Bud Not Buddy is an excellent adaptation of a beautiful story. Bud is an orphan tossed from home to home. He finally has had enough and sets off to find his father--here-to-fore unknown. This adaptation is an excellent example of Narrative or Chamber Theatre. The ensemble cast comes in and out of the multiple characters including much of the books beautiful narrative. The young audience responded --sometimes with laughter and sometimes with tears as Buddy faces various trials and adventures. When he finally finds the person on his flyer--and that person rejects him--we all hold our collective breaths. I recommend this play for families with children in 2nd or 3rd grade and older. I also recommend reading the book.
Funny skits...byob....great place! If you're looking for cost efficient fun and I do mean FUN!!! Go! It's different and you won't regret it!
Well written, well cast with very good acting. I can imagine these are actual situations the writter actually experienced. Well worth attending.
I have seen better shows at Second City. Parts we great and then other parts were just mediocre and still others I just didn't get. Some of the show just wasn't funny. With that being said, the improv at the end was quite funny and the actors are very talented.
I love the plays of G. B. Shaw, and feel that they do not get produced often enough in the Chicago area. This excellent production should get others agreeing with me on this. The sets, acting, pacing are all really good and keep you entertained while making you think about life and society and love and . . .
This is a great family show! You don't have to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy it, but you need some knowledge to understand the references. Very funny and fun for everyone. The actors do a great job - good rapport with each other. I highly recommend it!
This show was a seriously good value. All 3 performers were very good and the show it self was simply hilarious. Barats timing and conviction really took the show to the next level. Only complaints I have would be that the Annoyance has no tiered seating, so view-planes were not great past the first couple rows and their beer selection/lack of tap are definite areas for improvement. Otherwise, solid production and if you get a chance to see this show or any of Barats other work/improvs, just do it, you will be glad you did!
Pretty mediocre. Somehow the offbeat cab stories are supposed to charm us with their novelty and disguise the fact that there is no real story or main character. Why was this such a long-running show?
We were extremely impressed with the show, which tells its stories in a very different way (in sum, more effectively) than could've been conveyed in a video documentary, a news article, a radio documentary, or any other medium. It showcased the talent of a cast of malleable bodies, faces, and voices stretching themselves to portray the real-life people they interviewed in a convincing and authentic but not overly caricaturing way. I was bent over with embarrassed laughter a few times (although this was not a show where the subject matter lent itself to unrestrained gut-level hilarity). Most of the time I felt appropriately somber and reflective, as well as being appropriately enraged more than a few times. Finally, although I certainly sensed "good guys" and "bad guys" in the "plot," I felt that the Waltzing Mechanics did a remarkable job of presenting multiple arguments and viewpoints. I was left thinking and reflecting and chewing and digesting.
We were very disappointed in this show, it really was not very funny which was shocking based on it being a Second City performance. There was literally no audience participation except for one skit and it was pretty lame. I am glad that we paid half price through HOT TIX because even at $20 per ticket (with fees), it was not worth the cost.
Little Women is a wonderful story that I think everyone should see. The acting in this play was very good. My only dislike was that the play's second act felt and was very lengthy.
Price of tickets way to high for such a show. The actors were good, but sometimes a little too silly.
A can't miss break for the holidays. Wonderful talented cast. Just what I needed to end a hectic holiday season! There is some improv so each show is different. I love Second City. The cost of admission is worth it! I can't wait to see it again next year!
This is a perfect play for the Redtwist Theatre because it REALLY does have a red "twist" at the end. I found it very interesting and funny although it holds a dark and mysterious plot. The acting was competent and convincing although I think it would help if the cues were more than tight--a Cary Churchill--talking over each other kind of tight. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's definitely NOT for kids under 17!
I can't say enough about the people at Raven Theatre. Christmas Goose was a fun evening for the entire family. Raven Theatre is on my must-do list every time I visit Chicago.
Combination of history, current events. Heartfelt, fabulous!!!!
Like a step back in time; very intimate and authentic. Great fun!! It will become a new Christmas tradition for us.
Impeccable conception of the Dickens' short story and endearing presentation at City Lit Theater! Highly recommended! As in "A Christmas Carol," the spiritually blind become sighted, but, in addition in this Dickens' offering, a physically blind person's spiritual sightedness provides a glorious high point in the performance. The moment soars! Children, age 10 or older, would enjoy the performance too, although they would need to be told that some characters play more than one part. The performers' hats provide the clues as to their characters.
It was a good idea. But I had the impression there would be more interaction with the audience. Didn't feel like there was a lot of improv. Disappointed it was okay.
