Jeff Lynne's ELO in Concert

"It's nice to have songs in your catalog that stand the test of time." So says creator Jeff Lynne about one of the most cherished troves in the history of pop music. As the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who masterminded the Electric Light Orchestra (or ELO for short), the Birmingham-bred Lynne created a fabulously futuristic yet eminently engaging series of hit albums and singles that may be just as thrilling to new generations of listeners as they were to the millions who bought them during ELO's original run from 1970 to 1986. Indeed, thanks to these songs' presence on the soundtracks for movies like ‘American Hustle' and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,' it feels like ELO's hardly been away.

Yet until the new revival, ELO had been dormant since 1986, Lynne resurrecting the band only briefly for the 2001 album ‘Zoom.' Lynne stayed busy with solo albums and production work for friends like George Harrison and Tom Petty, two legends who'd join him alongside the late Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan in the Traveling Wilburys. Then the release of a new compilation in 2012 — ‘Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra' — spurred Lynne and original ELO member Richard Tandy to perform a benefit concert at London's Apollo. It led to a much grander return for BBC Two's Hyde Park Festival in 2014, with all 50,000 tickets selling out in 15 minutes. "That felt like I was breaking through a barrier," said Lynne of the end of ELO's long hiatus as a live act. The triumphs continued with a medley of "Evil Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" at the 2015 Grammy Awards, a historic concert at England's iconic Wembley Stadium in 2016, and ELO's 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

With the help of musical director Mike Stevens and 13 players, Jeff Lynne continues to bring the ELO experience to audiences worldwide in a two-hour show that includes such classics as "Evil Woman," "Strange Magic," and "Livin' Thing." Fans can also enjoy more unexpected pleasures like "Do Ya" by The Move, the ‘60s rockers that first teamed Lynne and his ELO cofounder Roy Wood, and the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care." The new ELO songs Lynne wrote and recorded for ‘Alone in the Universe' (2015) prove that one of pop's most celebrated craftsmen has not lost his Midas touch.

    Finally getting to see ELO

    by HoraceWimp80 on 9/13/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I've been a fan of ELO since High School in the 70s. Never had a chance to see them back then. Never thought Jeff Lynne would ever tour. This was a great show of so many of my favorite songs. And I had never been to the historic Hollywood bowl. Really enjoyed the opening segment with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra. Would love to see a long show with them one day. But I am so happy I went to see ELO. Hope to see them again in the future

ELO - Still amazing after all these years!

by Funkem on 9/13/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The show was comprised of favorites from the first album to the last CD. After seeing hundreds of concerts, this was one of the best I have ever seen from the music, to the laser light show, to the fireworks at the end. I hope Jeff Lynne will continue touring in the upcoming years. Ole ELO!

    Jeff Lynne's ELO - ROCKED!!!!!!

by BlindFaithFan on 9/13/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

WOW!!! What an amazing show! Jeff Lynne's voice is amazing! I've been to well over 200 concerts in the last 30 years and this is by far the best I've seen. Better than Pink Floyd at the Rose Bowl. Better than U2, David Gilmore, The WHO (okay it was tied with the WHO). From the first song to the last we never sat down. We sang and danced the whole time. It went by in a flash!!! What a night!!!!

    Jeff Lynn's ELO--Amazing

by Nevvy on 9/13/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

We saw Jeff Lynne's ELO at the Hollywood Bowl on September 9, 2016. This was the band's first U.S. appearance on this tour. The show was nothing short of spectacular. The band was accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl orchestra, who played 3 or 4 classical pieces before ELO took the stage. ELO played many of their old hits and a few songs from their new album, which we would recommend checking out. The performances were flawless. Jeff Lynne's voice is as fresh and crisp as in the 70s. For their encore, the band played "Roll Over Beethoven," which was accompanied by a fireworks show. Anyone attending the ELO concerts at Radio City Music Hall on September 16 or 18 should be looking forward to a fabulous show. A few words about the Hollywood Bowl: We would recommend attending any event at the Hollywood Bowl. It is a venue like no other. Before the show, people gather around outside the theater on the lawns or at picnic tables to enjoy a peaceful dinner and a bottle of wine, or stroll the grounds to check out the Bowl museum, gift shop, and wine store. The staff is friendly and helpful. From inside the theater, guests enjoy a splendid view of the hills; the Hollywood sign is visible from some seats.

