About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

As good as it gets. Maybe even better.

by murraysmocha on 10/7/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

As full and rich an experience as anyone could imagine. Carney was otherworldly spectacular. But there were so many wonderful performances (Persephone, Euridyce (sp?), Page's voice as Hades, everyone in the dance ensemble, set design, direction, choreography, arrangements, musical talent (the trombonist was jawdroppingly wonderful among many other musical delights) so many things that will never be forgotten. If I had missed your production, I'd never forgive myself. It made our NYC experience magical and forever memorable. I hope you run forever. We (the audience) gave you as much as we had but you all deserve much more.

Staging was good. The piece itself is not good.

by C. A. on 10/7/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Of the seven shows I have seen this trip, Hadestown was the worst of the shows. Have no idea how it won the Tony for Best Musical. Not moving, not funny just clever staging. There are 2 people on the cast who can’t sing their notes. Seems like the Director is more interested in creating a theatrical look than telling a story or connecting with the audience.

    Brilliant

by Davis on 10/6/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This show is probably the best theater I’ve seen anywhere. Stunning performances. Run don’t walk to see it. Note: the mezzanine has very little leg room so wear comfy clothes and shoes.

    Magical. Sensational. Heart-breaking.

by Kyle H on 10/5/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The intimacy of the Walter Kerr Theatre accentuates the magical pull of this show. The set is brilliant and the band being ever present on stage feels enagaging. The cast has such strong chemistry while boasting unique voices and jaw dropping vocal talent with complimentary choreography. Surely a must-see.

    Masterful

A thoughtful, very well-done take on an ancient tale with superb music! Loved the profound themes that were well conveyed. The acting, the singing, the musicians, set, costumes, sound & lighting - all top notch. And thank goodness it was great, because this show is bloody expensive!

    Outstanding, Awe-Inspring, Memorable Musical Experience

by RetiredGuy on 9/30/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

From the moment the house lights dimmed to the moment when the actors left the stage after the curtain call, my eyes were riveted on the stage and my full attention was focused on everything that was happening on that stage. Even though I was familiar with the mythological stories represented by the main characters, I had not listened to any of the music from this musical prior to attending the performance. I was expecting to be blown away and I my expectations were exceeded. The 13 actors who played the 5 named characters + 3 Fates + 5 Worker's Chorus were all exceptionally talented. Andre' De Shields was magnificent - his moves, his facial expressions, and his vocal work were the lens for appreciating and understanding what the other characters were doing. The talents of the members in the 7 piece orchestra fully matched the talents of the actors. The set, the lighting, and the sound design were all several levels above my expectations for a musical production on Broadway. Do not miss an opportunity to see this production with this cast and this orchestra.

    Perfect night in Hadestown!

by N. M. on 9/29/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

WOW...what a show! One of the very best musicals I’ve ever seen, and so different. Like a diamond, each facet of this show shines: Fantastic set and great live band add depth to the atmosphere, while acting, singing and dancing were flawless. And the music...oh, that beautiful music! So glad we chose to go “...way down to Hadestown, way down under the ground.” Just perfection!

This is such a great musical, with terrific music, voices, energy, creativity, and soul. Hats off to Anais for her special view of an historical piece, with contemporary application.

    Amazing Play!

by J. M. on 9/29/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

We have seen a number of plays over the years, and this has leapt to the top of our list as the favorite. Despite some problems catching the lyrics early on, it kept us engaged throughout. Others obviously felt the same, given the huge standing ovation at the end. Great music and a great cast!

    Beautiful show

by Amy S on 9/29/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This is probably the most intimate show I've ever been to. Even in the mezzanine, you feel like you're right there on stage experiencing the show with the characters. The music is beautiful, the performances are incredible, and the story is engaging and leaves you feeling emotionally raw (in the best way possible). I loved every minute of it, and would go see it again in a heartbeat.

by B. F. on 9/29/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Sit close. No orchestra pit. Music and dance in modern form to a Greek tragedy performed in comprehensible fashion by a top notch cast. I am going to go again.

    New favourite musical!

by K. B. on 9/29/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The soundtrack and performance was amazing. Outstanding. Saw it because of Reeve, then saw it again a few days later before we left New York because we just couldn't get the songs of our heads.

    by S. L. on 9/28/19

I listened to the sound track before I went to see the show so many times, and it gave me the creeps when they sung the songs just like in the sound track! What a wonderful experience! Everything on the stage is world-class good!

    Breathtaking show

by Jon on 9/27/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I see a lot of musicals, and this is in the "top few that I would be reluctant to rank against each other." The cast fits together like a jigsaw, perfectly balancing each other and singing clearly and beautifully. The on-set band is very much part of the show. Get the best seats you can, and prepare for a treat.

    Too many awards for this

by L. M. on 9/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This is the show everyone is talking about. The show is ok but did not impacted me in any sense. I had lots of expectations maybe.
