About

In the years between 2018's BAMBI and LP3, Minneapolis' Hippo Campus -- made up of vocalist/guitarists Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker, drummer Whistler Allen, bassist Zach Sutton, and trumpeter DeCarlo Jackson -- has grown up and into itself. Although the five-piece has been friends since middle school and put out a number of studio releases since its inception, it's the new record, LP3, that's the most honest portrait of who Hippo Campus is. It's also a study in the nuances of growing up -- coming to terms with mortality, the confusing journey of sexuality, bottoming out, seeing decisions from the night before in the harsh morning light; finding your identity as a person and as an artist -- how that can be a collision of elation and shame, painful and joyful all at once.

Over the last few years, the Hippo universe has expanded outward. Luppen and Stocker both put out solo records as Lupin and Brotherkenzie respectively, and the two also teamed up with Caleb Hinz to put out the debut Baby Boys record while DeCarlo Jackson founded, and collaborated with multiple bands around the Twin Cities, including DNM, Arlo, and FPA. Navigating solo projects and new dynamics and the spotlight alone is humbling, bringing up new insecurities and defense mechanisms. It was challenging in its own way to branch outside of Hippo -- and it made the eventual return to the project feel like coming home.

LP3 is, then, their strongest and most complete work yet -- a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. It looks at how growing up can just feel like something that's always moving past you when you're trying to grab a hold of it; it's a push-and-pull of letting go or holding tighter -- and figuring out what matters the most. Through cinematic, sonic clarity, LP3 is a sweeping account of courage and tenacity; tender-hearted stumbling that leads you on the right path after all.

    Amazing Night

by Meehan98 on 3/6/17Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Although general admission is a cool concept, the 3 hours of standing around waiting was horrible (hence the missing star for seats). Besides that, the performance was wonderful! I felt the music in my soul, we were in a perfect spot and Hippo Campus was very energetic. Would 100% see them again.

    My first concert was unforgetable

by GingerTea99 on 3/6/17Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

I've been really into Hippo Campus for the longest time and I can honestly say that their performance live is an entirely new level of talent. I've never been to a concert before, but I do know that sometimes bands and singers aren't as good live as when they're recorded, which is fine because usually the fact you just got to see them is enough. BUT Hippo Campus was phenomenal!! They were so alive on stage and I could feel the emotion in each of their songs. The crowd was awesome too, there was this sort of infectious energy that really bonded all of us and the boys together. The boys are also incredibly nice and friendly people, very open in face to face interactions. They removed that sort of barrier bands and fans have and I really enjoyed that. I would do anything to see them live again, it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life that I will remember forever.

So energetic, down to earth, & fun!

by Anonymous on 6/25/16The Hollow - Albany

I attended this Hippo Campus concert while on a Tinder date, during which I ran into my ex. It was awkward and uncomfortable, to say the least. BUT through all the discomfort, Hippo Campus was great!! They sounded just as good, if not better than their recordings, and the interactions with the audience were good-natured and humorous. Thank you, Hippo Campus, for turning a situation that would have otherwise been awful, into a lovely musical experience. Will definitely see again!

I went to this concert while visiting some friends. I had never heard of this band before my friends mentioned them, but I went along. The band was great! Of course I didn't know any of the songs, but they were easy to jam to. The band was full of energy and good performers. I would see them again.

This concert was 200x better than I could have imagined. Venue is so small and intimate that it made the concert even better. The music was phenomenal, wish I could go back and relive this night!!

    Rock stars

by Joeyjojo on 6/18/16Deluxe at Old National Centre - Indianapolis

These young men are the real deal. I saw them in Kentucky 7 months ago and they were just as good. They put the music and playing well first. Extremely talented and are being rewarded for their hard work evidenced by the much larger crowd. See them now so you can say "I knew them when". They are earning their success the old way - one gig at time and word of mouth from people who see them live. The best part of seeing them now is that they play every original song from both EPs and a few new tunes too. "Way it goes" and "Tuesday" sounded like the older tunes, but a little more mature. Go figure, they're growing up in the spotlight. Fantastic show. If they keep this up, they will be selling out arenas before they're 25 years old.

    Will always remember this show

by frenchkale on 6/13/16Bowery Ballroom - New York

They were simply amazing. We were all singing along and dancing. The live performance was so much better than just listening to them on my phone. I can't wait for their new album!

Hippo Campus were unbelievably amazing. It's the most fun I've had at a concert; the energy in the band was contagious and if you like the way they sound recorded, you'll love their sound live; it's something that's just so unique and so intoxicating that it is something that must be experienced by anyone that appreciates meaningful, uplifting and fun music. Highly recommend! LOVE HIPPO CAMPUS!

    Hippo Campus in Atlanta

by SkaterCater on 5/25/16Masquerade - Atlanta

Just saw Hippo Campus in Atlanta on Sunday night. The show was scheduled for the Thursday prior, but due to illness they had to cancel and they made up for tenfold, sharing with us some new tracks and perfect renditions of their most popular songs. Their vocals are as good live as they sound in their studio produced music; the group is tight instrumentally with each member adding to their special sound. Their stage presence is strong and vibrant and yet there was a comfortable connection with the audience. I look forward to future work from the band and watching them rise to huge fame.

    Hungry Hungry for more Hippos!

by mollsmcgow on 11/20/15Madison Live! - Covington

This was my 2nd time seeing this new, charming, & upcoming band from Minnesota. Though the venue was seemingly smaller than they've now become aquatinted with playing in, they still attempted to exude the same youthful energy and perfectly melodic sounds that they are ever so known for. If you're looking for a great show to dance, sing to your hearts content, and connect with the band afterwards, Hippo Campus will give you the show that you want!

    Hippo Campus Killed It

    by k80krame on 11/20/15Madison Live! - Covington

These guys brought even more energy and originality to the stage than the first time I saw them. Maximum satisfaction to watch this band rock out, and dance along with them. Definitely worth driving a bit to see!
