About Jody Watley in Concert

Jody Watley, singer/songwriter/producer/businesswoman, is one of the architects of 21st-century pop. From her groundbreaking marriage of rap & R&B (1987’s “Friends,” a collaboration with hip-hop legends Eric B. & Rakim) to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion, street fashion, and music in the ‘80s (long before it became the norm), to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts, and the ease with which she crossed and still crosses genre, Jody Watley forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook.

Winner of the Best New Artist Grammy in 1987, Watley’s entire career has been about looking forward, drawing inspiration from personal heroes and iconoclasts who were and are always ten steps ahead of the pack. The Chicago native’s eclectic repertoire - R&B, hip-hop, House, jazz, pop, drum & bass, ambient, spoken word - is built on a positive vision and a strong taste for artistic and aesthetic risk.

    JODY Rocks!

by kitcat66 on 2/22/15B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Jody Watley still has IT!!! So good to see her and that pretty smile. BB Kings was the right venue....more intimate. Therefore, got to shake her hand and take pictures for memories. Jody shared her new material with us from the PARADISE album, but I say she needs to visit NYC more often. She also shared that she has now bought the rights to SHALAMAR......nice! Their greatest hits will always be apart of her tours now.

    Jody Watley

by Jaydencity on 2/21/15B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

We arrived at 18:15 at B.B. Kings Club Bar And Grill. Although in the announcement was indicated that seats were first come first choice that in the Grill is only partial the truth. Waiters are distributing the visitors to a table and they have their own rules. Sitting side by side for two persons is not allowed. Some tables are reserved they say. For each person seated on a table a consumption of minimal $ 10.00 is obligated. Inclusive grace you have to add $ 11.50 to your entrance fee. This is not announced when you buy tickets. The show began precise at 20:00. Jody Watley was enthusiastic received by the public. Se delivered a very good performance of all off her great successes. She closed with Sanctuary a number of her new release Paradise. Taking fotos and shooting videos was allowed and intensively practiced. The music of Jody has a lot of soul and funk. It was a revival of the disco music of the 80s. The sound was good but just like in most in the 80s a little bit to loud. In my home land this sound level is not allowed anymore. The alternating rhythm of the songs was very good. A up tempo opening en later on a little bit layer back. We liked Jody her dancers and musicians very much. They decerve fife stars. For the venue we give four stars.

    Jody Watley was mesmerizing!

by Larrynathaniel on 2/21/15B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

This is one Grammy winning veteran singer-performer that needs to return to the mainstream stage. Her music, new (Paradise) and old is what is missing. Her voice is fuller and yet she still delivers her distinct and signature Jody Watley tone. She is still beautiful and stylish to a fault. She just needs a machine to put her out there again in a bigger way. I wish I had to resources. Wow!

    Jody is always AMAZING!

by EdAnthony on 2/21/15B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Jody Watley is one of the best live performers I have ever seen. It's all live and she knows how to work the audience. It's a show that may surprise many but expected from those who have seen Jody perform over the years.

    Amazing !!

by Bt1983 on 11/18/14Tower Theatre - Upper Darby

The System was great "Don't Disturb This Groove" I thought they needed a longer set, Jody was great, I enjoyed the content of this show. She sang her bigger hits, she was in full voice nailing all her songs. The Shalamar set very good. Even the dancing. I saw her at world cafe live 5 years ago, and it was a bit more intimate you felt closer plus she had a meet and great for everyone after the show. I hope she comes back to the area sooner then later.

    Night To Remember

by FCDC on 7/23/13Howard Theatre - Washington

I was fortunate enough to remember the last time Jody Watley came to DC because I was at that show. Constitution Hall was on point all night. Jay-Z, yeah THAT Jay-Z was the DJ for the opening act, Jaz. Jody opened up with Whatcha Gonna Do For Me. Eons later I have to admit, Jody Watley STILL has IT!!! She didn't need an opening act. She can still hit the notes and "walk that walk".

