About

Jeff Lynne's ELO in Concert

"It's nice to have songs in your catalog that stand the test of time." So says creator Jeff Lynne about one of the most cherished troves in the history of pop music. As the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who masterminded the Electric Light Orchestra (or ELO for short), the Birmingham-bred Lynne created a fabulously futuristic yet eminently engaging series of hit albums and singles that may be just as thrilling to new generations of listeners as they were to the millions who bought them during ELO's original run from 1970 to 1986. Indeed, thanks to these songs' presence on the soundtracks for movies like ‘American Hustle' and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,' it feels like ELO's hardly been away.

Yet until the new revival, ELO had been dormant since 1986, Lynne resurrecting the band only briefly for the 2001 album ‘Zoom.' Lynne stayed busy with solo albums and production work for friends like George Harrison and Tom Petty, two legends who'd join him alongside the late Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan in the Traveling Wilburys. Then the release of a new compilation in 2012 — ‘Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra' — spurred Lynne and original ELO member Richard Tandy to perform a benefit concert at London's Apollo. It led to a much grander return for BBC Two's Hyde Park Festival in 2014, with all 50,000 tickets selling out in 15 minutes. "That felt like I was breaking through a barrier," said Lynne of the end of ELO's long hiatus as a live act. The triumphs continued with a medley of "Evil Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" at the 2015 Grammy Awards, a historic concert at England's iconic Wembley Stadium in 2016, and ELO's 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

With the help of musical director Mike Stevens and 13 players, Jeff Lynne continues to bring the ELO experience to audiences worldwide in a two-hour show that includes such classics as "Evil Woman," "Strange Magic," and "Livin' Thing." Fans can also enjoy more unexpected pleasures like "Do Ya" by The Move, the ‘60s rockers that first teamed Lynne and his ELO cofounder Roy Wood, and the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care." The new ELO songs Lynne wrote and recorded for ‘Alone in the Universe' (2015) prove that one of pop's most celebrated craftsmen has not lost his Midas touch.

WOW, ELO is better than Ever

by jimpower on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What can I say. The last time I saw Jeff Lynne in a show was Anaheim Stadium 1978. Tony Curtus was shooting Alien's with a lazar. This weekend 2016 with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Jeff Lynne was SO AMAZING. I went opening night and sat pretty close and he proved himself again as one of "Rock n Roll's" greatest of all time. The first night I got the feel of all on stage as the set list just kept delivering one powerful song after another. There were several tear jerker moments. I loved the experience so much that I went a second time Saturday night and sat in the middle and half way up the bowl. That experience gave all the visual events that up close does not see. He had lazer's floating off a smoke screed similar to Disney's World of Color. Opening song with Orchestra only then leading into ELO guitarist Jeff Lynne making it happen. Same thing with closing song "Roll Over" Same thing orchestra serious playing for a minute then bring in Jeff ripping off a lead guitar lick and off we go. The second night event with all the songs playing and lots of dancing. I hope you went. you missed a unforgettable night. Thank you Jeff Lynne.

    AWESOME

by Maedus on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I am convinced Jeff Lynne has invented a time travel machine; which he used to teleport his 1970's self to the Hollywood Bowl and perform for us. My evidence? He sounds the same. He looks the same. Therefore, time travel. On top of that, the band sounded just like records and the light show was ON-POINT (cheers to the visual graphics person). Add fireworks to all that perfection, and you have the best night ever.

    Sounding Better Than Ever!!

by HTownWolfman on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I cannot believe how amazing Jeff Lynne and the whole band sounds. I saw ELO 35 years ago and it was my first major concert. I had given up hope of ever seeing them again and then "out of the blue" a new album and a tour happen. I flew from Houston to L.A. to see them at the Hollywood Bowl. What an experience. The music, the light show and the fireworks synchronized with "Roll Over Beethoven" for the encore. Wow, just wow! Jeff Lynne's voice sounds as great as ever and with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra backing the group up, it was magical.

    ELO was amazing!

by LarkinN on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was my first time ever seeing a show at the bowl. The venue is kind of a hassle. Getting to and from the venue was a huge ordeal and then having to wait over a half hour in a line of 10-15 people to get drinks was really annoying. There's gotta be a way to give the concession stand some extra support, because that part of the experience was truly awful (and why A didn't give the review 5 stars). Venue problems aside, THE CONCERT WAS AMAZING!!!! Jeff Lynn sounded incredible! The orchestra was perfect! There were sweet lasers and cool visuals the whole time. I definitely cried a couple of times. I never thought I'd get to see ELO IRL, and I'm so glad I did!!! AHHH!!!! The fireworks finale!!!! I lost my mind! It was so beautiful! I would 1000% brave the madness at the Hollywood Bowl to see ELO again if they ever tour the states again.

    Best Show I've Ever Seen

by Dogslaw on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This show was nothing short of amazing! This was my first time at the Hollywood Bowl and I'm so glad it was to see this fantastic show. Sometimes with live shows, the band sounds nothing like you would hear on the radio or CD, Jeff Lynne sounded just like you would have hoped. His voice was great, he interacted with the audience, and his band was superb. The graphics shown and the lasers around the Hollywood Bowl really fit in with the show, and the fireworks capped off the night. I would see this show again, and again.

ONE OF THE BEST SONG WRITER AND PRODUCER

by NELLIETAKESHERBOW on 11/26/12GRAMMY MUSEUM - LOS ANGELES

I TOO CAME FROM THOUSANDS OF MILES TO SEE JEFF LYNNE SPEAK. THE MAN IS TRULY AND INCREDIBLE MUSICIAN, SONG WRITER AND PRODUCER. I REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING HOW HIS STUDIO IS SET UP IN HIS HOUSE. ALSO IT WAS SO AMAZING TO SEE ALL THE AWARDS HUNG UP SO PROUDLY IN HIS STUDIO AND THERE WERE A LOT. I TOO OWN A STUDIO AND DREAM OCCASIONALLY THAT I SAT DOWN WITH HIM AND WRITE AND PRODUCE SOME MUSIC WITH HIM. ONE THING I CAN DO HE CAN'T IS READ PIANO SHEET MUSIC. I THOUGHT THE LADY FROM THE RADIO STATION WAS AN IDIOT. INSTEAD OF HAVING JEFF SPEAK MORE OR TAKING MORE QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE SHE REPEATED TO TALK ABOUT THE VIDEO THAT WAS JUST SHOT. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME OF HER RE-CAPPING EVERYTHING IN THE VIDEO.
