Jake Shimabukuro on Tour
In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.
Jake Shimabukuro in Concert
Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.
Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

both of these gentlemen are amazing musicians, but leo's storytelling combined with his talent really stole the night for me.
I have only seen jake perform one other time, but every single time it is unforgettable. The way that he performs live can't be captured in his recordings. He is just overtaken by the power of his music, and is completely immersed in it and just creates a new experience every single time he's on stage. He is always so thankful and amazed by the response of the audience - one of the most humbly talented people I have ever seen perform. Leo Kottke was great - his guitar skills are fantastic, and his stories are rambling but always funny!
Leo Kottke opened the show with his fabulous fingerpicking, and Jake Shimabukuro closed it with ukelele pyrotechnics. I could have done without the light show - Jake can certainly mesmerize an audience without needing moving spotlights all over the stage - but the backdrop was very nice. The music created by both men was amazing, as I expected it to be.
An amazing live performance by an unforgettable musician. You will be blown away by the music he makes and sounds he elicits from his ukele. A unique performance by a MASTER!
Leo Kottke was extraordinary, as usual. A masterful musical performance which was completely enjoyable and punctuated by Leo's though provoking funny stories. . Jake Shimabukuro is unique and supremely talented.. His virtuoso performance on the ukulele was awe inspiring. The sounds he produces on his instrument are simply beyond description or comparison. Terrific!! Unfortunately, Jake's performance was diminished by a horribly distracting light show. The lighting/special effects were a combination of boring kinetic spinning light discs and rays of multi-colored moving lasers beams projected onto the walls and ceiling. There were also background lights of equally distracting high wattage displays. The bright lights shone directly into the eyes of many people in the audience which might account for so many people leaving the show well before the end. .
I bought these tickets for my husband as one of his Christmas presents. We have been watching Jakes career take off since we came across his You Tube video years ago. We knew from the moment we saw him that he was special! We both thoroughly enjoyed the show and to have seen Leo Kottke along with him was the icing on the cake! The only thing that would have made the show better was if they had done a tune together!
Leo was Good (as always).... Jake was totally amazing.... Great performance.... We look forward to seeing Jake again.
I came for Leo Kottke and wasn't disappointed. Just an incredible talent. Hasn't lost a beat or a note in the 30+ years I've been listening to him. And then there's Jake. What can I say? Simply blown away by his energy and enthusiasm (and talent). He has taken the Uke to new heights that others will certainly try to follow but it's hard to imagine anyone bringing more to the stage.
Jake did a great concert in Jacksonville. Sound was great and he was did a really animated show. It was a nice mix of songs as well, from some classics, through overdubbed rock to a number of original pieces. The only thing that distracted me was that the smoke, which was used to add effect to his light show filled the Florida Theatre.
He bends down and picks a cord off the stage floor, plugs it into the uke and joins the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. An amazing electric uke! A truly bravo performance.
One man, one instrument....I never thought I would enjoy a concert like this. And ukulele music???? I envisioned Don Ho and Tiny Bubbles - one of my mom's favorites :) My husband, a closet ukulele player, wanted to go. Being the loving wife that I am, and not wanting to disappoint, I got us tickets online and off we went to the Florida Theatre in downtown Jacksonville. From Jake's first song, I was hooked. It was a truly phenomenal concert. So eclectic. Such talent! And he plays with such joy!!! Thank you, Jake Shimabukuro~ You are incredible.
Great live show...Jake was incredible and had some great stories he shared with the crowd. A true musical prodigy in his own right.
A great concert in a great venue. He put on a fabulous show, and stayed after to meet his fans.
amazing skill and very personable talking to the audience-- would not hesitate to see him in concert
This was the second time I saw Jake live. The first was in an open air concert in downtown Charleston, SC last Spring. People flooded out of nearby buildings and the police had to block off the streets on all three sides of the courtyard where he was playing. People were mesmerized and just flooded the streets to hear him. The sound he gets out of 4 (and for one song just 3) strings is amazing. You find it hard to believe it's just one guy and a little ukelele. This concert was equally as amazing, though not under the stars and spanish moss of downtown Charleston. He also talks to the audenience and he seems so down to earth, humble and truly in amazement that he has become a sensation.
Great performance! definetly would love to see Jake again!
Jake FAR exceeded any expectations I had with his concert! His passion for the ukulele was so apparent, and he was really fun to watch!
Played lights out. My kids age 3 to 12 had a great time as well!
Jake S. was amazing! He made his Uke play like 10 different instruments! He played some of my favorite songs and even signed my Uke!!
Jake Shimabukuro is an amazing talent that becomes one with his instrument to produce sounds that cross many different field of music. He can take you to islands or take you to rock and roll haven. One has to truely see him play in order to believe that one, four string instument can make all the different sounds. I would recommend that everyone see his concert at least once, because after that you will be coming back for more that like I did.
