About

In the years between 2018's BAMBI and LP3, Minneapolis' Hippo Campus -- made up of vocalist/guitarists Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker, drummer Whistler Allen, bassist Zach Sutton, and trumpeter DeCarlo Jackson -- has grown up and into itself. Although the five-piece has been friends since middle school and put out a number of studio releases since its inception, it's the new record, LP3, that's the most honest portrait of who Hippo Campus is. It's also a study in the nuances of growing up -- coming to terms with mortality, the confusing journey of sexuality, bottoming out, seeing decisions from the night before in the harsh morning light; finding your identity as a person and as an artist -- how that can be a collision of elation and shame, painful and joyful all at once.

Over the last few years, the Hippo universe has expanded outward. Luppen and Stocker both put out solo records as Lupin and Brotherkenzie respectively, and the two also teamed up with Caleb Hinz to put out the debut Baby Boys record while DeCarlo Jackson founded, and collaborated with multiple bands around the Twin Cities, including DNM, Arlo, and FPA. Navigating solo projects and new dynamics and the spotlight alone is humbling, bringing up new insecurities and defense mechanisms. It was challenging in its own way to branch outside of Hippo -- and it made the eventual return to the project feel like coming home.

LP3 is, then, their strongest and most complete work yet -- a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. It looks at how growing up can just feel like something that's always moving past you when you're trying to grab a hold of it; it's a push-and-pull of letting go or holding tighter -- and figuring out what matters the most. Through cinematic, sonic clarity, LP3 is a sweeping account of courage and tenacity; tender-hearted stumbling that leads you on the right path after all.

    AMAZING!!

by Lil on 5/12/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Hippo Campus put on such an awesome show! Hands down one of the best concerts I have ever been to! (and that says a lot considering I’ve been to a lot of shows and set high standards when it comes to live performances) I also purchased the VIP package and meeting the band was great! I realized they not only make good music, but they’re fun, down-to-earth, and all together made the experience super personable! The Knitting Factory (Boise) is an amazing little venue. No matter where you are in the venue, you feel super close to the stage and never have a bad view. The staff is super friendly and helpful as well!

    best night of my life

    by Kay on 5/10/23

I went to the Knitting factory in Boise to see these guys, and THEY WERE FANTASTIC!! I cried and laughed and smiled and it was great. I’m gonna try and get tickets to Philly or Columbus now because I just CANNOT get enough!!! The opening act, Charly Bliss, was also fantastic and I’ll definitely be listening to more of their music. The venue itself was smaller than I thought but still awesome because it made the concert more intimate. I was up against the railing in GA and there was no pushing or pressure on me since I was up front, so a respectful crowd as well. Cant wait to see the guys again!

    BEST NIGHT EVER

by MJ on 5/8/23The Van Buren - Phoenix

The Hippo Campus (with Charley Bliss) was a fantastic concert. This was my first concert, so I had no idea what to expect, but it was nothing but good things at the end of the night. All the "horror stories" of what to expect from a ground floor concert didn't happen. The crowd wasn't pushy and the band interacted with us. They put on such a great performance song after song. Even at the end of the night, when the crowd chanted for "one more song!" the band came back on stage and upheld the same energy, playing for us a final and absolutely perfect number. I expected a lot worse on the venue because of the area it is in, but it is actually a great venue with a very clean interior. Definitely would attend concerts here again.

Not as Good as the past

by AJ on 5/7/23The Van Buren - Phoenix

I’ve seen Hippo Campus live at the Van Buren 4 times now. The first time I saw them, they were on fire. The set was polished, the vocals were great, and everything blended perfectly. Honestly, this was the worst performance from them I’ve seen. Between the shorty auto tune to the lead vocals overpowering everything else, I was a bit embarrassed to have brought my friend with me. I love the band and the new music they’ve produced but the vocals lately have seen a massive downgrade. Between the flair that’s trying to be added or maybe just the volume it doesn’t feel nearly as good as the albums or even past live performance. Best of luck. I’ll be back next year.

    Life Changing

by Elizabeth on 5/7/23The Van Buren - Phoenix

I’ve never been to the van buren but the venue is absolutely beautiful and has such a fun charm to it. Charly Bliss was an amazing opener too! I’ve never heard of them but now a few songs are on my playlist because she has an unforgettable stage presence. Hippo Campus was great as always with an unforgettable setlist that makes me so excited to go again this week!

    otherworldly experience

by serenity on 5/7/23The Van Buren - Phoenix

hippo campus concerts will never not be the most perfect, transcending, fulfilling, euphoric drugs-without-the-drugs experience you can ever hope to be a part of and witness. much love to these boys as well as the van buren and staff. my only complaint is of the venue itself in regards to how they let people in. it shouldn’t be right that people who got to the venue minutes before doors open get to be huddled up next to people who waited 6+ hours in a giant blob of a mess right outside the doors. especially when those ppl paid good money for a vip experience. i’ve been to hippo campus concerts in other states (washington, north carolina, california) and those venues have their system in a much more organized manner. everyone is let in in a single file line in the order they arrived and that’s how it should be here in phoenix, too. no hate for the boys, they put on stellar performances every single time and never disappoint. the van buren, however, definitely has room for improvement.

    SOOOO GOOD

by Kenzie on 10/24/22The Ritz - Raleigh

Hippocampus is such a good band to see live! I had a great time. I was worried I didn't know enough of their songs to enjoy the show, but I knew almost all of the ones they played, it turned out! Highly recommend, and DeCarlo is sooo good on trumpet. Great vibes for a great night.

    Longtime fan

    by Ma[XXX] on 10/24/22XL Live - Harrisburg

Hippo Campus shows are like wine… they keep getting better. I saw them at XL Live in Harrisburg, much smaller than the Fillmore in Philly earlier this year, and it was phenomenal. Chai as an opener is also just so good. Love ya!

    Fervid for Hippo Campus

by JPofGR on 10/18/22GLC Live at 20 Monroe - Grand Rapids

Hippo Campus has an ability of wonder to connect to their audience. The 20 Monroe venue is a an enjoyable venue. Sat in the lower mezz and the seats were perfect, overlooking the floor full of Fervid Hippo Campus fans. Tight musicianship playing great music. Vocals were emotionally precise.
