  • Joseph was very forgettable

    by Choocher48 on 11/16/14Rochester Auditorium Theatre - RochesterRating: 1 out of 5

After seeing this twice with Donnie Osmand this production was a big disappointment. The narrator was annoying and interfered with the play. Why anyone thought the ambiguous bed scene was necessary is beyond me. In short the attorney to update this play failed miserably.

Very disappointed in the performance the lead singers were not up to par.

  • Overall, was a good show

by mktgdiva on 11/15/14Rochester Auditorium Theatre - RochesterRating: 3 out of 5

The Broadway-style cast was awesome, but Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo don't belong on the stage. Their voices are really not suited well for this show. I almost burst out laughing when he started singing. Very nasal thin tone.

  • Updated version of Joseph

by TootyLee on 11/14/14Rochester Auditorium Theatre - RochesterRating: 3 out of 5

I have seen this musical several times before and the special effects in this version were wonderful. I'm not sure I understood the opening act in connection with the story. The music, in the 2nd act in particular, is great fun. The voices were not as good as I anticipated. The narrator seemed to strain in the upper range and Joseph had an interesting timbre in his voice. Overall, the evening went quickly and I enjoyed myself.

It was just okay. I would not recommend. I was bored before it was over.

The show was wonderful. My son is 7 yrs old and he loved every moment. The singing and dancing was great. The narrators voice was amazing, loved her so much. Wish we could have gotten a chance to meet her. Cant wait to see the show again.

  • Out of Town Experience

by PattysHubby on 10/16/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

While out of town on a trip, Patty and I caught the final show at the Shea's Preforming Arts Center in Buffalo NY. The cast was fresh and new. Having seen Donny Osmond in Toronto some years ago, this touring production brought some twists and eye catching choreography making it seem current and ready for the next generation of theater goers. The stage and props were also simpler, but not less than the story line needed. Ace Young and Diana Degarmo as Joseph and the Narrator, captured the audience from the first song. The supporting cast gave their characters truth and life....with some outstanding moments throughout the show. "Those Canaan Days" was our most memorable part of the night. The use of the utensils was great. The reprise even felt right. Find a city near you to see the 2014 production of Joseph....you'll be entertained!!

  • Horrible casting!

by MoeHenderson on 10/15/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 2 out of 5

It seems that Ace Young was cast as Joseph simply for his name recognition (to get people to the show). His singing was below par, his dancing was non existent and his acting was horrible. This was a big disappointment. The brother's were very good and I would have much rather seen one of them in the title role.

A first rate production. The set design, props and visuals gave the show a new twist. Most impressive was the light show, just short of dazzling. The updated wardrobe gave the show a new freshness. The choreography and the dance numbers were very good. The blending of different musical styles (pop, ballads, country & western, '50's style rockabilly, calypso, etc.) could have given the performance a disjointed feel but it didn't. It worked. Though not a comedy per se; the humor was essential in making the show as pleasing and audience friendly as it is. After all, it is light, fun entertainment and it definitely hits the mark.

  • The two leads shouldn't be doing musical theatre

by BethSmith on 10/14/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 2 out of 5

Joseph is my favorite show of all time. I have seen at least seven different productions of the show, and performed in it professionally. Three things need to work in order to make this show successful. One, Joseph needs to be genuinely charismatic and has to have the right voice. I felt that Ace was mocking Joseph as he portrayed him. It did not come across as authentic, and his voice was not right for the part. Second, the narrator has to lead the show. She could have been offstage singing (and I didn't care for her voice at all) and I wouldn't have even noticed. Three, the ensemble needs to have an incredible amount of energy. This was met, in my opinion, in the second act of the show. The brothers were the best set of brothers I have seen in Joseph. The dancing was average, and go-go Joseph was a complete disappointment. After the first act, I looked at my family and said, "shall we leave now?" If we hadn't paid over $300 dollars for the tickets, we would have left then. Additionally, I brought my five and six year old, who have seen the show and loved it before. The Potiphar scene was unnecessarily inappropriate. I WOULD NOT TAKE CHILDREN to this production, unless you want to have a conversation about what happens after Joseph literally jumps in bed with Potiphar's wife and they are under the sheets as they are flying around.

  • Touring Joseph a HUGE Dissapointment

by LoveBUFTheatre on 10/14/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 1 out of 5

Look, I very rarely write a negative review of a show because I can appreciate the hard work of the cast and crew, especially of a touring production. But this production of Joseph was the worst! From the horrible stunt casting of the Narrator and Joseph to the sloppy and predictable staging and choreography. Ace does not have the singing or dancing abilities for the leading Joseph...his voice is not commanding enough and his dancing abilities should have forced him to the back row. He's just not polished enough to carry the show. His movements were not sharp and his arms were weak and not in synch with the other dancers. Diana, is just walking through the motions in awful costumes that looked like they were a total afterthought. She belts at the oddest times and words. Now, the supporting cast...stellar! They have great energy and talent as they trudge through awful choreography. Why do directors of revivals always resort to incorporating a "Stomp" routine into their choreography? It's no longer clever and just has no place, it was also a little rip off of "Rent" with the table. Joseph is my favorite Andrew Lloyd Weber show...but not this production. I've seen better high school productions.

  • Possibly my favorite musical.

by KeepToTheFactsPlease on 10/14/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

The musical was fantastic with only a few exceptions The did a great job with the sets and scenery, minimal but efficient. And the lighting was VERY well done. The only exceptions were the choice for the 2 leads: Diane DGarmo and Ace Young. Diane did a good job hitting all the right notes but her voice still needs considerable polishing. She strains to hit the high notes and she sings more from her throat than from her diaphragm, which gives her airy/whiny sound which reminded me too much of Megan Mullally of Will & grace fame. For the right role that may be a good sound. For the narrator in Joseph ... not so much. Ace Young has the body and hair to play the role, but again his voice isn't up to the role of the lead in Joseph. Apparently just being a contestant on American Idol is enough to get you lead roles though others are more qualified. On another note ... We tried to take a few photos of the restored theater, especially the ceiling BEFORE the performance. Unfortunately, the ushers in our area were quite temperamental in enforcing the "no photography or video" rule in the theater. God forbid that I post some photos of the beautiful job that has been done restoring the theater that encourages others to come to Shea's to check it out in person for themselves. Very foolish and short-sighted on the part of the usher and Shea's.

  • Simply Awesome!

Worth every penny. It just keeps moving and moving along with one song better than the previous.

  • An absolute blast!

by thx4077 on 10/14/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

The music has received a modern update, which is good news for fans familiar with the score - it's different enough to be noticed, but still enjoyable as ever. Blasts of color and projected images interact with the characters and even some of their costumes, making for a truly unique show. The singing is superb but I felt that the choreography was a little lacking this time around.

  • Love, Love, Loved It!

My daughter and I attended the show and absolutely had an amazing time. The show flew by, we were sad when it was over. Truly enjoyed the entire show, especially loved the cast of brothers, they were amazing!

  • Narrator was weak, Joseph strong

I thought narrator was weak. Ace hit it out of the ball park with the take everything song.

I absolutely loved this adaptation! If I had the time I would have gone again! Funny and extremely entertaining!

The show was very good although Joseph's voice needs to be a little stronger.
