  • Not What We Expected!

by topoolwife on 6/23/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

After having seen "Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" many years ago at the Pantages Theatre we were excited to see it again. I think it was Michael Damien who starred in it the first time we saw it. It was by far superb to this production. The first one we saw had children sitting on steps on each side of the stage singing at the beginning and then later. It did not have the actors in "modern day" at the beginning and the end of the play. The actor that played the "Pharoah" did much more Elvis style in actually wearing Blue Suede shoes while singing that song, Blue Suede Shoes and he came down out of the audience and surprised a lady in the first row by jumping on the arms of her chair. It was all very exciting. This production was definitely filled with energy but it was TOTALLY wrong in depicting that Joseph got put in jail for sleeping with the Potiphar's wife. He did not sleep with her in the Bible. He escaped her and left behind his jacket which she lied and said he was with her. This rendition was very confusing to children in the audience in that it did not follow the Bible. I do want to say that Diana DeGarmo was outstanding in her acting and singing. I was disappointed to see that Joseph was depicted in kind of a "gay" like character. Ace Young is not gay being married to Diama DeGarmo in real life. Why was he talking and singing in a "gay" tone? What a bad depiction again for the children in the audience and there were a lot.

The play was really enjoyable. There was no boring scene. Each scene was really entertaining.

Story was all over. Not one solid Moral to the story. Songs did'nt flow. Too forced.

  • Charmless "Joseph" at Pantages

by Haddleburg on 6/23/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

To paraphrase an old line, this touring production did to Webber what Hitler did to Poland. They took all the charm out of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and put in a lot of unnecessary sound. It was loud -- stupid loud, like a bad rock show or something on a Tuesday in Las Vegas. All in all, a dreadful evening.

Overall the performance was entertaining, but it felt like it was too long. The narrator was difficult to clearly understand when she was singing so she seemed unnecessary much of the time. The best parts were those of the 11 brothers with their energy and charisma! They had the best songs and were the most entertaining. It's difficult to recommend but if tickets are a good price then I could suggest going for fun.

What a wonderful time I had watching this talented cast perform a very wholesome story! I am still smiling a week later. The lady that went with me said she hadn't had this much fun in a long time; can only agree, I had a great time! I'd do it all over again.

  • Diana DeGarmo was remarkable.

by Trescaliboy on 6/22/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great! Diana was the best Narrator I've heard. There were several other standout performers- notably Simeon and Rueben. So enjoyable we went back the next night before they left town.

It was a great show, the narrator wasn't my favorite. I also sat next to a very hyper child that was disruptive.

  • Dreamcoat was wonderful!

This is my absolute favorite musical, and I really liked this production, and the friends I got to go with me loved it too.

  • So Disappointed! :(

by DisappointedJosephFan on 6/21/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

As a long time fan of this show, who's seen it many times, I was SO excited it was coming back to the Pantages Theater! I bought my tickets far in advance and counted down the days. I'm not an Idol watcher so I didn't really know who the two leads were, but from their first song, I was so DISAPPOINTED! I did not enjoy their voices....at all! I hated the little changes they made to the songs. Where were all the fabulous sets that other productions have created?? This was just one long computer generated show on big curtains!! Images of fish swimming in the ocean onto the dancers' robes during the songs was just ..... DUMB! They tried to make it hip, I suppose, but in my opinion, they just ruined a great show!

  • Beautiful!

by Jeovanna on 6/21/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I absolutely loved this play! Got the tickets for my mom's birthday and she loved it so much as well! The singing, dancing, costumes, scenes- everything was just BEAUTIFUL. This play also has some funny scenes that both my mom and I (19 years old) found funny!

  • EXCELLENT MUSICAL

    by Beachgirl90272 on 6/21/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

We had brought tickets not knowing what this musical was about. We were excited that it was amazing! We have told all our friends that they should treat themselves and see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat if it comes to their city. Seeing it at the Pantages Theatre was a bonus, it is such a beautiful theatre.

"Joseph" was not a strong presence on the stage. You first see this very masculine figure appear but then his voice is rather cartoonish. His acting was not bad -- it was just the voice didn't suit the part. He did well in the prison scene (vocally) because it was soft and sad. He would, I'm sure, come off much better in a different production.
