  • Ensemble Great/Stars Not so great

Great dancing and singing by the ensemble. Unfortunately the two leads couldn't carry the show.

Joseph and .... was wonderful - high energy - so much talent! Our family (13 yrs. - 84 yrs.) went together and all of us loved it! The facility is beautiful and DPAC staff were very professional, friendly, and helpful.

I could not wait to see Diana DeGarmo again after seeing her and hearing her beautiful voice in NERDS. Plus I would now see both her and her gorgeous husband Ace Young who I supported on American Idol in 2006. I got awesome seats for my two friends and me. Joseph blew me away! The songs were different, lively, and funny! I did not want it to end! My two friends who were brought up in extremely strict religious homes loved how the bible story was portrayed. After the show we were graciously met by Diana and Ace who took pictures with us! Diana DeGarmo's song, Good Goodbye, co-written with her husband Ace Young, is one I had on repeat for a month when I first heard her sing it on The Young and the Restless. Please, just go see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! It was an experience I will never forget. It was magic!!!!

I thought the majority of the show was wonderful. I was disgusted with the bed scene because it was completely inaccurately portrayed. That is not what happened in the scriptures. Disappointed that it had so be added that way - just to seem exciting to some people.

  • Great Entertainment!

This was a wonderfuly contemporary treatment of a familiar Biblical story. Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young played their parts well and the remainder of the cast were equally brilliant.

  • Less abs, more diaphragm

by CheekyChicky900 on 5/20/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

I've seen Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat before and loved it. This production falls down on so many levels, it's a disappointment. Casting Ace Young and Diana Degarmo were huge mistakes. Yes, they have name recognition, but they don't have theater singing voices or acting chops. Ms. Degarmo's voice wasn't warmed up for the first act so she was croaking it out. She was better in the second act, but still not hitting the songs well. Her voice wasn't strong enough and she didn't really tell the story with her singing, which is her job as Narrator. Ace Young, wow, so miscast. Instead of singing with emotion and really belting out some songs he faded into whimpers. I literally could not hear him for a good part of the show and was disappointed when he would trail off on lyrics instead of singing his heart out. He doesn't have a theater voice. He can't project and he plays Joseph like someone in a junior high production. Mr. Young needs to work less on his abs and work more on his diaphragm if he's going to "star" in the touring company of a Broadway show. Most of the rest of the cast did a great job and many of them would have been better in the lead. Choreography was ok with very little in the way of high energy or athletic dance numbers. It's like someone forgot this was a musical with dancing when they cast and choreographed it. There were some unique twists with the brothers using plates ala "Stomp" but that was about it. The costumes were dreary, including Joseph's coat. It's pretty bad when even the coat is disappointing. The show was a mess. I'll just listen to my soundtrack from years ago and try to forget this horrible rendition.

Just Outstanding. A good play for all age groups. The music and singing is constant and the only downside for the play is that it ends too soon. Time goes by so quickly with all the activity on the stage and the the music.

  • Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor was amazing!

This was one of the best musicals I have been to. The actors were so good in their parts. Loved the different genres.

  • Dreaming in Technicolor

by MusicalTheatreNerd on 5/20/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Joseph with Ace Young and Diana Degarmo was outstanding! I knew it was going to be a great production, but was blown away by the effortless performance put on by these amazing actors. When the brothers performed Those Canaan Days, it made me fall in love with theatre all over again. That song was one of the best numbers performed ever at the DPAC. This show was amazing...no pun intended.

This version of Joseph left a lot to be desired from previous versions. Visually, much of it seemed chaotic and the dancing was sloppy. At times, changes to the original show seemed to just make it more silly rather than enhance the story.

Excellent show. Lively and refreshing. Narrator and ensemble were outstanding.

  • Very good

by Gerry526 on 5/19/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the musical was very well choreographed but think the main characters voices were an octave to high. I also thought some of the singers who used hand-held microphones should have used the no-hands version as moving around with a lot of hand movement seemed to be cumbersome at times.

  • Joseph at DPAC

Although we missed the use of a "Rainbow Chorus", we enjoyed the staging and execution of the play. I was impressed with the graphics and lighting that was used throughout! My wife enjoyed the performance, but preferred the way the original productions were staged!

  • Joseph or Disney's Aladdin?

by wintergal123 on 5/19/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

Went to this show, knowing the story and the music. Brought a friend too. The ensemble I felt was very good, the group numbers in song and dance were exciting and fun to watch. (ex: Those Caanan Days). However, the person that was cast as Joseph (Ace Young from American Idol) was a huge disappointment. He made it feel very "Disney." My guest and I were expecting a more robust and mature sound. We were hopeful that as the show progressed it would get better...but he unfortunately continued to disappoint. Not good.

  • Sound was off, but not a bad performance

The show was okay, but the music volume was a little muted.
