Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert
Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.
Jason is a great songwriter and singer. The 400 Unit are awesome musicians. It was an excellent show!
Can't say enough so I won't . Awesome venue and awesome show.
This was a fabulous show. I'm sixty years old and came of age in the 70's. I pretty much saw all the great acts of that decade and many since. This show ranked up there with some of the best I've ever seen. Jason's new album is awesome, rocking at times and quiet and soulful at times. Poignant lyrics perfect for the times. "If We Were Vampires" is a song that will live on forever in the same vein as Jackson Browne's "For a Dancer." Jason played almost the whole new album, which I thought was great because I've been listening to it every day for the past month. I might drive to Shreveport, New Braunfels, or Baton Rouge to see him again on this tour.
Everything was absolutely perfect. I wish people would have stood on their feet more especially during the more upbeat songs. It was a perfect evening and the music and sound were beautiful
J.I. and the 400 Unit deliver once again. Showcasing 9 songs from their fabulous new album 'The Nashville Sound' this band kills it. Been to a half dozen shows over the years and the songwriting and performances just get better and better. Amanda appeared in this show in St. Louis and I really feel she makes the 400 Unit complete. Not a glitch in the performance the entire 2 hour show and Jason's never been better. A truly great American band.
Jason Isbell has evolved into one of the best acts in folk, rock, country whatever genre you care to assign. His vocals are powerful and the 400 Unit is tight.
Jason, with his wife on fiddle, and the talented 400 Unit backing them put on a fantastic show.
Such a great live performance. Jason isbell was captivating. Songs were beautiful. One of the Better shows I have been to this year
Maybe one of the best shows I've seen. Isbell is polished, song writing is truly phenomenal,400 unit are so talented, and Isbell just keeps getting better.
Difficulty hearing the vocals in the Mountain Goats performance, but I thought they did well considering the setting sun in their eyes throughout their entire performance. Why cant the Rose Center close the curtains in the rear of the seating on that side. They were also a challenge for the beginning of the Jason Isbell performance. Jason and the 400 unit put on a great show. This is my 2nd Isbell performance (the other in Cincy at the Taft) and this was show far exceeded the previous. The playlist relied heavily on the newly released 'Nashville Sound' album which was great and several songs off the previous album (glad to hear both Elephant, Codeine, 24 frames and Stockholm) the 400 unit gave strong support and benefits from the addition of Amanda Shires.
Decided to make the 3 hour trip the day of the show and was glad I did. Good mix of new and old songs made up the setlist. First time at The Rose and was impressed by the venue. Only disappointing thing was the request for no photography.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit performed flawlessly throughout the entire show. I knew Jason Isbell to be a great singer and song writer, but he is also a fantastic guitarist with a more powerful voice than I realized. All of the musicians were excellent and put on an amazing performance. Our whole group was in awe, and are ready to see them again!
The weather and venue were perfect and so was the show. If you have never listened to Jason Isbell you are missing something soulful, inspiring, insightful and poetic. He fits no single music category. I am not a traditional country fan by any means so I was a little hesitate when I was first introduced to JI music. Now I love everything I have heard from him and seeing him and his band live just cemented the deal. If you are a music lover of ANY kind do yourself a favor and check out Jason Isbell. Start with the Southeastern CD. If he were playing anywhere even remotely close I would go to the show all over again.
This is the second time I've seen Jason Isbell live. I will see him many more times. He puts on one of the best shows I've ever attended. Excellent music and he definitely tries to interact with his fans. I can't recommend this guy enough. Awesome time.
Phenominal show! New album is awesome!! Played all of my favorites!!
This was an excellent show! I highly recommend seeing Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.
Great players, funny stories and Louboutin's !! What more could a girl ask for?
Great performance in a great venue. One of the best shows I've seen!
Jason Isbell is the best storyteller in music right now. He can also shred on the guitar. We drove over 200 miles for this show and they did not disappoint!
Absolutely amazing! I cannot wait to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit again!
