We originally saw this a couple of years ago on Broadway. The cast at Toby's did an excellent job bringing it to the dinner theater.
The voices, particularly the female cast and the Piragua guy, were exceptional. The choreography was very impressive, and the set was very well done. The dinner buffet was delicious, and having the show unfolding in the round made for a very intimate viewing experience. I would absolutely recommend this show.
The show was great as expected, the price of admission includes the buffet dinner with Deseret! You won't be disappointed with these tickets!
I wanted to see this musical after dancing to one of the songs in a dance class and finding out it was on Broadway once and never produced again. It was really good. Good actors, dancers singers and choreography. Of course, theater in the round is always cool making you feel like you are part of the play. My husband took me for my birthday and even he commented on how good it was. The whole story line of family within a community was touching and well expressed. Wouldn't it be great if we could solve all our problems with song and dance?
WOW... Very well done! I never saw or even heard of the "In the Heights". It was a great production, great performances, and the VOICES!!! Just Great. As for the dinner buffet is was just OK. Nothing great, but the "service" from the cast members was nice!
If you didn't get a chance to see this production, you have no idea what you missed. I loved it so much I saw it twice. Being Latino growing up in NYC really made me relate to the ambiance Miranda created through this musical. However, you don't have to be a native Spanish speaker in order to have enjoyed this show. If it ever comes back to BW, I'll be in the first row for a third time!
I came with a 9 month pregnant woman and felt so bad that she had to sit in the U of I Assembly hall and sweat for 2+ hours. The air must have been broken- it was at least 90 degrees in there. I have a degree in musical theater and was a professional, touring actress before having a family and I must say that I was disappointed in the performance. Lack luster energy, the actress who played Nina couldn't sing, and unimpressive sets. I was sad that it was my friend's first exposure to a professional touring company. Sad, too because the music and original cast of In the Heights was so phenomenal. Maybe we'll blame the heat?
In the Heights is a good solid piece of entertainment and the cast did it up good in the performance my wife and I saw in Tucson. The trouble is with the show itself. It has no real showstopper songs and the ending altho poignant is just the ending. I've seen the show twice, once on Broadway and once here and I must say that the productions were both high caliber. For me tho', the show itself is just so-so.
There was a little bit of something for everyone--rap, singing, dancing, comedy, drama. I really enjoyed this musical!
Play was entertaining but lacked a real plot. The characters were realistic.
I was surprised at how hard it was to understand some of the songs and dialog. The music was boring DVD the characters were undeveloped.
Great dancing and at the same time an informative musical about the people In The Heights!
I just LOVED the entire performance. The acting, dancing, singing - a great production all around. Enjoy the updeat music and have a great time.
There was something in it for everyone...something that each person in the family could relate to. The show was upbeat, yet, there were some sad scenes. It was good for the soul. I was surprised that my 22 year old son enjoyed it. I think it was the rapping that kept him tuned in. Along with the fact that it was a "Latino" family. It expressed our culture (i.e. family closeness and sticking together through the good, bad and the ugly).
I treated my cousin to the show--it was a last minute decision and we did not know anything about it entering the theater. We were both pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it was.
The talent in this show was exceptional! It's unfortunate the sound system made it difficult to hear the majority of the show. Despite that it was a show that captured your attention from the very first moment, and kept you capitvated until the end.
This musical is great. It has an amazing story with some really upbeat songs. The person playing Abuela does a fantastic job(even meets the greatness of the original Broadway Abuela) as does Usnavi. Nina's voice and stature don't really fit the part. Her songs, which are usually powerful and emotional, are lacking in her thin voice. It is definitely a must see musical.
Moving and musical. Rapping is usually not my cup of tea but this was both appropriate and advanced the story line. A unique approach to a changing neighborhood in the city. Dreams and reality meet and hope remains. Great cast with great voices.
I loved this show. It felt like you were there in the streets with them and the rapping was awesome!
