderful self. I could not have asked for anything more out of the evening. If you haven't already, go see this magic man at work, it's incredible.
For the second time that I attended a Josh Ritter concert, everything was ramped up: A bigger venue, a sold-out crowd and more great songs to listen to. The whole evening was his. He sometimes stepped out from behind the mike to serenade us, and we were all rapt. A great evening.
This was a terrific show! Josh and the band played many favorites with a few new songs. He continues to be the happiest man alive when he is on stage and his voice sounded better than ever. He got everyone on their feet rocking to the music.
I've been listening to the latest Josh Ritter record since it came out in early May. With each listen my appreciation grew but it's not until you see him perform these songs live that you really get where he's coming from. He puts emotion and depth into his songs during their live performance that you just can't match in a studio performance. At his show last night he played nearly every song on the new record and mixed in a pretty steady collection of songs from past recordings, recent and dating back several years. Kathleen, Snow is Gone, Harrisburg were all well represented. The audience was a bit on the older side and that might be a problem down the road if he doesn't start appealing to folks that aren't close to collecting social security. I took my 15 year old son, who had a great time. I've seen him three times in the past year and as the title character in Beetlejuse said about the Exorcist, it gets better ever time I see him. He just really seems to enjoy what he's doing.
Josh Ritter is a fantastic musician. His performances just keep getting stronger and stronger
Josh and his band were amazing per usual; their music makes you feel alive, ready to go out and conquer the world!
SO amazing. Josh and the band have a lot of energy which is infectious...in a good way.
Josh Ritter's performances always feel like someone just wanting to play music with you. What an amazing experience.
I just moved to NYC last week from San Francisco. I had tickets for Josh's Fillmore show in June, but I live here now and I wanted to see him in the town he resides. What I saw last night was the most amazingly earnest, artful performance I've ever seen. His smile, his voice, his lyrics, his band, and his enthusiasm for being at Town Hall in front of one of the most awesome crowds I've ever seen was a gift to be a part of. All I can say is thank you. I felt like I was part of something very special. And, I'll see him again in a month and I can't wait.
Ritter is amazing. Songwriting alone, he's worth the ticket price. But, he and the band put on an amazing show and their energy is contagious. I can't wait to see him again.
Last year in NYC, Josh was the one that rocked himself a little harder. Anyone remember the day he made the sun come out, when all we had is rain? This year at Town Hall, he lit up the stage in every sense of the word. Josh is so much bigger, he lights up my world. All the best to Josh, and lots of love to his band, his awesome street team, and my fellow fans!!
Josh was, once again, something to remember! I'm constantly amazed at how much joy this guy shows as he's performing. It's so refreshing to see a singer/songwriter do his thing with so little pretense involved. A wonderful night of music. Town Hall is a special venue in itself.
I saw Josh for the first time at Radio City opening for the Swell Season and was left wanting more after his short set. I immediately bought tickets for this gig and was not disappointed. The smaller venue was a real treat as anyone in close proximity to this humble, genuinely happy, gifted singer/song writer cannot help but be affected! Aside from beautiful lyrics, wonderful vocals and a witty, charismatic band who feed off each other and the audience, what stood out to me was the positive energy that radiated from the stage. Josh has a childlike innocence and enthusiasm about him which is infectious, he is pure joy. He wore a huge smile for the whole set and you can't help but smile right back. I can’t wait to see him again; this evening was food for the soul.
I had already loved Josh's songs for years before I got to go to his concert, but now I do not exaggerate when I say that he is by far my favorite musician. His voice is lovely, his set fun, and his enthusiasm for the music overwhelming and infectious. I would recommend his music and his concerts to anyone and everyone!
