Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Jake Shimabukuro mind blowing ukulele extravagana

by HawaiianDredging on 6/10/13Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

in a beautifully restored retro theatre perfect for a cutting edge performance, Jake uses a retro instrument perfect for his mind blowing cutting edge performance. Jake's magically summons forth from 4 simple strings jimmy Handrix, Queen, Adle, George Harrison , Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, and King Kamehameha the Great. His stories of his newborn son endeared him even more to an audience thatt had already fallen for him. Besides having talent of Dumbledorian proportions, he is a genuinely decent man who appreciates his fans and seem to sincerely like our great state.

Amazingly talented and full of original creativity. Warm and passionate and personable. What else can one ask for!

  • Amazing performance

It's hard to believe that a ukelele can produce music like that. Jake Shimabukuro is a virtuoso. I doubt there is anyone else who can make a ukelele do what he does. Often his strumming and picking hand is moving so fast, you can't see it. A truly amazing and enjoyable performance.

My Aunt came out from California to visit and I surprised her with VIP tickets to see Jake. He was amazing and she had the BEST time! My co-workers teased me about going to a Ukulele concert but as soon as I get the video in and show them, they will be speechless! Jake is awesome on YouTube, but even more amazing in person!

It was a wonderful show, and Jake had a lot of energy, and demonstrated his skillfulness as well as his artistry. Personable. The Carolina Theater is beautiful, and comfortable.

A FANTASICALLY AWESOME concert! If you love the Ukulele, do not miss the chance to see JAKE in concert!

  • Jake Was Kickin'!

by Aikidow on 6/10/13Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

What a great evening! Jake was really into his playing and did some new things from his recent album. He played straight through with no break. The lights, however, were quite annoying. They would shine right at the audience's eyes blinding you and back lighting Jake. This was the first show I've seen with the lights. He did some talking but didn't introduce each song. I like when he tells the inspiration for the songs.

  • Exceeded all expectations

by Heywadsworth on 6/10/13Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Jake joked during the show about one of the nice things about being a concert uke player is that people generally come with low expectations. He is a pretty humble guy. I went to the show expecting to be entertained...I left the show feeling like I had seen something truly exceptional, unique and amazing. If you appreciate musicianship...nevermind that he is playing the lowly uke...you will appreciate this show. My 13 and 17 year-old kids were even enthralled!

  • JAKE THE "GOAT" UKE PLAYA

by BIGTYMA on 6/10/13Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Watching him play is like watching yo yo ma. The things he does with the UKE will blow your mind. Such a great personality as well. Worth every penny.

I loved Jake's concert! It was amazing the whole time. Great music selection and vibe. His brother also plays really well - I really enjoyed watching both play together. He should have gone back and played again at the end! Thank you!

  • Past, present and future!

by PoppyMiller on 4/26/13Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

Leo Kottke is made of gold. He can weave a yarn and make a guitar shimmer. Jake himself simmers and he never got the memo that a ukelele might not be cool. And we are fine with that, since outside of the uke box is a magical place to be. He's invented a new way of life because he went ahead and just imagined it. Past, present, and future all at the same time!

  • Amazing Jake

    by MrsCushion on 4/25/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Jake continues to make a small ukulele sound like a guitar, koto, drum, and harpsichord combined. Amazing amazing music. I think the light show was a little over the top, and I also do miss the old Jake in jeans and a t-shirt. Looks like a grown-up now.

  • Jake was amazing

    by raaone on 4/25/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was perfectly intimate for this amazing musician to perform his craft in front of an enthusiastic crowd. I've seen Jake live a few times but this was the first time my husband saw him and he was impressed by Jake's original songs as well as his covers. Using such a small instrument to make so many different sounds is amazing and it sounds like a whole band is on stage, not just one guy with a uke. A perfect performance!

  • Jake is awesome!

    by 6tokidoki9 on 4/25/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I have never been to the 6th & I Historic Synagogue, and I went to see Jake because the idea of a ukulele master was too novel to pass up. The venue was beautiful! And Jake...just left us in awe. He is amazingly talented and humorous and modest. The show was so fantastic that I had to buy his ukulele USB so that I could download a video of the performance I attended.

  • Incredible performance

    by SauntyJaunty on 4/25/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Jake killed it as usual. What a show. He is truly a gifted ukulele player; and is elevating the instrument to a level never previously reached by another artist. As a fan of Hawaiian music, Jake is a invigorating breath of fresh air to the genre. Not only does Jake perform extremely entertaining covers of well known songs (by the way, he performs all the musical portions, not just the strings lines) - but his original compositions are beautifully captivating. What continues to blow me away however, is how grounded and truly humble he is. Not only as an emerging artist, but as a person. Having seen him at the Nuuanu Botanical Gardens a few years ago; it was very nice to see him again at a larger venue, in front of a larger crowd - carrying that same appreciative sense of humility.

Fantastic show. Jake does amazing things with a ukulele and the venue was perfect for a one-man performance

  • Unbelievable!

    by Illwind on 4/25/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It is really astonishing to hear what Jake Shimabukuro does with a ukelele. He gets an amazing range of sounds from what I believed until the concert to be a limited range instrument. And he is a wonderful performer - warm and engaging. Don't pass up a chance to see him perform live!

  • He's AMAZING!

An incredible performer and composer. He makes sounds you would never expect from a ukelele. GO!

  • Leo and Jake: seasoned vs. noob virtuosity

by onetruesentence on 4/25/13Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

Last Sunday, at the Keswick, a sold out crowd watched a seasoned veteran make his guitar gently explode. Kottke casually makes the impossible look like an easy, almost offhanded afterthought. Kottke's picking and strumming are nothing short of dazzling, yet his quiet, wry narration belie the complexity of his abilities. Shimabukuro came out in the second half and shattered the thesis that musicianship of Kottke's level only comes with age. Shimabukuro makes that little, toy guitar called a ukelele sing, weep, shred, and, ultimately, soar. If I weren't sitting twenty feet away from him, I would have taken comfort in the assumption that it was all smoke and mirrors. But this was not the case. His original songs are lyrical gems, and his covers of Bohemian Rhapsody and My Guitar Gently Weeps are mind-blowers. The evening was reassuring that those of us who have been doing this for a few decades still "got it," but that these young ones are not just flash and trash. A night of wonderful, musical joy. I'm still riding the high, and isn't that why we all make the effort to view music live?
