We brought friends to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Heymann Center on March 7. I have seen the musical before and loved it. I do not like this new "modernized" rendition. Besides that, the set was not impressive at all-cheap and distracting tricks were used to get certain points across i.e. bright blinding flashing lights and strange photography. The actor who portrayed Joseph was excellent-his voice was spot on, though his dancing ability was lacking. The narrator had a very high pitched voice with sharp and sometimes annoying tones. The "brothers" tried to save the show but it was not possible! All in all, we were sadly disappointed.
Disappointed, not what I expected. My family and I watched this musical in Paris, Texas a few years ago and we loved the show, it was very biblical. The show this week was very( how do I say it) up to date (twentieth century)with sarcastic tones, I would not recommend to anyone who wants to feel uplifted and inspired. My husband and I left at intermission.
The choreography was great but the voices were very hard to understand. Also the flashing bright lights were so intense that they hurt my eyes. My fiancé has a hearing problem and the headphones were not working in the auditorium. All in all,,, a very disappointing evening and not worth the ticket price.
Musical retelling of the Bible story of Joseph and his very jealous brothers, who sell him into slavery. The music and dancing was awesome. The cast in this touring edition of the show put their all into this performance, as I'm certain they do in every show. Truly a professional corps giving an over the top performance. Thank you for coming to small town Maine and giving us a taste of Broadway.
Highly recommend. Well done version of Joseph, even when we compare it with the original Broadway production (which we saw).
We thoroughly enjoyed the production of Joseph at the Tennessee Theatre. Very well done! General comment: This is the third production of Joseph that we've seen - the two others being in Southern California, including a production at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. We've been debating whether or not we liked this production the best. We waffle back and forth between this production being our favorite, or a close second. (By the way, don't believe everything you've heard about Hollywood and the Kodak Theater. The production of Joseph that we saw there was absolutely terrible, and cost us three times as much.) Pro: - An obviously talented cast and crew. We would think it would be extremely difficult for a traveling cast and crew, who are only in one location for a couple days, and who live in and endless variety of hotel rooms, to stay enthusiastic and motivated. Kudos to this cast and crew. They put on an excellent production. Con: - We understand that the production of Joseph has never claimed to be an accurate depiction of the life of Jacob's family, and Joseph's in particular, as recorded in the Old Testament, but we were very disappointed that the script for this production was tweaked to show Joseph being thrown in jail for being caught in bed with Potiphar's wife. That's a definite contradiction of the Biblical account, and in our opinion negatively impacted the story line, particularly for children who were in attendance. That tweak was totally unnecessary. - We're still trying to figure out the purpose for the opening scene, which depicted the current day and age, prior to them transitioning into the story of Joseph.
I truly enjoyed every moment of the show! The cast was great and very talented.
We had a great time at the show. Now that she is getting older we can do this together. This show is entertaining and appropriate for younger audiences.
AMAZING talent!! My first time seeing this production.....and it was incredibly done!! Such talented performers! Funny too!
I was unsure of what to expect when I purchased the tickets to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat but was VERY pleasantly surprised!!! The presentation of this Broadway show was excellent!!! I look forward to attending many more shows!
Having been in several productions of "Joseph..." and am currently in rehearsals for another production of it, I feel I am qualified to know about this show. I went into it knowing what to expect...WRONG!!! This was far and away better than any I've seen or been a part of. The staging, the dance, the lighting, the use of projection, the set...Everything completely blew me away!!! The fact that I was in an earlier production with the person playing Jacob/Potifar didn't hurt either.
Have always loved this Classic Andrew Loyd Webber show. The performance in Knoxville did not disappoint as the performers did an exceptional job. Lots of fun to watch and Downtown Knoxville was a great place to hang around and have dinner after the show.
Really enjoyed this musical -- the performers were very talented and the scenery very creative. You got a sense that the performers were having as much fun as the audience ! I smiled throughout !!
Such colorful props and costumes. Music was great. So glad I had the opportunity to see.
Laura Helm as the narrator is excellent. She has a commanding presence on stage and a great voice. I would go back just to listen to her sing..
Forgot the original story (hadn't been to Sunday School in years). Great show and several very funny and toe-tappingly good songs. Set design rather sparse though. Used projected images rather than set pieces. My personal preference is for interesting set design which this did not have; my only negative.
Having seen many Broadway productions in New York, we were truly not disappointed. We felt like the Tennessee Theatre production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was quite impressive. After the show, my wife quipped, "I almost felt like we were in New York again."
Throughly enjoyed it time went by so fast couldn't believe it was over already.
It was so good so well done. I likes some of the subtle changed from other versions I have seen. The Nararrator had such a beautiful voice and Joseph was great but Pharaoh stole the show. I want to go again.
