    Was an average production

by jvmurf on 1/17/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was an average production of a Tony award winning play. It seemed rather high schoolish in it's delivery and the set was very uneventful. The dancing was great, but great voices didn't necessarily go along with the dancers. I got Hot Tix pricing, so I am pleased with the price I paid.

    Two thumbs up!

by jobeylean on 1/17/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Enjoyed the show. Provided good insight into the Latino life in New York and the problems and culture that are pervasive in that culture. The music in the play was very good as it had an untraditional musical flavor.

Enjoyable light entertainment with a very weak plot but great dancing and singing. Better then I expected.

    In The Heights

by Eacy on 1/17/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was a well-done, well-written, well-executed musical; drama. I'm particularly thrilled because my son, who is a very hip 20-something, and I, a 57-year-old, were at the performance together and both of us equally enjoyed it! Great job done by all involved! The Oriental Theatre staff was also very accommodating and one could tell enjoyed their job experience.

We really enjoyed In the Heights, great characters and story, highlighted by talented dancers and singers. Benny's voice was incredible, loved him.

Many of the words were hard to understand. I kept waiting for some kind of plot or main idea but there didn't seem to be one. Talented artists, just not an interesting story and not great music.

    Great 20th Anniversary Night!

by Erniedog on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at Maya's in Oak Park and then this musical was the highlight of the night(well almost). Anyway, we completely enjoyed the story line as well as the incredible voices of the cast and the music that went along with them. Bravo!!!

Hard to clearly hear most words

by EXERZIZE on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Not knowing what the musical was about (the program had absolutely no hints), we were disappointed because the "rapping" music was clearly hard to understand and when some of the performers sang, it got to the point where they were "screaming" trying to reach high notes. The choreography was outstanding, but it did not carry the musical. Too bad.

    Amazing Heights

by sosatisfied on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I saw the Broadway company of "In the Heights" in 2008 as well as the first tour cast, and the OBCR is on constant rotation on my iPod, so I certainly knew and loved the show rather than coming to this performance with completely fresh eyes. However, the wild card is always the particulars of the production itself: Is the cast up to par for the challenging material? Does the translation of the set and orchestra work in the venue? Will the audience play their role and go along for the ride? I'm thrilled to say yes to all of these and more. I was incredibly impressed by this cast, especially the talent, heart and energy they brought to their roles. The crowd was very engaged, the music as strong as ever. I couldn't have been happier. It's a must-see.

In the Heights, good for a musical

by DoomDr on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Let me begin by saying that I am not a Broadway musical fan. I went to this show because a friend is in the orchestra. That said, this was a pretty good show. The book was the predictable sappy musical story, but the music, singing, and dancing were all tight and energetic. I won't remember the songs, but I was entertained while watching. Given my usual response to musicals, this counts as a ringing endorsement.

    Dancing Wonderful; Story Line Weak

by BlueHydrangea on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Parts of this were wonderful but I found the story line(s) weak. I also don't like the operetta style where most of the dialog is sung. I like an old-fashioned musical. Talk talk talk. Burst into song. talk talk talk. Another song.

I didn't expect or like all the rapping in the beginning. Gradually, there were different rhythms. Cast was very exhuberant.

    Awesome is putting it lightly!

by FanOfUsnavi on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was my second time seeing the performance and I have to say this time around was the best! The cast was a lot better than the first cast that came to Chicago. The acting/singing was outstanding!! Some performances actually brought tears to my eyes and it was one of those things you never want to end! Bravo!! I will definitely catch this show every time it comes back!!

    Vibrant portrayls and dancing

by Dwack on 1/16/12Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Really enjoyed this production. All the characters were portrayed with conviction. The actor who played the main character Usnavi looked a lot like the original Broadway actor, who also was the composer and lyrisist. I liked how the dancing was incorporated into the action. My one negative was that the theater itself was ice cold throughout the whole performance, as if the heat had been turned on just before the house was opened. It never warmed up.
