Jeff Lynne's ELO in Concert

"It's nice to have songs in your catalog that stand the test of time." So says creator Jeff Lynne about one of the most cherished troves in the history of pop music. As the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who masterminded the Electric Light Orchestra (or ELO for short), the Birmingham-bred Lynne created a fabulously futuristic yet eminently engaging series of hit albums and singles that may be just as thrilling to new generations of listeners as they were to the millions who bought them during ELO's original run from 1970 to 1986. Indeed, thanks to these songs' presence on the soundtracks for movies like ‘American Hustle' and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,' it feels like ELO's hardly been away.

Yet until the new revival, ELO had been dormant since 1986, Lynne resurrecting the band only briefly for the 2001 album ‘Zoom.' Lynne stayed busy with solo albums and production work for friends like George Harrison and Tom Petty, two legends who'd join him alongside the late Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan in the Traveling Wilburys. Then the release of a new compilation in 2012 — ‘Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra' — spurred Lynne and original ELO member Richard Tandy to perform a benefit concert at London's Apollo. It led to a much grander return for BBC Two's Hyde Park Festival in 2014, with all 50,000 tickets selling out in 15 minutes. "That felt like I was breaking through a barrier," said Lynne of the end of ELO's long hiatus as a live act. The triumphs continued with a medley of "Evil Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" at the 2015 Grammy Awards, a historic concert at England's iconic Wembley Stadium in 2016, and ELO's 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

With the help of musical director Mike Stevens and 13 players, Jeff Lynne continues to bring the ELO experience to audiences worldwide in a two-hour show that includes such classics as "Evil Woman," "Strange Magic," and "Livin' Thing." Fans can also enjoy more unexpected pleasures like "Do Ya" by The Move, the ‘60s rockers that first teamed Lynne and his ELO cofounder Roy Wood, and the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care." The new ELO songs Lynne wrote and recorded for ‘Alone in the Universe' (2015) prove that one of pop's most celebrated craftsmen has not lost his Midas touch.

Jeff Lynne is the Master of Alchemy

by PamVA on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I've been an ELO fan 43 years, so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. What I didn't expect was to be transformed. The songs I remembered from decades ago sounded like classical masterpieces on steroids with the accompaniment of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. I've heard Jeff lynne's ELO recently without the full Orchestra, and that was spectacular. With the orchestra they were supernal. Jeff Lynne is like an alchemist weaving Magical Melodies, entrancing the audience, and transmuting the base metal of our souls into gold. The fireworks finale during Roll Over Beethoven added to the magic. Jeff's is the comeback to top all comebacks. He should get the recognition he deserves as a creative genius after being regarded as a "guilty pleasure" in the 70s and 80s.

ELO an oldie but a goodie

by Derdog on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have loved ELO for 40 years and this was my first chance to see them in person. I certainly was not disappointed. The played all my old favorites and the sound at the Hollywood bowl was awesome!

    The best concert EVER!

by paulfilm on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I love ELO but OMG do they sound so much better LIVE!!! The concert at the Hollywood bowl was nothing short of spectacular...from the music to the laser show, it was amazing. Jeff Lynne treated us to ELO hits like, Evil Woman, Mr. Blue Sky, Tightrope, and so many more! The only criticism I have is that they should have used Mr. Blue Sky for the fireworks encore NOT Roll Over Beethoven.

    Like a robot...

by Arkahn on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The music of ELO is/was wonderful. I went all 3 nights & was wanting the shows to be a little different. I can't really remember the old days of when Jeff performed. Did have no stage presence then as well? The music sounded great but zero connection with the audience..

    Jeff Lynne Musical Genius

    by jcross2306 on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

My friend and I flew to LA to see all three sold out shows. It was truly amazing! The music sounded fantastic and the light show was mind blowing. Too bad he is only playing 5 US shows.

    Jeff Lynne pulled it off

by TheHerbz on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

ELO rivaled Pink Floyd for the most incredible lights and graphics. Being able to create all his studio wizardry in person puts Jeff Lynne in a class by himself. AND he writes great songs too! It was obvious why some people have referred to him as the Fifth Beatle.

    Completely Fantastic Show!!!

by KDubber on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Jeff Lynne is a consummate musician & talent all the way around. The spectacular show was perfect in every way. You truly do not want to miss seeing him and ELO. At our performance, they played with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra and included a fireworks finale that topped all finales of all time. Don't Miss Out if you get the chance to see him! You never know if someone will come this way again - and if not, you will live to regret it, trust me!

by ACWettig on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I've been looking forward to this concert for quite some time and I wasn't disappointed. Every song was great, performed just like ELO in their hayday. I wish every ELO fan could see this show, wherever they are.

Best Show at Hollywood Bowl Yet!

by BethFromHuntingtonBeach on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Jeff Lynne and ELO with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra sounded fantastic! The laser show was a huge add, the entire show was over the top! Thomas Wilkins is by far the best conductor and brings so much to every show he leads, he brings the music to life even for those of us who don't know or appreciate classical music as much as some. Thank you for a beautiful evening!

    Incredible night with Jeff Lynne!

    by Peerless60 on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Had never been to the Hollywood Bowl before...what an incredible venue. Even though we were a bit back from the stage the sound was fantastic. The video monitors on each side helped a too. The whole evening was a pleasure...seeing/hearing Jeff Lynne live (first time since 1980) was a wish come true. His band-mates were all very talented in their own right. The opera singer had a beautiful voice. Every song they played brought back memories for me and the rest of the crowd. We sang along to every song, else we stood there mesmerized by the incredible laser light show...what an experience!!! Can't wait to see him again...just hope I don't have to wait so long next time!

The most amazing show ever !!

    by Mitchytx8888 on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have been a fan of ELO since I was a kid. My dad introduced me to their music at a very young age and ever since then I have considered them to be my most favorite band ever. Coming to this show was a dream come true. Every second was nerve racking because I knew at some point it would have to end. I'm just glad that I was able to see the greatest band in the world (in my opinion)!

    ELO--Awesome Show

by manrossb on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Wow, what a Sunday night. The music, the light show, the fireworks--all great. Saw ELO at the Universal Amphitheater (no longer there) back in '74 or '75. This show was every bit as good as that one, & then some. As usual, a group can't play all their songs in one night--wish they had done Strange Magic; however, the ones they did do were all good. Here's hoping Jeff has gotten the message that we all would like to see more from the group--another tour in 2017 maybe????? But this was a magical evening. Thanks, ELO!

    Jeff Lynne's ELO was amazing!

by Dsignz on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Had the pleasure of seeing JL's ELO Friday and was blown away by everything! The music, the light show, the HBO was wonderful. They didn't miss a beat and everything sounded as good as it ever did, maybe even better. My only regret, was that I didn't buy my tickets sooner to be closer to the stage. I'd see them again if they came back.

This concert was AMAZING! I have wanted to see Jeff Lynne for so long. Everything was just perfect! Like I said, it was a dream come true for me!I loved growing up with his music – the perfect mix of rock, Beatles, orchestra, and disco! This show was just AMAZING! Every song was played to perfection! I could not stay in my seat because I had to dance! The light show was so good, it looked like the bowl was going to launch like a rocket! And it was so great to end the show with fireworks in sync with the music!!! Jeff Lynne is so gracious and humble. I'm so grateful for his positive and uplifting music that we can listen to as a family!

    by SoCalFan63 on 9/14/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

So much fun! It was like 2 concerts in one! Hollywood Bowl orchestra played a set before Lynne took over. The music, lights, fireworks were beyond words. Highly recommend seeing his show. Wish I could have attended more than one night.