    Strange Magic

by Huitzitzilin on 9/13/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The performance was amazing. It went by soooo fast..that's how good it was. It didn't even seem as if an hour and a half of performance time went by. Jeff Lynne's voice is still amazing as ever. The only downfall of the concert was the fact that some people that were there were so rude. They didn't want to move for people as they wanted to make their way back to their seats. People were shouting out "sit down" to people who were so excited for a song that they just had to stand up and dance to. I'm used to concerts where people don't care if others get up and dance. Love the Hollywood Bowl!

    Awesome Show

by macdaddyflash on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Absolutely the best show of the summer at the bowl. I had tickets to 3 events at the Bowl this summer and this was by far the best. Jeff Lynne was fantastic and hasn't lost a best in the 30 years that he has been absent from the stage. Never got to see ELO before in concert and am glad I got to go to this performance. The graphics on the bowl were really cool as well as the screen behind the Orchestra.

    ELO Concert was GREAT!

    by Suebug717 on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

We had a great time with ELO at the Hollywood Bowl. They played our favorite songs and some others less familiar. Wish more familiar songs were played instead of some lesser known songs, but that's how it goes. Still lots of fun! Wish we would have sprung for better seats... but so happy we didn't miss the chance to see them.

    An amazing show!!!

    by kims71 on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The hubby and I took our son on a road trip from Arizona to the Hollywood Bowl to see ELO. It was not only totally worth it, it was the thrill of a lifetime. The years have been kind to Jeff Lynne as he looks and sounds exactly the same as he did in the 1970s. His large band and the Hollywood Orchestra recreated the ELO sound perfectly. The set list, although not real long, included all of their biggest hits. The light show was truly awesome to see. It was also very special being at the Hollywood Bowl for the first time, a truly beautiful and historic venue. From where we sat, we could see the Hollywood sign on the mountain behind the stage. It was a magical night that I loved sharing with my family.

    Fantastic show; amazing atmosphere

by otterluv on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I waited a looooong time to see ELO, a band I always kicked myself for not having seen back in the day. I was so excited and thrilled to have the opportunity to finally see them, and they did not disappoint! The sell-out crowd at the Hollywood Bowl (night one) was a fabulous happy atmosphere, with just about everybody singing along to songs they all knew and love. As the conductor of the Bowl orchestra said, prior to ELO coming on to the stage, Jeff Lynn is a musical genius, having been one of the first to meld classical and a little bit of opera together with rock and pop. The encore of Chuck Berry's classic, "Roll Over Beethoven", set to fireworks, was amazing.

    by Drew1960 on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was an awesome show. My first ever rock concert was ELO in March 1977. Jeff Lynne mad me feel like I was a teenager again! The acoustics, the band, back up singers & orchestra all were in sync. I hope he comes back next year. Would definitely see him again.

One of the best concerts I've ever been to!

by Orangeblossommai on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was by far one of the best concerts that I have had the opportunity of seeing. Everything was amazing and way beyond expectation - the laser effects, the lighting, the fireworks timed with music, and of course the excellent instrumentalists and vocalists. If you ever have the opportunity to see ELO live in your lifetime, don't pass it up! Truly and unforgettable experience.

Jeff Lynne at the Hollywood Bowl! Spectacular!

by PGDoesHollywood on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

If Jeff Lynne at his Hollywood Bowl debut had just played so many of his catchy, wonderful hits, that would have been great. But he did it with a voice that hasn't aged, along with a large band, many backup singers, and the entire Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, which was amazing. And on top of that, there were lasers, special effects, fog machines, clouds made of light, the trademark ELO spaceship flying around the screens, and an encore that included a timed fireworks display! It was the perfect 1970's over-the-top, rock show spectacle-extravaganza! And not only was it a massive, impressive show, but at the heart of it was a setlist filled with truly great melodies. I'm so happy I got to see Jeff Lynne live (and for a great price)!
