Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Jake puts on an amazing high energy show

Well I was skeptical about a guy with a ukelele but I have to say the show was amazing. Jake played nearly two hours straight with no breaks and just played his heart out. He is amazingly talented and reminded me of some great guitarists I had seen in the past. Al DiMeola came to mind. Just truly a talented artist who is humble and I could tell he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing.

Jake emits so much joy the entire time onstage....it's contagious, and you find yourself smiling ear to ear the whole time! His music is just incredible, and his passion is so apparent! My husband is a well-trained rock music guy, and puts Jake up there with Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix....he is an unbelievable musician, and watching him play is just an incredible experience!!! Everyone should see Jake life....once in a lifetime experience!

Jake is a phenomenon on the ukulele. You must hear him and see him to believe it!

  • Jake Shimabukuro was phenomenal!

by Anonymous on 11/3/15Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

We had heard about Jake through several friends who told us how good he was, so we thought we would enjoy him, but he far exceeded our expectations. From the minute he walked out onstage, to the minute he left, he threw every ounce of his energy and love for playing the ukelele into his performance. It's really amazing that someone can make that instrument with only 4 strings do the things he does with it. We will definitely go to see him again!

  • Amazing energy from Jake!

by Lizzie60 on 11/3/15Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro came onstage and began playing with explosive energy and enthusiasm which carried throughout the concert into his second encore! He gave an outstanding performance for each piece he selected--most from his new CD "Travels." The combination of virtuosity, musicianship, and showmanship awed the audience.

  • Jake is Great

by UkeBro on 8/25/15Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Demonstrated what amazing music can come out a ukulele. Showcased a spectrum of musical genre. (self-composed, classic Hawaiian, modern rock/pop).

  • We will return to hear Jake again

What Jake does takes a lot of skill and practice. We enjoyed the show very much.

  • Mesmorizing Performance by Jake!

by BChanelMusic on 7/15/15Saban Theatre - Beverly HillsRating: 5 out of 5

As a ukulele-player myself, I was ecstatic to get to finally see Jake in concert. I went to the concert all by myself and it was quite a moving and wonderful experience. Jake has an immediately noticeable kindred soul and fun personality. His music is full of story and emotional as well as delicate intricacy. I aspire to be able to play half as well as he does one day. If you can catch him when he's touring, I HIGHLY recommend it.

  • I laughed, I cried and I was blown away!

by CEfromLA on 7/14/15Saban Theatre - Beverly HillsRating: 5 out of 5

We didn't know a lot (OK, nothing) about Jake Shimabukuro before watching a documentary on Netflix, but liked what we saw, so I bought tickets for the Saban. I was not disappointed! We see a lot of live music but it is seldom that I have EVER seen an artist play with such unbridled JOY. From the opening notes to the closing, it was such a magical experience; I spent half the night with a goofy smile on my face and the other half with tears in my eyes and loved every minute of it.

  • Exceeded Our Expectations!

    by KathyC5 on 6/29/15Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The Jake Shimabukuro concert with The City Lights Orchestra exceeded our expectations beyond our wildest dreams! Jake's performance on ukelele was by far one of the most moving and amazing concerts I've ever had the pleasure to see. He truly made the ukelele sing with emotion, dynamic and tempo changes that enhanced each piece. His love of music was so apparent and his interaction with City Lights Orchestra and the audience was a credit to him as a professional. The City Lights Orchestra would be a joy to hear on their own, but the collaboration with Jake brought several genres of music and two tone qualities together in a nearly perfect performance. All the arrangements were amazing!

  • Jake totally rocks

by Mikatsuki on 6/28/15Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro is amazing with that ukulele - wow! What a nice guy, too, and so gracious. He was obviously excited to have the very talented City Lights Orchestra backing him, and they did a great job with only 4 hours rehearsal with him. I had a wonderful time, all smiles!

  • Ukulele god

    by meeee123 on 6/27/15Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake is a genius at what he does. Heartbreakingly beautiful, subtle, tender, explosive, exciting, extremely entertaining to watch, very interesting moments in between songs while he's talking about his experiences, humble, unassuming and happy-go-lucky. Will defy your expectations and broaden your appreciation and love for all things music. Dare I say again, he's a genius.

  • Jake was FANTASTIC!

    by Oldg6 on 6/27/15Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro was wonderful and with the band took on a whole new depth. His music displayed a variety they appealed to everyone. Never heard a ukulele played like that before. He was energetic and humorous. I will definitely plan on seeing him when he returns!!

Some of the orchestra piece with jake wasn't prepared well at all. The Queen song was so bad. Jake on the other hand was great. I would rather just hear him play solo. Please ask him to come back again!!!
