  • Go Go Go Joseph

by CalGold on 9/10/14Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

This is my wife's favorite musical. The music & rhyming lyrics are so original & witty. This Bible story is very uplifting & emotionally satisfying. And the best part is that this story is true & has a happy ending. Joseph was a great man, favored by God. Why? Simply because he did what was right & kept the commandments of God. Only if more people today would follow Joseph's example, the world would be a much nicer place. This is the first time that my wife & I had seen the Broadway version of this musical. We've usually seen it at a small theatre in the round venue locally. So we were looking forward to seeing more elaborate costumes & sets. But to our disappointment, the Broadway version didn't really have any fancier costumes or sets. And these national performers did not blow us away with their singing, compared to our local performers. We certainly enjoyed this Broadway version of the show, but felt that it was just too much money for what we got. We'll stick with our local theatre in the round version next time.

It was an ok performance. The play is a bit out dated and not for most people's taste this day in age. However, the performances were very talented, but the musical just wasn't my taste.

I had a wonderful time at the play. I thought the actors played their parts well and was very impressed Diane's singing voice. I wish I would have had the time to go see it again before it left San Diego.

  • Totally enjoyable

This musical was totally enjoyable. Enjoyed every minute of it. Joseph and the narrator were awesome, and so was Pharaoh!

  • Joseph was pure fun!

Really entertaining musical, each act went by so fast, we were surprised when the house lights came up.

  • Wonderful, two thumbs up.

New updated version. Narrator and cast deserve standing ovations.... However main character that played Joseph might have had the looks but his voice doesn't capture the role. Sounds more like a 10 year old boy singing.

I always love this show but this really wasn't my favorite rendition of it. Can't really put my finger on what was wrong just didn't seem as good as other productions. Think maybe they jazzed it up a bit to much. I am very much a traditionalist.

  • Fun and memorable show.

Very entertaining and creative all the way around. Songs were fun, the sets were amazing and the cast sang and danced with incredible energy even though it was the last show.

  • Awesome Play But...

by 4REEE on 7/4/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Just saw the Sunday night finale at the San Diego Civic Theater (Jun-29). The only complaint I had is the Joseph/Potiphar's-wife scene. It was TERRIBLE! I've seen several versions of this play and in every version, Joseph is clearly framed by the wife. But in this version, it looked like he had a romp in the hay with the wife. Kinda difficult to feel sorry for a guy in prison for sleeping with someone else's wife. Dance Choreography = A Singing = A- Ability to Get Laughs Out of the Audience = A+ Entertainment = A- / B+ ( would've rated higher, but that Joseph / "Wife" scene was really unsettling ) * * *

  • Fantastic!

by Arikamarie on 7/4/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I went with my friend and 7 year old daughter to this musical, and was very impressed with the quality of the show. I'm not the biggest fan of Ace Young's voice in general, but he nailed this role, as did Diana DeGarmo and everyone else in the cast. We sat in the 5th row, and paying the extra money to sit up close was worth every penny. The expressions on the actor's faces were priceless and we had no problems hearing anyone or seeing any of the action. What I found really surprising was how the brothers almost stole the show. What a talented group of men! The songs they sing have never been my favorite, however, their performances of them turned out to be the ones I liked best to watch live. I would love to be able to see it again! In fact, I'm a little worried about catching it next time with another cast. This version was about 10,000 times better than the 1999 movie in my opinion, and nothing against Donny Osmond. :)

One of eh best productions of the "Joseph" Story. We saw a production in Norfolk, VA in 1985 that was short and to the point. No extra dancing and special effects. This production came close to the simple story line with fine singing and acting. The dance sequences were appropriate (although, to me, a little long). We recommended this production to family members who attended teh Sunday performance. They were very pleased with the show.

  • What an amazing performance!

  • VERY entertaining

by sanddunechick on 7/2/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Let me first start off by explaining the 4 stars. This is a bible story. There is only 1 mention of the bible. They have removed ALL mention of God, prayer, etc... for this reason it gets 4 stars. With that said, if you have never seen it before, you are in for a fun time. The story is about a father, Jacob, who has 12 sons. His favorite is Joseph-and it's obvious. The other 11 sons do not want to be Joseph's slaves so they decide to do something about it. The story focuses on Joseph's ups and downs with of course God's promises to him being fulfilled in the end. The cast was phenomenal. The singing, choreography and costumes were fun. I say fun because they wore converse & tennis shoes. The costumes were enough to tell what time frame it was set in, but also modern enough that I got a kick out of looking at their knee-high lace up, gold converse :) Pharaoh rocked the house and really got the crowd involved, which is always a plus in my book. The set was simple but also intriguing at the same time. I love to see how a few set pieces transform into many things during the course of the play. My parents (65ish) enjoyed the play immensely. I would highly recommend this play, but keep in mind that if you are expecting the "bible" version, you will be disappointed.

  • Joseph was disappointing

by LessEnchanted on 7/2/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 1 out of 5

A simple but wonderful musical overdone. The amazing technicolor dreamcoat not so amazing. The colors should have exploded off the coat. Lyrics to songs so important to story, very hard to understand. A little better quality to all the vocals necessary. I have seen this musical before performed by the Lamb's Players and it was superior to this.

  • Excellent!

Joseph is always a great play to see and this particular production was excellent. I enjoyed the set and use of imagery as well as the singing and characters. I would recommend to anyone who wants to be thoroughly entertained!

The singing and choreography were extraordinary, the script was innovative and creative, and the staging/lights/costuming/use of technology were breathtaking. The action packed rendition of the Story of Joseph was memorable and rousing. AWESOME!
