Not What We Expected!
by topoolwife on 6/23/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5After having seen "Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" many years ago at the Pantages Theatre we were excited to see it again. I think it was Michael Damien who starred in it the first time we saw it. It was by far superb to this production. The first one we saw had children sitting on steps on each side of the stage singing at the beginning and then later. It did not have the actors in "modern day" at the beginning and the end of the play. The actor that played the "Pharoah" did much more Elvis style in actually wearing Blue Suede shoes while singing that song, Blue Suede Shoes and he came down out of the audience and surprised a lady in the first row by jumping on the arms of her chair. It was all very exciting. This production was definitely filled with energy but it was TOTALLY wrong in depicting that Joseph got put in jail for sleeping with the Potiphar's wife. He did not sleep with her in the Bible. He escaped her and left behind his jacket which she lied and said he was with her. This rendition was very confusing to children in the audience in that it did not follow the Bible. I do want to say that Diana DeGarmo was outstanding in her acting and singing. I was disappointed to see that Joseph was depicted in kind of a "gay" like character. Ace Young is not gay being married to Diama DeGarmo in real life. Why was he talking and singing in a "gay" tone? What a bad depiction again for the children in the audience and there were a lot.
