  • Wonderful production!

by mandyjm on 6/29/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best production of Joseph that I have ever seen. The entire cast was great- the Narrator and the cast of Brothers were particularly amazing! It was a fantastic night of entertainment!

  • What a dream!!

by Extraveler43 on 6/29/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This show aptly has "amazing" in its title! We left the theater uplifted, happy, energized and elated. The songs are electrifying and I still have the tunes in my head! The cast was having such a good time, so much fun, and their mood was definitely transferred to the audience!

  • Great Play, wish i had a better seat

by ichmel on 6/29/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I have seen the movie version of this play before and this cast did a great job. Diana DeGarmo has a very powerful voice as the narrator. And Ace is an extremely ripped Joseph, but it was hard to see his facial expressions from where I was sitting (middle mezzanine). Little disappointed with some of Joseph's brothers as soloists; not very impressive, but the tin plate skit they did was cool. Look to Joseph's father for comic relief. What a ham! What's amazing is that the visual effects (projection of moving background images) are almost on par with Las Vegas Cirque-Zarkana. That was pretty amazing to see in a traveling show.

  • Too wild

by Totsieirene on 6/29/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

The production was so wild, loud, and frenetic that many of the clever lines were lost...

  • Not a very good rendition

by BillyElliotReviewer on 6/29/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

I've seen Joseph several times. This production is a very traditional rendition. Outside of the very first number, it failed to pull in any modern amenities. I guess maybe the Pharoah as Elvis was modern, but that's in every production. With this musical, you are suppose to incorporate modern aspects into the play, but they failed in this. The voices of the singers were very weak. The orchestra often overpowered the singing. This is especially noticeable in the San Diego Civic Theatre which does not have a great sound system to begin with. I know the words to every song in Joseph, and I still couldn't understand a thing Pharoah sang. Had I not known the words to this musical, I would have been completely lost. What was that finale? No one had any idea when to applaud. The one bright spot: Those Canan Days, sung by the brothers. I should note that one of the Joseph productions I have seen is the one with Donny Osmond. That was unbelievable and may now color my interpretation of other productions.

  • Joseph & his HIGH ENERGY Dreamcast!

by ShrinkG on 6/29/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I caught the show in LA (thanks to Ellen's show giving out some tickets) and trotted down to SDiego to catch it a second time. The creative energy is awesome, and I left looking forward to getting home to 'work' on my own creative projects. Creative Energy breeds Creative Energy. This cast is great, thanks.

  • Awesome!

Great performance. Very entertaining and wonderfully done.

  • The Brothers Were Good

by BartyBert on 6/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

The brothers were fantastic. The highlight of the show. The production was really interesting - they took some chances with multimedia and I enjoyed the lighting. Unfortunately, "Joseph" rests with the two main characters - Joseph and the Narrator - and neither worked. She belted out every song at times when subtlety was needed; he sang well but couldn't seem to remember to act at the same time.

  • Joseph was great!

by Wickedfreak on 6/28/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

It was a very quick show but the music made it fun. The standout was Diana Degarmo. Her voice is amazing!!! While Ace a Young was good, his voice was very whiny and made some of the memorable songs...well, not. The brothers were hilarious and had several great songs. The Megamix was really fun. Overall, it was a fun show. A good night of entertainment.

  • Fantastic

  • Joseph Edited

by sd8557 on 6/27/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

If you've never seen "Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat" you'll be quite pleased with this production. But, if you've seen it before and wanted to revisit it again, you'll be a bit disappointed in this production. A key song, "Any Dream Will Do" has been cut out of the first act and only appears near the finale as a duet. Pharaoh, though still an Elvis impersonator, has been toned way down. It's still a pleasant production but not up to its previous versions.

  • Great Show at Pantages

by TNdL on 6/26/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Got to the show 10 mins before the show started, lots of parking for $20 around the area. Show was great, a little dissapointed with Ace Youngs voice but overall, the show was great.

  • disappointing

    by Josephfan999 on 6/26/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

"Joseph" is one of my all-time favorite musicals, and I was SO looking forward to seeing this production. I had seen it 20 years ago in LA and I also saw it on the West End in London. What a disappointment this time around. It was completely lacking in energy and the fun factor that the show is famous for did not exist. I was excited to see Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young in the lead roles, and I am so sad to report that they just did not deliver. Yes, they can sing, but there is a story to be told here, and I think they completely lost sight of that. It's not a concert. And the choreography--ugh! I can't believe the choreographer has actually won a Tony. It did not fit the music, was not energetic, and really tried to be something that this show is not. One of the absolute best parts of the show usually is the Mega Mix at the end. People usually can't contain themselves and can't stay in their seats. Not the case here. It was so blah. And it was so confusing, nobody knew when to applaud for the performers. It was just a bummer. I can't believe we shelled out close to $500 for 4 tickets. Wish we could get a refund.

  • Overall a fine rendition of this Classic musical

by MikeEK on 6/26/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

One of the best versions of "Those Canaan Days" I've seen! Narrator has a fine voice, full of range! The "Elvis" Pharaoh was more than up to this important character. Where did the opening use of "Any Dream Will Do" go? Missing also was the climatic ending of Joseph magically rising skyward. (This incarnation just has him climbing somewhat and standing!) The encore reprise was absent more than a few of the acrobatics of previous editions of this show. Finally, WHERE was the local children's choir that added SO MUCH to each and every other JOSEPH I've seen? Big omission!

  • joseph and the technicolor dream coat is awsome

Beautiful theater and the show was spectacular. Great cast! We really enjoyed the production and would see it again.

  • The original was so much better

    by luisa55 on 6/25/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

If you want a version that matches the Bible story, skip this production, church goers stay away. If you wanted your children to learn the Bible story, forget it. This is all glitz. Nice singing and dancing, if that is all you want. At times the loud music overpowered the lyrics, if I didn't already know the story I would have been lost. The music was too much from the point of view of an Orchestra, not the total variety I remembered from before. Willie Nelson would not have sung that country song, etc etc.