JODY WATLEY Still A Thrill !!!!

by neyosoul on 7/22/13Howard Theatre - Washington

Jody Watley was still looks and sounds Amazing! Ms. Watley took us down memory lane starting with her soul train days to Shalamar to her own solo success! Jody's voice is still intact and she is able to deliver her songs with the same smoldering intensity as she did in her youth. She fell in step with her two back-up dancers on several selections and didn't miss a beat! Ms. Watley still brings drama and intensity to her performance with her signature fan, that she whips up and at you in a flash. I was standing up almost the entire show and Jody kept the energy level high and delivered the goods.

Miss Watley is Still A Thrill!

by JaneRae on 7/22/13Howard Theatre - Washington

Rumors started circulating before the show that there was no photography allowed. My friends and I thought that odd and figured that they meant no "flash" photography, which is standard. The audience was a rainbow of color and some were more flambouyant than Miss Watley herself! She took the stage and the party began. Since we were in the middle of a heatwave here in DC, there was not a dry armpit in the place! Through multiple wardrobe changes, Jody's voice was solid and the musicians backing her were skilled and able to help soundly deliver her energetic set. And lo, and behold, the rumors were true...Miss Watley seemed a bit preoccupied with people NOT taking "ugly" photos or videos of her. In my opinion, she did not need to worry. Named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in 1990 by People Magazine, at age 54 she is still the godmother of fashion and perfectly gorgeous!

    Still A Thrill!!!!

    by bostonjay2 on 7/22/13Howard Theatre - Washington

What a night! All the hits were there, including new tracks from the upcoming 'Nightlife' album. Tracks from the Shalamar days to the overlooked 'Saturday Night Experience' project were showcased, but we were all there for the hits. As soon as she put her hoops on (while singing and dancing no less) it was like no time had passed since she burst on the scene as a solo act. As she has matured, so has the music. 'Friends' was smoothed out a bit, but when Jody did Rakim's verses the crowd went nuts. 'Most Of All' was dramatically different. She referenced both a change in her and the song, much more of a lament then pop song. The crowd was silent during 'When A Man Loves A Woman', acknowledging the complications of the song back in the day.Radio wouldn't touch a safe sex song in the height of the AIDS crisis. When the show closed with Real Love, everyone left knowing this was a special night.

    JODY IS LOVE!

by ilovejody on 8/16/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Where do I start? This was maybe my fifth time seeing a show at the Birchmere. Every show I have seen there has been excellent. The venue is nice, professional, relaxing, accommodating and most of all "entertaining". Now being a die hard Jody Watley admirer, I was extremely pleased with her performance. I remember seeing her back in the late 80"s at The Beacon Theatre in New York. I have always loved her records, style, her dancing, her attitude and her professionalism. SHE IS THE REASON WHY I LOVE TO DANCE. I have followed her career since Soul Train----to now. Her show was EXCELLENT and I enjoyed it 110 percent. JODY WATLEY is....and will always be....LOVE!

    Jody Was Awesome

    by kmacbs78 on 8/9/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I've loved Jody since I was a kid, and this was my first time seeing her live in concert. Her performance was simply amazing!!! She was so warm and interactive with the audience throughout the show. She also did a meet and greet with fans afterwards, which was just wonderful. Whenever Ms. Watley returns to the Birchmere, I will definitely be there!!!!!!

    Ms. Jody Watlet @ Birchmere

by ChiTownEd on 7/31/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Simply, Jody is in rare form. Although she is not a powerhouse vocally, she is still the entertainer that won Best New Artist decades ago. Her show was full of energy, old hits, surprise songs, great dance music and a rare improvisation that she herself was surprised happened. It was great watching her in her element and on stage. If you are open to great energy, a few ballads and lost of dance opportunities, Jody is your show. Think Mary J. Blige meets Donna Summer and you have Jody Watley.

by TYZTOY on 7/31/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Jody is very personable. She pulls you into the show with her style and flair. I would love to hear more new music from her. The one new song she performed was like that. Now i remember why I love Erykah Badu.
