Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Super fun show. Jake is awesome.

Very entertaining. Fun listening. Great artist. You don't have to be a fan of the ukulele to enjoy this show.

  • Jake Shimabukuro rocked the house

by Foodell on 3/20/15Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Whatever you think cannot be played on a ukelele, Jake can do it and if it's fast he can do it at a faster tempo than you could ever imagine. Show is full of energy, variety, and musical surprises.

  • Jake is phenomenal!

This is the third time I have gone to one of his concerts. This one was much more "produced" with lights, more amp and the bass guitar. It was entertaining but I felt the bass overpowered the uke at times. The lights occasionally came on into the faces of the audience which was uncomfortable. Jake and the bass player obviously were totally enjoying playing together, which was great. It was a high energy, fun, amazing performance by a joyous musician. He is a "don't miss" performer. Seems very likable as a person, too.

  • A ukelele?

Who would have known you could get so many amazing sounds from an instrument as simple as a ukulele.

Amazing performance in an amazing venue! The audio quality at the Uptown is always superb.

  • Uke should not miss a Jake show

    by Gadabout47 on 3/20/15Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro was totally amazing from the first strum to the last bow. No opening act, no intermission, we were spellbound again by this amazing young man. Heartfelt and emotional, this performance was recorded and made available at the theater. This should be the way all concerts operate. To have your performance recorded and available in thumb drive form is outlandish and truly cool. A fine show and a treat for all ages to see such artistry.

  • Dynamic, high energy show

by JRRRRRRRRR on 3/20/15Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 4 out of 5

The performance was fantastic, did not know a ukulele could be played like that. However, I had no previous conceptions of Jake Shimabukuro and was expecting traditional Hawaiian ukulele music. As far as the show, I would turn down the bass as it sometimes overpowered Jake's play.

  • Love Jake

Reallllllly love Jake Shimabukuro! Truly a gifted artist. Played nonstop either solo or with his bass friend. A must see for anyone - this is no ordinary Uke player. Truly extraordinary.

Can't say how awesome the concert was, from the first opening band to Pure Heart to Jake's solos, amazing music and energy.

Abosolutely a concert to remember. The 2-1/2 hours of continuous music was captivating and nostalgic. Glad to see 'Pure Heart" with Jon and Lopaka back for this one performance. Hope we'll see their performance again next year.

  • Jake and friends was amazing!

The reunion of Pure Heart was unforgettable! It would be nice for them to do it every now and again and maybe now that some water has passed under the bridge and they've played together this past Friday will make it easier for them to play together in the future. Jake is wonderful - every time I see him he gets better. What he can play on the ukulele inspires people who play the ukulele want to play it even if we can't compare. Jake has really opened the eyes of people all over the world to how the ukulele can sound. I hope for many more years of listening to Jake!

  • Jake and a couple thousand friends concert.

    by rwo123 on 12/8/14Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - HonoluluRating: 5 out of 5

The Concert was just amazing... Jake Played with two of his old groups, for the first time in years!!!! no one missed a beat... He also played with a couple of friends, a drummer and an eight string Bass player... threw in a couple of tunes by himself, and what more could you ask for. With front row seats in front of the speakers, it wasn't deafening ... just PERFECT

I CAN'T BELIEVE WE GOT TO WATCH PURE HEART!!! Side Order Band was amazing! Pure Heart never sounded better! It's like their chemistry never left. Their stories were really touching and the music really touched my heart, just in time for the holidays!

  • An amazing display of talent!

Wow!!! What a great night of music. So much talent on the stage. Jake was his amazing self, but so was everyone else. This was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. No special effects, just a whole lot of talent.

I've seen Jake play over 12 years ago in Mt. View CA, he was an amazing musician then and was pleasantly surprised he has grown tremendously. It was also quite monumental to see Pure Heart reunite after 15 years. Overall a great entertaining concert as well. I will definitely make this an annual concert to attend!
