In the years between 2018's BAMBI and LP3, Minneapolis' Hippo Campus -- made up of vocalist/guitarists Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker, drummer Whistler Allen, bassist Zach Sutton, and trumpeter DeCarlo Jackson -- has grown up and into itself. Although the five-piece has been friends since middle school and put out a number of studio releases since its inception, it's the new record, LP3, that's the most honest portrait of who Hippo Campus is. It's also a study in the nuances of growing up -- coming to terms with mortality, the confusing journey of sexuality, bottoming out, seeing decisions from the night before in the harsh morning light; finding your identity as a person and as an artist -- how that can be a collision of elation and shame, painful and joyful all at once.
Over the last few years, the Hippo universe has expanded outward. Luppen and Stocker both put out solo records as Lupin and Brotherkenzie respectively, and the two also teamed up with Caleb Hinz to put out the debut Baby Boys record while DeCarlo Jackson founded, and collaborated with multiple bands around the Twin Cities, including DNM, Arlo, and FPA. Navigating solo projects and new dynamics and the spotlight alone is humbling, bringing up new insecurities and defense mechanisms. It was challenging in its own way to branch outside of Hippo -- and it made the eventual return to the project feel like coming home.
LP3 is, then, their strongest and most complete work yet -- a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. It looks at how growing up can just feel like something that's always moving past you when you're trying to grab a hold of it; it's a push-and-pull of letting go or holding tighter -- and figuring out what matters the most. Through cinematic, sonic clarity, LP3 is a sweeping account of courage and tenacity; tender-hearted stumbling that leads you on the right path after all.
IT WAS SUCHA FUN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!! They handed out water during the show which i thought was really nice!
Venue, great as always. The staff were all awesome. Hippo Campus put on an amazing show. Gus Dapperton was fun too!
waited in the hot sun for 5 hours but it was so so worth it. this was my second time seeing hippo campus and it won’t be my last. a concert worth seeing even if you aren’t a fan!
The Anthem venue is terrific. We went to see the opener - Gus Dapperton - and were excited to see Hippo Campus. Gus's show was fantastic. We love live music. Unfortunately, Hippo Campus didn't engage with the audience. After the first 8 songs that sounded alike, we left a little early and somewhat baffled.
Both Gus and Hippo Campus were EXCELLENT. The sound, the songs the environment, awesome.
The DC show was phenomenal, however I was not made aware until two days prior to paying extra (via email because everyone checks those all the time, right?) that my ticket that was 3x the price of GA did not guarantee me an early entry spot. I paid extra for a soundcheck just to get put at the back of general admission after. Ive paid less to see Hippo Campus and had a better time, I'm hoping this isnt a taste of how their fans who pay more for benefits will be treated from here on. The soundcheck was fun, but I dont think 15 minutes of minimal interaction with a band plus a poster the venue made us throw away upon coming back in was worth 100 bucks. Again, great show though.
Loved the band. Loved the venue. Lots of bar options. Lots of food options.
Amazing energy from the get go. They put on a good show and the fans respond in a huge way. Not to be missed especially if you can see them in a cool venue like the Salt Shed. Sound was impeccable!
What a show! Hippo Campus at the Salt Shed Chicago was blow-me-away amazing! So much great energy, the boys all played so well and looked like they were having a blast doing it. Hands down best live show ever. The VIP experience was absolutely incredible! The whole venue was very clean, all staff was extremely nice and it was fun to learn about the history. I'll definitely be back for another event in the future
I've been listening to Hippo Campus since 2017, and this was the first concert of theirs I have been able to attend! This was by far my favorite concert to date; the vibes were amazing, their music was amazing, and the friends I made there were amazing, too. And they played Probably live for the first time for us!! No complaints at all! :)
Great show wouldn't change a thing! Awesome opener! Awesome lights! Awesome music! Awesome crowd! Awesome venue!
I saw them back in 2015 and let me just saw…WOW. They never disappoint. Anyone who’s writing a horrible review are the ones that don’t have good taste in music. I will for sure be seeing them again. And I’ll continue to do so as long as they’re around.
The energy in the building was amazing and their performance, the sound and the crowd were all fantastic!
It’s very hard to enjoy an artist when people are blocking your view. The biggest bummer is I was a platinum seat ticket holder… the experience was just not a good one. I left early because it was either I stay and not get to see anything or leave and find a way to still enjoy my night. You’re better off walking away from the front to view the show at a distance.
One of the most unengaged concerts I’ve ever been to, nobody was really into it, the set was boring, and people starting leaving 5 songs in.
AMAZING band and a really cool venue!! Their bag policy is a bit ridiculous but overall a great show
Gus Dapperton’s set was rushed, short, and lacking in energy from the artist. I didn’t feel the atmosphere like in previous shows. I know it’s tough when the majority of the crowd came to see someone else but I still feel he owes it to the fans that came there to see him. Other wise Hippo Campus rocked hard and were very enjoyable!!
Hippo Campus are amazing performers. They are incredible and the whole event was amazing
Forever my favorite band. This was my third time seeing them and I’m already looking forward to the next. Cannot miss seeing this guys if they’re in town.
Hippo Campus was incredible as always! The opener was also absolutely fantastic, my only complaint was the hour in between sets. It seemed as if they had nothing set up so we just hung out for an hour. Love the band and always enjoy their concerts! Just typically the change over between bands is much quicker.
