Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre
While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.
About the Show
In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.
While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.
A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.
Great story. Excellent performances. Superb music.
Wonderful Fun show Good music and dancing Recommend everyone to see it if possible
This was a fantastic show!!! The entire cast is extremely talented and deserve the accolades that have been heaped on them. The music is fantastic. I was extremely impressed by the use of staging and lighting in this musical. My only negative comment is the theater itself. There is only one women's bathroom on the 2nd floor. The line at intermission was extremely long and lined up against the back wall of the theater on the first floor. They had staff to manage the crowd to keep the line moving but it was very nerve wracking trying to get through the bathroom line at intermission.
Lots of things I loved about this production... the band on the stage was fantastic, stage production and swinging pendant lights were enchanting, extremely strong opening number and interesting to have a narrator basically spell out the characters and the story line. To me, there were a few ‘slow’ points during the story and a few songs I feel were forgettable. But the actor’s voices were absolutely phenomenal and I would indeed recommend this show. I have seen all the usual suspects multiple times (Hamilton, Wicked, Lion King, Book of Mormon) and I am indeed glad I stepped out of my usual routine.
From the opening note I was hooked!! Loved the story, the acting and music—a truly magical ride!!
Hadestown was one of the best shows I have eve seen hands down! To say the cast and crew do an amazing job is an understatement....word cannot describe Hadestown. It moved my heart, soul, mind, and body...phenomenal, will definitely see again!
Everything you'd expect from Bway, and more. The music, the story, the creativity...everything!
Loved the music and the set. Read up on the story before the show and still was confused. It’s gotten such rave reviews but honestly I just didn’t love it. I always appreciate the talent (plenty of it!) and love Broadway - the story wasn’t for me and if you don’t read up on it beforehand you won’t know what’s going on. CH
The set, costumes, music, and acting looked excellent, BUT I could not hear the words in songs and dialogue, despite the fact I was wearing the theater-provided hearing assist device properly. AND the battery in the device failed before the end of the show. To compare, I saw Hamilton on Broadway in preview, sat in the last row of the balcony, wore the theater-provided hearing assist device, and heard almost every word. What a serious disappointment Hadestown was for me as a hearing impaired person.😢😠
Hadestown is an absolutely amazing show that I would recommend to anyone. I had a great view from the front centre of the mezzanine but honestly due to the size and layout of the theatre I doubt there’s a real bad view in the place
Great show! Incredible acting, singing, dancing.... Loved the ending. Not be missed!
This was an excellent show. I normally don't repeat shows as there are so many but this is one that I will see again. Already looking for tickets and plan to take my nieces. The cast was excellent and the music fantastic. A love story with a twisted ending. Love IT!!!
Great music. Great actors. Great voices. Great scenery. Great story and well told. Its a sad tale, an old song, that needs to be told again. A new broadway experience in the best possible sense.
The best set, the MOST talented cast. I want to go see it again!!!
Hadestown is the genre of musical theater in its highest form. The cast, staging, lighting, music, orchestrations are incredible. A must see.
Incredible production. Unbelievably talented cast. Outstanding set design and staging. Worth seeing again.
One of the best shows I have seen in a long time! Funny, Moving, Musically interesting, Excellent performances!
It’s phenomenal!!! Music is wonderful, I downloaded the soundtrack. The chemistry between the actors is amazing. It really is a must see!!
All I heard about this show is true. We were fortunate to have seen the entire original cast. The Tony Awards clip made us want to see it even more, then we purchased the soundtrack. This is a dark show but very exciting and beautifully acted and sung. The set was great, too. Go see it!
Lively music. No plot. The musicians were excellent, particularly the trombone player. The singing was adequate, the dancing minimal. The best thing was the counter-rotating circular descending-ascending stage. The seats were terribly cramped. No room for feet. How did this win the Tony over Tootsie, a cleverly composed, brilliantly performed musical?
