Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Awesome

That's an overused term but I am at a loss for superlatives. Jake is so obviously technically proficient, but that's the least important attribute. He becomes the music. You can see in his expressions that it is pure joy for him. I've heard "My guitar gently weeps" so many times, but each time it's different. The difference does not feel that it's coming out of boredom but finding something new in the composition at that very moment. Jake is like a jazz musician who is totally present with his music in the now. Words just fail to give honor to his artistry.

  • Jake was amazing! He makes the Ukulele speak!

by Bigsistahlin on 9/15/13John Anson Ford - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Jake's mastery of the Ukulele has raised the instrument's stature. The sounds that he makes from the ukulele rivals the classical guitar, the flamenco guitar, and the craziest rock guitar! He is in a lass of his own yet his on stage persona is so personable. I believe he has made a landmark change in our perception of ukulele music!

  • Jake no ka oi

by wabisabi24 on 9/15/13John Anson Ford - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

A perfect summer concert... Jake spread the "aloha spirit", the playing was a nice mixture of styles. Enjoyed the personal tidbits; the weather was outstanding beneath the LA sky, the venue was intimate, the metro park/ride was the best...free...fast, convenient,...organized... One of the best concerts I have attended in years.....classy!

Jake's performance was amazing and incredible to see live. The opening song was one of my favorites. I am so glad I got a chance to see him live. His skills and passion are evident in each performance and on another level. Such a sincere and humble guy too!

AMAZING!!! Jake was outstanding, we were mesmerized by the music and watching him play the heck out that ukulele!!!! Seats were great, 4th row from stage in the center, and the Ford amphitheater was the PERFECT venue for this concert, intimate, I love being outside, just perfect. This concert was an anniversary gift from us to us and it was an incredible event.

  • Jake Shimabukuro, a must see!

by wendyo96 on 9/15/13John Anson Ford - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

First of all, with exception to the stacked parking, the venue is amazing! Intimate, outdoors, you can bring in your own food and drink- rerminescent of a mini Hollywood Bowl. Jake: what a performance! I have a couple of his CDs and missed his performance in Cerritos last year, but I'm so glad I was able to see him this year! I dontvplay a musical instrument, but it looks and sounds like Jake can do extraordinary things with his ukulele that I have nervet heard before! From soft, mellow arrangements, to traditional Hawaiian songs to classic rock, everything he plays just amazed me. Throw his talent together with his charming sense of humor and it's a performance that I will attend whenever he's in town! *tip - park at the Universal park and ride and take the free Metro shuttle! Can't wait until he returns so I can see him again...

  • Jake is the real deal

by actorwhistler on 9/15/13John Anson Ford - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This is our third Jake concert. We have all of his CDs. That being said, this show really surprised us. Jake is not content to re-hash his shows. This one took us back to his electric gadget phase, brought us some new originals and a few old favorites. He is even more comfortable on mike, regaling us with stories of his youth, his young son and his life. As usual, he looks forward to meeting as many of the audience as wishes to meet him.

  • Jake Rocks!

    by OldSalt99 on 8/14/13Witherspoon Hall - OmahaRating: 5 out of 5

Themes ranged from east Indian to Van Halen with one underlying commonality: it rarely sounded like what most of us think of as ukulele music. The beauty and complexity of his performance was astonishing.

  • Jake Shimabukuro hits a home run in Omaha

by OldTucsonJack on 8/14/13Witherspoon Hall - OmahaRating: 5 out of 5

Jake is undoubtedly that greatest ukulele player in the world. His abilities are unbelievable and he makes you sit an wonder how he can possibly make so much amazing music from his little tenor ukulele. If you have an opportunity to see him live, don't pass it up!

I had no idea so much music could come from such a little instrument!!!! I overheard a well known person say "I would still be warming up!" Great show!

Jake is amazing. We have been to 7 of his concerts, and he just gets better and better all the time. Everyone should experience his talent and showmanship.

  • First time seeing Jake live!

by MissingMolokai on 6/17/13House of Blues New Orleans - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Spent my grade school years on Oahu at Kalihi Kai and moved back to the islands, Molokai in 2000. Jake was all over TV, he was winning awards etc. Never got the chance to see him there, but moved to New Orleans in 2008 and look who follows me here! The show was awesome, his showmanship is perfect and how he makes that little instrument sing like that I'll never understand. It was nice the show was in the more intimate Parish room. The crowd seemed very knowledgeable of his work which was a big surprise. My only negative is that I asked about 20 friends to come, but when they heard "ukulele" they passed. Still stuck in Tiny Tim mode. It made me miss home...

  • Jake --awesome as always

  • Jake Shimabukuro was fantastic!

by Rosepose on 6/10/13Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! What an amazing uke player. He needed no orchestra or backup or opening act. Just stepped out on stage with his ukulele and wowed the audience for almost two hours nonstop. We love ukuleles but had never heard one played like this before. Can't believe the amazing sound he created from that little four-string instrument. Terrific selection of songs too--appealed to a wide range of listeners and obviously the entire audience at this performance. Jake Shimabukuro puts on a wonderful show. (Three days later and we're still talking about his performance.). If you get the chance to see him, don't miss it.
