Brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the landmark American musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage.
Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and winner of four 2014 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on Broadway and promises to take the country by storm with what Time Magazine proclaims is “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever!”
Absolutely LOVED the story, the music, the costumes. Incredible show! My only regret was not sitting closer!
Too loud, so loud one could not understand lyrics. Louder does not mean better. Yes I get the rock concert venue....I've been to many, many concerts.......this musical was too loud. It is the first time I wish I could get a refund.
It's a great story with fabulous music to boot. The only criticism and reason behind my giving it four stars instead of five rests with the sound people who made the instruments so loud that it was very difficult at times to understand the words.
Had front row seats and sat next to others that knew the storyline too. Audience interaction !!
I've been a huge fan of the movie version of this beautiful tragic and hilarious story for many years. The live performance shook me and my family. Beautiful and emotional. The music was phenomenal.
The set design and musical production was absolutely fabulous. The songs couldn't have been more raw and deep. Definitely a great musical to see.
This was the most bazar theater event I have ever attended. It was clear that many in the audience were familiar with the story line and true fans, much along the lines of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The problem for me was that the story was hard to follow, I didn't understand the symbolism of the car on the stage, or the full meaning of the celebration at the end. This is a rock opera full of symbolism, but without a guide I couldn't connect the symbols with their meaning. I didn't know if Hedwig was intended to represent homosexuals, transsexuals, or all mankind. At the end of the 90 minutes my friends and I walked out asking ourselves, "What just happened?" It wasn't a lack of talent - the writing just didn't resonate with us.
I personally felt the play was absolutely terrible. It was boring, didn't like the music just bad overall. While our seats were awesome the rest of it sucked big time.
Amazing performance! Like no other musical I have ever seen
I hesitated to buy tix because I was not sure if I would enjoy a rock musical and I am glad I did. It was different from traditional musicals--stage effects were rather minimal, the show was dominated by the main character. Because he was such a great actor with various voices, I enjoyed all the songs and the emotions which were put into those songs very much. Much better than the movie for sure.
Explosive from the beginning! Funny, touching and inspiring.
we had great seats (important in San Diego- acoustics aren't great) but the actor playing hedwig was completely unintelligible (we relied on the deaf interpretation which also had trouble with understanding him). Nothing notable about the music other than it was so loud there was a lot of distortion (loud music doesn't bother me but distortion does). story line unclear. actress playing yitzak had a beautiful clear voice and could be clearly understood.
See above. If this didn't give migraine sufferers headaches, I don't know what would. I would have enjoyed it more if I were able to keep my eyes open and fingers out of my ears throughout the show. I understand that this is the way Rock concerts are (although I've never been to one), but I don't see the point. I rented the DVD to see the parts I missed. Some of the "normal" songs and the book were very sweet. Performers were excellent.
Great show with amazing music had no idea what to expect and loved it !!
Great show Great musical Nice production Would love to see it again Bravo!
Unlike the entertaining movie Hedwig fails to bring the same weirdness and interesting storyline to stage. The musical is basically Hedwig talking to audience about his history and story and then band performing about 8 songs. This format did not work for me. Humor was used throughout the "fourth wall" presentation, but it wasn't enough to sustain full attention. The show does start on a positive note with a crunching heavy metal song, but the sound engineer drowned out the vocals so much I could not hear the vocal that well. Anyway, music was good; all other was fair. If you are a fan of the movie, by all means go see this musical. If you are not you will be lost in translation.
If you're able to get tickets to this show, don't wait! It is well worth the money. So buy your tickets now!
Our seats were Orch J 1&3 dead center so our view was wonderful. The band played so loud that you could barely catch all the words of the song. The light show (which occurred twice) was too bright to look at the stage. Most people in my area looked to the left or right or down during those scenes. The play was funny. I did think it was a nice touch to change some lines to reference various parts of San Diego.
Didn't know what to expect, but enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would!
We go to two or three Broadway shows a year and usually enjoy them, but we just didn't enjoy Hedwig. We had amazing seats, about 5 rows back from the stage, which were the best seats we've ever had, but unfortunately it was for a show we didn't like. The strobe lights kept going off right in our eyes so much so that I had to shield my face. The fact that there were really only 2 characters and no set change made it a little dull. It was well sung and acted and the main actor had guts to do the role, but it just wasn't enjoyable for us. Luckily, I'd read the synopsis before going, or else I wouldn't have understood what it was all about. It was weird and loud and crude. (I knew the subject matter and I'm not a prude, it was just disappointing). I wouldn't recommend it and I wish I'd saved my money.
