About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    Magnificent

by Dre on 6/4/24Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

James Taylor is a first class man and performer. Blessed to have seen him at the beautiful venue of The Hollywood Bowl. Their ADA access could use an upgrade but otherwise my favorite venue!!

James Taylor and his all star band

by Jak. on 6/4/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

James Taylor always is fantastic in concert. I never miss his concerts in the SLC area. My only issue was paying $50.00!for close parking. I am handicapped and have a handicapped plate, but didn't see anything that mentioned that I could park for free at USANA. It was like throwing swy $50.00 and I am on a fixed income. I just knew that I couldn't manage the walk on the uneven surfaces at USANA.

    Music was fantastic

by Jpickett on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

We had great seats and James Taylor was fantastic as were all the musicians in the Legends band. Communication with live nation is terrible. I never got an answer to my question about whether my reserved lawn seat came with chairs so I spent $40 I didn’t need to renting chairs but made 2 people very happy with the gift of chairs. The bathroom situation at the venue was disgusting and that was before the concert had even started.

    Great evening under the stars

by V from Hermosa on 6/3/24Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

James and his band went on stage around 8:00 pm. They played for 45 minutes when he took a 20 minute (that is what he said but it was more like 25-30 minute) intermission. Not sure why you need an intermission so close to the beginning of the concert but people went with it. He did all the hits which was great. His folks was a little raw. It sounded like he was fighting a cold. Regardless, for a man who is nearly 80, he brought the house down. It was sweet to see his son on tour with good ol' dad. The new American Express @amex entrance needs to be more defined and managed better. Those utilizing the entrance should be giving the option of grabbing the seat cushion verses having to wait in another line.

I don’t think the audience under stood the brilliant improvs by members of the band. They were so great. It’s amazing that James still has that great voiice with so many great songs. We totally loved the whole concert.

    Still My Favorite

by Issi on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

I‘ve been following JT since the late ‘60s and have never been disappointed in the many concerts I have been to. His music is ageless, he is a master of his art. I must confess that I was a little melancholy at this concert because I pray it won’t be the last one. No one comes close in my opinion to JT and his all-star band. He will always rank as my #1 artist even though I love and appreciate a variety of music and musicians. If/when he tours again I will be there!

    Great!

by GladLi on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

James Taylor was AMAZING! For an old dude, this was an incredible concert! No opening band, just a full two hours of James and his wonderfully talented band, including his son. OK, maybe his voice isn't as powerful and able to sustain notes like he used to, but it was pure joy to soak in the music and the talent! The old jokes were even good. Keep it up, James! The venue was good; it was worth paying for Premium Parking to be close. It was frustrating that we couldn't bring in our own lawn chairs, but the ones for rent were good, even for the large person in our party. This made it worth not sitting on the ground! All in all, we were SO GLAD we went!
