It was ok. The two leads had weak voices. I like the brothers the best.

Better than expected! Then only critique would be that the narrators voice was not as full as I had imagined. But still a great performance!

  • Ace and Diana Didn't Stack Up!

    by Celebr8tion on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Sadly, Ace and Diana's voices just didn't compare to previous performers such as the infamous Donny Osmond. Ace's voice doesn't possess the texture and quality needed to portray the lead character in this musical. Diana was very nasally and often sounded like she was screaming to hit the higher notes. On the positive side, the rest of the cast was exceptional especially the one who played Pharaoh. It is sad when the ensemble cast outshines the leads.

  • Joseph was amazing!

by Simego on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Disclosure: I love great musicals, and I have always loved Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat -- any version. Still, this new production was even better than I expected, and I would recommend this play to anyone who doesn't absolutely hate musicals. For novices: this play is bright, light, cheerful, airy, colorful, engaging, upbeat, catchy, modern, pretty. It's a great play to bring children -- especially if you want them to "like" theater. For everyone: This version of Joseph is modern. The words/music of course are the same. But the design, the set, the pace, the dancing, the costumes, the overall vision, is modernized to make it more like a current hip new concept. The beauty, of course, is that the story/lyrics are not a new concept. The story is timelessly appealing. So a timelessly appealing storyline with a new aesthetic has the potential to be the best of both worlds. And it was. The star, Diana (the narrator) is just an unbelievable talent. Her voice is beyond amazing. She also articulates so well, newcomers to the lyrics will actually be able to understand the words. The lead, Ace (Joseph) is, ummm, well pretty beautiful to behold (the show seems to really emphasize male beauty, wow!) He has a beautiful voice (especially his tone) but not the voice strength of the narrator. He makes up for this mild deficiency with charm, charisma, poise, beauty and a smile that could light up the Xmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The Pharaoh was fantastic fun. The brothers had a show-stealing scene (meal) that was entirely new, longer and incredibly fun/delightful and much appreciated to have found a way to put something brand new in the show. There are other new/elongated dance/music moments in the musical. The costumes and overall aesthetic vision was extremely creative and innovative and different from any other Joseph to date.

Never thought a biblical story can be so much fun and entertaining, will definitely see it again.

  • Joseph was Amazing

by Rizma on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I love this musical - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Great music, lots of clever and very humorous lyrics, imaginative story line based on biblical story. Fantastic. The dancing they have added, and some modernizing from the original Broadway production which I saw in 1981, is great. However I must say that it was disappointing that much of the lyrics were not understandable. There are now personal microphones - which there were not in 1981 - and still I could not hear about half the lyrics - priceless lyrics I WANTED to hear again. It is a major part of the value of this show. So that was disappointing. Sometimes the music overshadowed the lyrics, but some singers - like the baker and butler and others - could be heard clearly. Unfortunately, the narrator and Joseph, about half the time - you missed what they were singing. Unfortunate. STILL a fantastic show - and I would recommend it despite missing a lot of the priceless lyrics.

  • Jo's Dream Coat

by Tenorino on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

As expected, good performances from the pro broadway supporting cast. The two "Idol" leads were disappointments but not surprising. Digarmo has a powerful voice but has no flexibility or nuance. She's totally lost her soft chest voice from obvious vocal abuse and her head voice was no where in sight. She just yelled everything in a thin shriek and many around me could not understand her. In contrast, true broadway performer Kelly Rabke from way back in the '92 touring cast was superior in every way in the role. Ace Young was just bad. I wanted to like him (I used to be his landlord) but he had no presence, charisma, acting was mediocre and lacked passion and his singing was surprisingly bad. He sang through clenched teeth with a thin small voice and put forth zero emotional content. Again the vocal differences with the good tenors who sang supporting roles was apparent. Not good theater when the lead did not have his technicolor coat on and just mimed it by touching himself. Had to be a miscue. The brothers scene with the table and percussion work with the dinnerware was great. Pharaoh/Elvis was strong vocally but up close, seemed wooden and lacked true joy and charisma in his acting. The continue to cast leads with some "star" power I guess but we usually end up with pop singers who do not have the depth of vocal talent or training to live up to the hype or roles they are given.

  • Best "Joseph" ever!!!

by StryderTK on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Non-stop energy and fun that just kept building and building from start to finish. Great performers that do it all - sing, dance, act - and make it look easy. Didn't want it to end!

  • Joseph was less than technicolor

    by 1443779 on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

The singing is strong and the dancing was fine but the production overall lacked the magic of prior productions. It really felt like a staging that could be accomplished by a high school or college company. For that reason I was disappointed.

  • Joseph

I took my 9-year-old granddaughter who enjoyed it very much. I had seen the play a number of years ago and I remember it as being much more exciting and fun than this performance.

  • Go Go Go Joseph

by Emtnet on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyable performance. Mostly young cast. Good to see my favorite show passed on to future generations! Suffered with unruly kids behind us. Would be difficult to restrict bringing kids to the show, since the original was written for children. There were many well behaved kids who enjoyed the show. Parents should know their own kids and use discretion on whether to bring them to live theater. Enjoyed meeting cast members afterward!

Amazing! Fun from beginning to end! Such talent! I would see it again!

  • Ridiculous Concept

by FeifferFlower on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

Confused mixed media nonsense. Show is shameless bid for constant applause. "... A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing" . A very sad perversion of a biblical story and I am not even religious.

There are no words to adequately describe it . While there were some moments that were good overall it was a huge disappointment. Save your money.

  • Unimpressive

by markkimlaw on 6/24/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

The sets were very unimpressive and the lead singers were just so so. The lead female was not charasmatic and the actor who played Joseph had a very unusual voice.

  • Lots of Fun

Not at all what I expected. A little slow in the middle, but overall a great way to spend the afternoon.

Felt the production was heavy on the MTV-type multimedia spectacle and light on heart, which is of most importance to me. I love the show and have seen it many times. This was the first time I felt nothing... but dizzy from all the moving projections. With much respect for the performers who were just doing what they were asked to do. Just didn't like this one. Sorry.
