Out of all the musicals I've seen I have to say this one was kind of corny. The singing was only average and there was nothing particularly spectacular.
The Pharoah, aka Elvis, rocked the house in this musical where every song is a skit and you have to restrain yourself from singing along, out loud. One major drawback: Joseph was a hunk, but had a terrible, screechy voice. I never thought I would miss Donny Osmond. The bright lines of American Idol influences casting decisions, as opposed to performers who can actually sing?
Costars were ill-suited for a badly contrived remake of Joseph. Digarmo's voice was painfully shrieking and supporting cast members were much better than Ace Young whose role seems to be reduced to flexing his abs. It was more reminiscent of a 70's variety show than a show that told the beautiful story of Joseph. The focus was more on dance moves than on the vocal aspects and frankly, the songs were forgettable as performed by Digarmo and Young. About as entertaining as flipping through channels and occasionally finding something to watch halfway before switching again.
Being a minister I was tentative about seeing this but it was alleviated immediately. Dianna DeGarmo has an amazing voice even though there were problems with her mic in the beginning of the show. Ace did a great job as Joseph and the show was very good. I would recommend this to families on one condition...your children can sit quiet and behaved for the entire show...if not....get a baby sitter for your kids and come and enjoy
This score has a special meaning to the three of us who came to see Joseph. I've seen this at a local high school and at a community playhouse in Pasadena. This performance ranked number three of the three. Sorry to say, the leads just didn't work for me. The performance had it's high points. The music is wonderful and our seats were great. But I hold a professional performance to a high standard and Ace's and Diana's voices in those roles just didn't' meet it. I will give kudos to the cast as a whole. It's apparent they were giving it their all. Many of the supporting roles were well cast and held the show together.
Incredible talent and so much fun! I smiled the entire show. Ace and Diana are outstanding.
I enjoyed taking my daughter to see Joseph as a surprise. She grew up watching this on film with Donny Osmond as Joseph and we both truly loved the production!
It was ok but nit worth the travel. The play was a mockery of what Joseph actually suffered.
The colors, the music, the show... all a treat. I can't say it's the best show but it is entertaining. Ace young delivers a bright and energetic performance. And so does his wife Diana. She's a doll. Super cute. My favorite scene is the dinner scene with all the brothers and they do this plate slamming number... pretty fun. Overall a good show. :)
Enjoyable entertainment.. Had its humorous moments.. Production was simple...
Fun and energetic! We didn't want it to end. The cast are true professionals and made this an unforgettable performance!
I was in the west end production back in the 90's so naturally I was a bit apprehensive going to see it 20 years later but I was not disappointed. They took out one of the songs and clearly updated the wardrobe and the stage props but that aside it was a great performance it took me back to my days at the London palladium
Seeing it from a perspective of knowing the true Biblical account, it was interested to see the twist they did on the story. Despite the changes, it was somewhat entertaining and the music was definitely fun to listen to. I was glad too that it is a family safe production with a few parts containing sexual innuendos.
I have seen Joseph several times. This time was AWFUL. The choreography was so bad it seemed as if the actors were making up steps as they went. The director added poorly thought out and horribly executed "modern" elements. The children's choir, a high point of any Joseph production was left out entirely. The costumes were crummy and while in ancient clothing, many cast members wore sneakers. Even the Elvis was weak, and poorly costumed. The leads I could have forgiven for not really having the singing chops for their parts if only the rest of the show had been any good. I was surprised at how very empty the Pantages was until 3 minutes into the show, then I realized the word must have gotten out about how bad the show was. If it had been a movie I would have walked out and demanded my money back.
This is my favorite musical. This is the 3rd production I've seen. I loved it . I really liked the use of the technical graphics. Not over done but added to the show at appropriate times. Diana was great. I thought her voice was great and was able to carry the show unlike a few other comments from some of the other areas. She is beautiful and adorable. I will honestly say that Ace ' s voice was strange. He's good when he's belting something out but singing it sounded nasal and strange. But I was still able to enjoy the whole production. He definitely looked the part. I did see him after the show and he was the nicest guy though. The rest of the cast was also very talented. I thoroughly enjoyed myself as did my mom. These were tickets I got her for her mother's day present.
The play was good. However I had seen it about 10 years ago and it was very different from what I recall. Last time I felt like I was much more into the music than I was this time so my expectations were higher. My wife however did enjoy it. She was not with me last time :)
Wasn't that great, found the projected images to be rather cheesy, and the projector was shaking through the whole performance so it was very irritating and distracting. Found Diana DeGacamo to be more awkward and out of place vs standing out. She was over acting and trying too hard, regardless of her beautiful voice.
This production is perfectly suited to the Pantages. A fun evening with extremely talented dancers in the ensemble. Staging, lighting, were unbelievable. It's not often you hear gasps of appreciation from the audience.
I saw the very first Joseph show in London in 1072 - and have seen many more performances since. It is one of my absolute favorites. This one was the most disappointing altogether. The narrator was dreadful - she screamed, didn't sing. Other voices were mediocre and the best number in the show was 'Those Canaan Days' with Simeon in the lead. I am a set designer and thought the sets were also disappointing- as were the costumes (Especially the coat of many colors!) and the lack of makeup. It has been modernized to it's detriment. So, I am sad to give this show a thumbs down.
