Houston Dynamo History

The Dynamo compete in Major League Soccer in the Western Conference. The team was established in 2005 when the Anschutz Entertainment Group — owners of the San Jose Earthquakes — moved the team to Houston after failing to find a new stadium in San Jose. The change of scenery proved to be a success, as the Dynamo won the MLS Cup in 2006 and 2007, their first two seasons. They were runners-up in 2011 and 2012, and were also Supporters' Shield runners-up in 2008. The Dynamo won the U.S. Open Cup in 2018, and again in 2023.

The Dynamo's main rival is FC Dallas, who they play in the Texas Derby, which was established in 2006. Each game, the winner of the Derby gets "El Capitán," a replica 18th-century cannon. The Dynamo are also intra-league rivals with Sporting Kansas City.

Dominic Kinnear was the Dynamo's first head coach and led them from 2005 until 2014, bringing the team their two championships. They are currently coached by Ben Olsen.

by RojoMayor on 10/25/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

A fun filled evening was had by all participants of the Dynamo vs. Galaxy game, from the fans, to the show and to the game. I will remember the last game played at Robertson for many years to come!

This was a disappointment with LA Galaxy not playing all their star players, ie..Beckham and Donavon.. Game was Ok with a 3-1 win and 2 nice goals, but still...2nd time in 4 years that I go to event and no star players show up ...

    Better than I excepted

by Bibibam on 9/21/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

I enjoyed the game but the service at the consession stand I visited on the southeast corner of the stadium was terrible and needs alot of improvement. The person who waited on me removed the cap on the water bottle I bought. She said it was because fans throw the bottle tops onto the field. I noticed someone else who was sitting a few rows over with the exact same water bottle with teh cap on. Go figure.

    My First Pro Soccer Game

by TacoSalad on 9/7/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

Until that night, watching soccer on television was boring. After biting the bullet, I went to see my first pro soccer game with a friend of mine. It was one of the greatest sporting experience I have ever witness. The Dynamo fans are the best I have ever seen and heard. Great sporting action and high energy from the fans. I look forward to seeing another game!

    General Feedback

by KevinJG on 9/6/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

This was the first Houston Dynamo game my son and I attended. Since I was not familiar with the stadium and I wanted to take my son to the game for his birthday, I purchased more expensive tickets to ensure good seats. The seats were indeed good, on the 50 yard line. They were comfortable and the field was easy to see. We had a good time and Dynamo won! A couple of things took away from the game for my son and me. One is the Dynamo fans in the end zone seats. The ENTIRE game they were having a party making a huge racket. I understand that when you attend a game there will be lots of fan noise, especially when things get exciting on the field but I don't see how the fans in the end zone actually watched any of the game. It was remiscent of the obnoxious noise during the world cup in South Africa with those vuvuzela horns. My request to fans - have a good time but give the noise a rest sometimes. Another negative was I could not keep up who was committing which penalties on the field (neither could my son, the soccer player). Unfortunately, no information was provided on the big screen display on the score board. I don't believe much was said over the loud speakers but I could be wrong as the sound quality (especially with the noise) was not great. Perhaps the new stadium will help. Overall, we had a good time and I would not mind attending another game.

    Would like a full refund.

    by SoccerDad1028 on 9/6/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

Extremely disappointed with this event. Such horrible officiating and poor organization of the event made me feel cheated and greatly embarrassed for purchasing these tickets for my Family. It seemed the game was vastly one sided and we felt we had been robbed of our $40.00. I expect the Houston Dynamo to release an apology for the fans and how the evening transpired. After being a dynamo fan since it's formation, I will no longer be attending these events.

    NO VERY GOOD

    by J1968 on 9/6/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

I been rayado fan for 20 years. This was not friendly game at all, the referee should not be the attraction of the game, Game went out of control , I blame the bad referee criteria. Next time they should pick a non local referee (maybe from CANADA or south america). Non respect from either parties for national songs. Same thing happen in 2009 , Is this become a soccer war between Houston and Monterrey ? . Monterrey has a lot to lose on this friendly games, players can get injures and the soccer world club in Japan is on December 2011 , Also they have more games to play on Mexico league. too risky for the Monterrey players. I bought 4 tickets (almost 50 USD each) and I left with my family before the second half starts, very disappointed , next time I used the MC Donnals deal (54.99 for 4 tickets with meals included).

    The ref was a disaster

by StripeFan on 9/6/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

It is unbelievable that they send to this type of games this level of ref. He was the worst I have ever seen in a soccer match. This was supposed to be a "friendly" match, where there where three objectives: 1) Dynamo gets practice and can test players and keep rhythm. 2) Rayados gets to practice, test moves, and helps maintain soccer rhythm. 3) Fans have fun and enjoyed a good game. All the problems can clearly be blamed on the ref, and he should be instructed to: Keep the players aligned. Try to end the game with 11 VS 11. He should never have a game again. Too bad for the teams and the fans.

The event was very fun. The venue was small and attendance was somewhat low, but what that resulted in was a sense of camaraderie and basically there wasn't a bad seat in the stadium. I definitely plan on going again.

    First MLS game

by daretu on 8/22/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

Nice experience for the most part. Nice treat for the VIP tickets, would have been nice to have been given the information about the extras with the ticket purchase rather than having to figure it out myself. Game was great, but some fans started getting too vocal. Thankfully police on site quickly settled them down, but not something I'd like to have to have happen around me on a routine basis.

    Dynamo were good

    by SoccerSmart08 on 7/23/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

The Dynamo game vs. Sporting Kansas City was a great experience. Although the Dynamo received 2 red cards and conceded a goal in the 90th minute, I thought they played a great game. I was amazed by Brad Davis' free kick goal. The fans were always cheering loudly, and I ended up cheering right along with them. I honestly think the fans impacted the game tremendously.
