Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

    Great night in Asheville!

by JCR87 on 6/20/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

My 16th time seeing this band, and it may have been the best one yet. Paid tribute to the late Gregg Allman by covering Whipping Post as the last song of their encore.

This guy paints an image with every verse in a song. No video needed. Just sit back, listen and let the film roll!!

Jason and 400 Unit are a must see

by AmericanaHart on 4/29/17Portsmouth Pavilion - Portsmouth

Full disclosure I am a huge fan. With that being said if you are a fan of guitar driven lyrical genius go see one of his shows. If you are under the impression that he is folk or country you are incorrect. Jason is Rock Americana (not much roll). He had tears in the crowds eyes with We Were Vampires and 5 minutes later he brings out THE BIG AX Gibson 335 and rips the roof off the Berglund.

Jason Isbell is a magical lyricist and wizard on the guitar. He keeps the crowd singing and swinging appealing to those who live and breathe the South. Jason is a the marriage of Avett Bros and Eric Church. Love love love!!

District Attorneys, Lera Lynn, Jason Isbell, Whigs

by MitNagrom on 11/26/12Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

Great deal on a lot of musical entertainment. 4 bands that did a killer job. A lot of fun and the lineup was not what I had originally expected, but it turned out to be great. The room is laid out well with easy viewing of the stage. The bar was easily accessible, and their is a smoking section for those who partake in the nicotene. The sound was mediocre and a bit muddy, but acceptible if the room wasnt so noisy with loud talking people. The chatter from the audience seemed extremely high and my group all complained on the ride home about how we knew everything about the people that were more than 10' away from us since they talked through almost every song from every band while waving their iPhone around acting like they were stars on a reality show. It was unlike anything we'd ever seen before. I'm not sure if the room has odd acoustics or if there were a TON of chatty people with really annoying voices. It did take away from the show for sure. Lara Lynn actually made a few comments about how people must not have come to see her since it was a room full of chatter while she played. That was not likely the case. She was fantastic and plodded through it, but you could see her frustration. As the bands got louder it did help drown out some of the loud talking, but it didnt stop it at all. Maybe twitter, facebook and our smartphones have convinced us that people actually want to hear all of our BS, even during a concert. Not the case for me, but, it is the world we live in. I wished I had a squirt gun at one point so I could spray some people in the face and remind them that they were not the one we came to hear. Good show. Bad audience maybe. A different venue might've drawn a cooler crowd I think. I'd go to this theater again, but only for certain bands.

Jason was abbreviated but Arliss Nasty was horrid

by JasonFanDenver on 9/19/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Arliss Nancy songs seemed to follow the same beat and rhythm. The vocals were washed out but it appeared they were just screaming the same song over and over. The low was the bass player removing his shirt to show a prison tat on his chest that gyrated with his belly fat. The drummer was entertaining as he hit the drums so hard that he repeatedly lost his glasses into the drum kit. The set was loud and unremarkable... Jason was a class act by comparison. The band is very talented musically. Jason really excels at songwriting. However, his show was shorter than in the past 4 times that I have seen him. He was also missing his talented guitar player Browan Lollar at his side. Maybe that limited the songs that they could play without having two guitars. I was disappointed that he didn't play We Ain't Never Going To Change for an encore. Oh yeah... They didn't play an encore... Puzzling? Great show... He needs to play his 2.5 hour sets like his used to play at the Laramer Lounge....

Justin Townes Earle is a superb performer. And Jason Isbell gave 200%. Both interacted a great deal with the audience, sounded amazing and seemed to really be enjoying themselves.

Saenger venue was awesome. Staff was awesome. Justin Townes Earle was amazing and sounded even better live than recorded. That girl put a whuppin' on the dog house bass. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit rocked the house. Wonderful way to spend the evening with my son.

    Isbell was short but sweet

by Wapj on 1/21/11The National - Richmond

The band did not come on until late and played maybe 6 songs. While the band typically plays a very good show, especially at The National, this was not their best showing. The opening band's performance was longer than the actual band's performance. A little disappointing.

    Jason Isbell Rocks!!

    by mmmhmmm7 on 10/19/10Grog Shop - Cleveland

The crowd left after Langhorne Slim and I'm pretty sure it was because they had class the next day and/or were out after curfew. But the night peaked when Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit played. They jammed and kicked ass even though playing to a small crowd. They played most all of their stuff including DBT recordings. Seeing them live is a lot better than their CD.......A lot of bands can't perform live...but this band commits to a great show. I totally recommend seeing them if you get a chance!!!
