Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

    Jason Isbell show was awesome

by CINTImusicmom on 7/2/17PNC Pavilion - CINCINNATI

I've listened to him on the radio a lot and know a little bit about "his story" but none of that prepared me for the incredible rocking show. The 400 Unit band was fantastic, easily trading leads and feeding off each other's playing. Fiddle player and wife, Amanda, held her own alternating between nice accents and strong leads--she could keep up with the guys and the guitars! I'm sure The Allman Brothers would appreciate the encore tribute, a most amazing version of Whipping Post pushed to the max instrumentally and vocally. A perfect night cap to a great show.

The weather in Boston was rough that night for an outdoor concert, but Jason Isbell and the 400 unit did not disappoint. Great show!

Jason and The Band Kill It!

by HBeach631 on 6/30/17Blue Hills Bank Pavilion - Boston

A great show from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. High energy, good rapport with crowd, song selection was impeccable. Jason's exchanges with Amanda Shires (violinist and wife) were warm and affectionate. Drummer was out of his mind good. 30 minute delay to start of show because of passing line of thunderstorms, but excitement remained high. I would see them every week if I could. The Nashville Sound is as good as music gets.

Second time seeing him, first discovered opening for My Morning Jacket. Sublime from start to finish, honest, raw, flawless. He should be selling out everywhere.

    A Rocking Evening, Southern Style

by McCycle on 6/27/17Beacon Theatre - New York

Phenomenal show, with Isbell and the 400 Unit electrifying the Beacon with every number, abetted by wife Amanda Shires, who is a wonder as well. And the encore ode to the Allman Brothers "Whipping Post" was as real and brilliant as it gets.

Jason Isbell never fails to speak to me

by Bethelfan34566778 on 6/26/17Beacon Theatre - New York

I see Jason Isbell a couple of times per year and he always brings his whole self to the performance. He is humble and intelligent and a strong person...and it all comes through in his music. He is a powerhouse on stage.

Standing Crowd killed it for me

by BrooklynSteve1171 on 6/25/17Beacon Theatre - New York

Fine music and performances, I think, but I can't stand for 1¾ hours and I thus didn't see much of Jason Isbell's set.

by Decemberdad on 6/25/17Beacon Theatre - New York

So far this year I've seen some awesome shows - Stapleton, U2, John Legend and others ... Jason, Amanda and their baby girl have been my favorite so far. Wish I could have stayed to see another night. Definitely going to work another night of his tour into my schedule. Awesome.

    Missed the Mark

by NashvilleAsvheville on 6/22/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

I think I would say that I'm a avid follower of Jason and the 400 unit. Living around Nashville it is very hard to get tickets to his shows. So for my 24th wedding anniversary I got tickets for the kickoff tour in Asheville NC for the new album. I felt like the concert was a transition from old to new. The old Jason was stand up on stage and hear one of the best Americana artist around. I didn't feel like that when I left. To much smoke and lights. The sound was not good. I couldn't figure out if this was the venue or just too loud. One problem I have with artists is that loud doesn't equal good and this concert was loud but not that good. One of the best performances I've seen of them was the Bluegrass Underground show. They were in their purist form. No strobe lights, No smoke machines.

Jason Isbell is a gift as a songwriter, guitarist, and performer. During the show I kept thinking, "I get to experience this." I saw him six months ago and expected it to be outstanding, and my expectations were only exceeded.

Show was great but the acoustics were terrible.

by Titelines on 6/20/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

I had to work too hard to hear the fine music from jason isbell. It's my first time seeing a show in that venue. I don't know if it was the equipment or acoustics of the building. It's a shame. Great band and music.

by Lindsay5402 on 6/20/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

Insanely good show. Lucky to have seen the opening show of this new tour in Asheville. The setlist was awesome, a good mix of new and old with a couple of treats thrown in there. He blew the roof off with the encore!

    This is a MUST DO!

by TriciaandRick on 6/20/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

I've heard some fans are concerned about the new direction Jason and the gang are taking but not to worry - the show in Asheville was a perfect blend of old and new and it's all great! We'd never seen Amanda Shires in concert - she's amazing and added so much to the evening.

    Jason and Amanda were outstanding!

by LisaAnn1961 on 6/20/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

This is the second time I've seen Jason live, and he was rocking it. If you get a chance to see this tour, go - especially if Amanda Shires is his opening act.
